I loved Alfriston YHA so much. I was just 17 at the time and travelled alone. (this was last summer). I was walking the South Downs Way solo and this was the first place I stayed. I was in a dorm with many other lovely women. I also met a dutch family who were so friendly. We are lifelong friends...

This hostel is in a great location on the South Downs trail and in a beautiful 16th century flinthouse and in a charming village that has a lot of offer. Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, the YHA management has decided to close it. This type of hostel is exactly the reason that my wife and I, and many other people...

This hostel is in a superb location which cannot be matched, above the Cuckmere Valley. There is a pathway running down the side that take you straight to the river and river walks, either to the village or to the sea via Exceat. Lovely, rural idyll. It is an old building that was given (yes, given) to the movement. Now...

Great location and nice characterful building. However, the interior is in a poor state. I am happy in simple hostels with basic facilities and even old fittings/furniture, but this hostel really needed some TLC - clean away the cobwebs, repaint the peeling walls, treat the rot and mould. The warden (friendly and helpful) informed us that our dorm would be...

Being an avid member of YHA, and staying at most in the UK and abroad, this has to be the worst I've ever stayed at! The building is beautiful, and location great, but it seems this has slipped of the radar! Came here for one night, having read the reviews, but even that didn't come close! It's a shame somewhere...

Just back from a fun weekend at Alfriston Youth Hostel. We were with a large-ish group of kids and adults, and we all had a wonderful time. It's not a 5-star hotel, so if you're expecting spotless carpets and polished doorknobs then you'll be disappointed, but it's a classic youth hostel and my son and I both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves....

We stayed at Alfriston in October, an amazing historic building with lots of character. It's on the edge of the charming village of Alfriston, and a very convenient stop for walking in the South Downs. You don't usually get to stay in a place like this unless you pay very high B & B prices. With such an excellent location...

ok, firstly It's a hostel not a 5 star hotel. Granted not all hostels are created equal and Alfriston is shabby in places and could certainly do with a revamp. That said, it has table football, a big garden, plenty of books and places to read them, a great kitchen, friendly staff, free Wifi for members, clean linen, reasonable beds...

This hostel oozes character and captures the spirit of the yha.Educating young people about the outdoors and creating precious family memories. It was clean and everything was fully functional. The alternative would be b&bs at 5 times the price, but they are threatening to close this hostel on September.Shame on you yha management!

Beautiful location, lovely building, comfy communal rooms, well equipped and very clean members kitchen. Loos and showers were clean and acceptable. Areas to work on: beds/matresses have served their time and should be retired. Sleeping in a hostel dorm is always a bit of a challenge - the ropey beds do not assist. Staff seem a bit unhappy / cross...
