This is a very good hotel situated in a very interesting area and close to some lovely towns. It was a little larger than we anticipated, but made to feel very cosy with log fires, and various smaller bars which made it feel intimate. We ate in the restaurant one evening and the food was really very good indeed, and...

At check-in for our one night stay we were given an upgrade to the suite which we had to refuse due to a dislike of four poster beds. (Something to do with old horror films!). This confused the reception staff who clearly thought they were dealing with a mad couple. The man who had shown us to the suite pointedly...

£200/night full price for a 'very good' room. Bedroom was relatively small. No dressing gowns - at £200/night??? Very small bathroom, paint peeling on the skirting boards and door handles. A lot of road noise. The view of the common, which we had paid this extortionate price for was partially obscured by a flat roof. £170 for two nights' of...

This was our 5th visit to The Bear, in the past we've had varying experiences but we always return & so glad we did this time: i dont know whether there has been a change of management but i have to say that every member of staff we came across has a fabulous attitude: personable, friendly but not smarmy or...

We got our new car and went for a drive, we stopped off for dinner at "the bear" and what a little gem. We both had cod and it was fantastic. It was very busy and as a couple we only just got a table so I would definitely recommend booking in advance.

We stayed at the hotel on the "Relax and Recharge" package (Offered Jan/Feb) which gave us Dinner/Bed/Breakfast for 1 night. The reception staff were all very friendly and helpful when we arrived and showed us walking route across Rodborough Common to Stroud which made a very pleasant walk. The evening meal in the Library restaurant was very good. It was...

Visited the Bear today for the first time in many years and the whole experience was superb. Two couples and a dog for drinks and a lunchtime meal. The food was great and the service was exceptional. Not cheap for a pub lunch, but it was a lot more than just a normal pub lunch. We will return more often!

Visited this lovely venue early on a Sunday evening , four adults two dogs. Warm welcoming, friendly, staff. Warm and architecturally gorgeous building. Two log fires going. Dog treats offered immediately, always a good sign for dog lovers. This must be an amazing end to a brisk walk across the common ( we were in the car on this occasion)....

The food was excellent and great value. However I found the service very poor, we were rushed into what drinks we were having as well as what food we would like. When asking to see a desserts menu, we were forgotten about for around 10 minutes. Same happened when we asked for the bill. The steak night was great value...

We visited with our dog, Bertie. The room was ok, not brilliant but clean and functional, in the garden house. I have to say the staff here are excellent, especially don who looked after us on our first day. Whether you are in the bear bar, the common room or the restaurant you will be well looked after. On our...
