We stayed here for one night. The room was very cosy and spacious. We were warmly welcomed. The breakfast was also quite good. There is tea and coffee in the room. Just that the heating wasn't on, so it got a bit cold but with plenty of blankets we had no major issue. Besides we were also given an extra...

The service is terrible. The young people who were on shift to welcome us to the hotel and our room just did not seem to care. The staircase leading to our room smelt so rancid that I had to hold my nose. The room was average until I stepped into the bathroom to find hair and dust on the floor...

Friendly. Clean and cosy. They made us feel as if we were staying in our home or relatives. Great choice of small soaps for the bath. Great beds! Warm and english feeling. We loved the sight of the roofs outside our window. Though the music from the pub could be heard in the room, it stopped quite early in the...

Lovely pub. Lovely Staff And the only place that comes even anywhere near close to Harry ramsdens fish and chips. Added to my list every time I'm in the area. Much recommended just off the beaten track and well worth it. It looked like a lovely outdoor area but it was wet so didn't get to enjoy it.

Thank you for your kind review. We are indeed famous for our fish and chips (among other menu items!), and I am happy you enjoyed yours so much! Our fish is delivered fresh every morning from west-country markets and it is always gratifying when customers appreciate the quality of our product. Thanks again and hope to see you soon when...

We used to eat at The Golden Cross more regularly, and though the prices were a bit eye-watering, the food was always lovely. Not impressed. Too many items on wine list not on, chosen starter unavailable, main course uninspired. The smallish GX burger was encased in an enormous and very dry bread mountain, apart from some shreds of lettuce and...

Thank you for your review. To address your points individually: "Too many items on wine list not on" - we do not have a wine list per se, so how you arrived at this conclusion is beyond me. However, we do carry a range of house-recommended wines (5 reds, four whites, two rose and a choice of prossecco) and all...

Thank you the staff and management in making our evening so memorable. We celebrated our daughters birthday, with a great bottle of Mercer Champagne wine and beer. I had the best steak I have eating in the last 10 years, with a pepper sauce. It WAS JUST GREAT. The rest of the party enjoyed Fish AND CHIPS. PLEASE CONTINUE WITH...

Visited twice this week and both times without a booking. The team found us a table and we were treated brilliantly. The staff were courteous and friendly and our food was wonderful on both occasions. The ham and eggs was lovely as was the sausage and mash. Well done guys we will be back

Visited this pub for Sunday Lunch. Greeted with apology that because of numbers booked in for session, we would be cramped onto a small table in a thoroughfare! Food distinctly average. There is an attempt to be gourmet but they fail. Starters; nearly £8 for a small amount of pate with two pieces of crusts-cut-off-toast. Reasonable quantity of meet for...

Just a short stroll from the town's historic market place, hidden up a picturesque mediaeval backstreet, you'll find The Golden Cross Inn.This early-18th Century coaching inn offers a warm welcome to all, from those seeking a thirst quenching pint of real ale to discerning diners looking for gourmet British cuisine, and of course to weary travellers looking for a bed for the night. While the building itself dates from the mid-17th Century, landlord Mark Lindesay and his dedicated team have recently transformed the pub into a welcoming hostelry offering contemporary standards of service, great food, good company and comfortable, well-equipped bedrooms, suites and apartments. The Golden Cross Inn offers the perfect combination of contemporary sophistication and traditional charm with its exposed beams, classic pub ambiance in its snug bar, combined with a light, airy dining area, all tended by friendly and attentive staff. ... more   less

“Family room was a bit odd, there are three single beds but it would really have made more sense for the larger room to have a double bed in it, there's certainly space. Windows on this room are right over the street (and pub entrance), so don't try for an early night without earplugs.”
