The hikers bar is a proper, old-fashioned pub. An enormous log-burning range welcomes you through the door when you eventually stagger in from the cold and wet outdoors. There are several real ales to choose from - I believe that the ODG, as its known, is the Regional Pub of the Year. The food is gorgeous, hot and reasonably priced...

Like other reviewers on TripAdvisor, I read some reviews with interest. It makes me laugh when some pompous upper crust twit from The City, or somewhere in the Home Counties visits the ODG. What you see is what you get. This is a hikers bar near the head of a Lakeland valley. It is usually full of tired and hungry...

Spent 2 nights at the ODG on the 9th Jan.....as usual brilliant stay ......comfortable rooms.....great food.....very friendly staff.....in a great part of the Lakes.....will be back. Can recommend this for a quiet (wifi free...phone signal free break)...especially this time of the year before the crowds appear at Easter....

Great location with spectacular views as you drive down the valley towards it. I was impressed with the eye for detail with bathroom soaps and lotion coming from the local Cumbrian area. There's a separate bar for residents but the Hikers bar has a nice atmosphere with some fine local ales. I stayed midweek to go on some walks in...

Very friendly and competent staff. We only stayed for lunch so can't comment on the rooms but the food was good sized portions, tasted good, decent sized menu and specials board had several more options too. Very good atmosphere in the place, bustling with lots of dog walkers, hikers etc.

After reading some reviews on Trip Advisor, of the same places at very similar times, I felt moved to write a little review of reviewers. I decided to look up my absolute favourite hotel, in the stunning Langdale Valley; The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, where I have stayed many times over the last twenty years. My own personal experiences of...

This is a lovely place and a review of the hikers bar ONLY. Crammed with atmosphere and just how it used to be in the '60s'. If you want plush, this isn't it but if you want somewhere rugged where you can walk in off the hills and demand sustenance, this is it and nowhere better! We visited twice and...

This is a review of the Hikers Bar only. My wife and I dropped by one afternoon recently and found the pub to be a bit of a dump (basic and dirty). The mens toilet was similar to a public toilet. We were hungry after a hike, but ended up having crisps and peanuts rather than chancing the food. The...

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights In September. We really loved this place because of it offers such a comfortable environment- by that I mean it literally has an extremely comfortable living room/lounge area with real fireplace and comfy couches- and the staff is warm and welcoming. We had dinner here both nights in the lounge and...

It never tires. It's the same year after year, offering the ultimate reward for a day on the trails. Great beer. Great service. Knowledgable staff interested in what you've done and where you've been. It's great that you can just walk in absolutely drenched to the skin and order a pint and no one blinks. The perfect pub!
