Was amazed on arrival to the hotel and during our stay. The service was outstanding and the whole thing was perfect as if was a gift for my mum for her 50th birthday. This ended when a couple of days after I was emailed a bill for £42 for items taken from the mini bar. Neither of us had anything at all from the mini bar during our entire stay and ate incredibly honest people. After emails and calls with the hotel the bill was removed however at no point did the hotel admit any errors and still seemed to believe that we took the items. Please if you stay here ensure you take a photo of what is in the mini bar to avoid this happening to you. A disgraceful end to a fantastic stay by being falsely accused of virtually stealing.
Arrived in to the car park entrance . Really nice doorman/porter who hefted our bag explaining that the lift was out of order and were waiting and had been waiting for parts for some time. Not a problem as we were delivered to reception. The room was a de/luxe and as requested was at the rear of the hotel and quiet. Nice to find a chocolate cake delivered with compliments for my wife’s birthday. The room was a good size clean and tidy. The bed super king size if not more. Would have favoured a lighter duvet but maybe one could have been provided but we didn’t bother only staying two nights. The bathroom was a real throw back with vintage white goods. Nothing wrong they all worked but being used to more modern bathrooms a bit of a surprise. I would only criticise the half Bath which for us oldies was just a bit awkward to step in for a shower. Can’t comment on the food other than the continental breakfast. We found that fine for us but observing people tucking in to the full English seemed to be good. The intention had been to eat in the Brassiere but disappointingly there was nothing on the menu that appealed for the birthday treat. Never mind loads of really good restaurants close by. The position is really good so no problems there. All in all a good stay were the staff probably made all the difference, in a positive way..…
We arrived on the night of our wedding for a 3 night stay in a Deluxe Suite. It was noted in the booking but was not mentioned at check-in. Sat in a wedding dress and suit, the receptionist asked were we celebrating anything to which we said that we had just married. The response from the receptionist was ‘ah that’s nice’. We were not expecting champagne and flowers but there was not one thing said or done from the hotel to congratulate us. Given the stay was in a suite and not a standard room it was not a cheap and cheerful getaway! The suite was nice and spacious but the removal of all non-essential items due to covid is wearing a little thin now. The lack of what is considered as standard in a luxury hotel (speaker, coffee machine, bathroom items) is not provided. We had afternoon tea where we were again asked if celebrating anything - again nothing but I noted the party had a small chocolate with gold writing saying Happy Birthday. As a comparison a local gastro pub gave my mum a small birthday desert for celebrating her birthday the other week without us even asking nor did they charge us. We did enjoy our stay but not due to anything the hotel did..…
My husband and I dropped in to the Grosvenor for cocktail on Friday evening and i had forgotten my. Reading glasses a charming young woman called Ceinwen can to my rescue and helped me find the perfect cocktail. I have meet Ceinwen once before when e stayed at the Grosvenor in March. She is a very dedicated young lady and as I witnessed on Friday evening has a natural ability to put the customer at ease and at only the tender age of 22 years old I predict she has a bright and successful career in the hospitality industry , such staff are a rare finds
We enjoyed a 2 night stay here right in the heart of the old part of Chester. Nice room, nice dinner in the brassiere and equally nice breakfast. The stand out feature is the staff who are all welcoming and helpful. Special mentions to the friendly doormen!
We had booked a two night stay on the summer deal, excellent value for money……..on checking in we were informed that we had been given a complimentary room upgrade……..a lovely touch!! We were shown to our room by the young man who checked us in, something I heard other guests being offered and we thought it was a lovely idea. Our upgraded room was the Mayfair Suite which had its own lounge, a bedroom with a four poster bed (not sure how a short person would get in and out of the bed as it was quite high off the ground) a separate toilet and a bathroom with a bath, walk in shower and his and hers basin and large, heavy, fluffy white bath towels with Elemis products. The staff make this hotel memorable, any issues we had were dealt with immediately and in a very positive and professional manner. Every member of staff we had contact with were extremely friendly, helpful and professional. It was great to speak with Niki Deponeo, Guest Relations Manager when we were checking out and share our feedback to her personally before we left. We loved the location of the hotel, you are within easy walking distance of so many interesting places……..the cathedral, the river and of course the shops!! Parking wasn’t an issue as we knew exactly where the Grosvenor shopping centre car park is, there is a pull in where you can drop off your luggage before finding a parking space and when we departed a very helpful porter carried our luggage to our car which my husband had driven in to the hotel pull in……the only thing guests need to remember is to pay for parking at the machines found on level 1 and 2 as the car park uses number plate recognition. When we next visit Chester we will certainly look at booking The Chester Grosvenor again, thank you for a lovely stay.…
Just back from a two night stay here at the Grosvenor, our second time this year. The city was certainly busier than it was in March, but the Grosvenor still didn’t seem too full of guests. We upgraded to a suite this time, a first for us, and it was tremendous. In our opinion there is nothing wrong with the standard rooms here despite some recent reviews, but the suite is something else. A really nicely laid out lounge area with comfy sofas, a king size bed raised slightly on its own little mezzanine and a gentle stroll down to the bathroom where the choice is bath or shower ?. The entire staff were as usual polite and attentive from check in to check out from porters to reception staff. Breakfast was great and again the staff in the Brasserie helpful and polite. There are other hotels in Chester city centre (we have stayed in others) that could possibly be cheaper but the Grosvenor has that something else for us. Maybe it is down to that human touch that seems sadly a thing of the past in many areas these days.…
This was my second visit to the Chester Grosvenor and I can say they do not disappoint. From check-in at a desk as opposed to a counter and being shown to the room by the person checking you in. It’s all top notch. The rooms are a generous size with beautiful decor (which varies per room) Bathrooms are also large. Breakfast delivered to our room was magnificent. Be careful of the bed though. They are so comfortable you may not want to leave!
This is a rather strange old hotel and I have thought long and hard about writing this review. First of all, the positives.....the staff. We only spent a night here on business but each and every member of staff we met were professional, kind and helpful. However, how the Grosvenor still meets the requirements to be listed as a 5 star hotel is completely beyond us. It clearly was once a long time ago, when it had a reputation as one of the finest hotels outside London but everything here now feels a little scuffy and faded glory. My missus and I are now retired and been very fortunate enough to have stayed in some very fine 5 star hotels here in London, in Europe and the U.S.A. and we know what hoops these places have to jump through to attain such status. First of all.....and through no fault of the Grosvenor because alot of Chester is now car free, it is a complte faff to get to the place in a car. You have to find an adjoining multi storey car park that gets very busy, find a parking space and then lug your bags to special entrance on Level 2. There is a notice to say that you could ring for help but that would seem to us to be a bit awkward in the middle of alot of car movement up and down the parking ramps. Our room was an " executive room " on the third floor....one of the cheapest on offer. It was adequate Our biggest gripes were that you could not open the windows.....presumably because of the noise levels out side.....Chester has many many buskers ! So, although the room supposedly had airconditioning, it wasnt very effective and the room got unbearably hot through the night. Our second gripe was the bathroom. It was small and tatty. Mould on the grouting and a pathetic shower over the bath. The saving grace in the morning was a nice cooked breakfast served in the dining room by friendly charming staff. So, in conclusion, this is rather a sad place I think. It clearly was the place to go to and be seen in when the gentry from London came to Chester for the races many years ago. However, it clearly needs a lot of investment to refurbish the rooms and bathrooms etc. That is a huge amount of money required to do that we know. Also, just to put things into perspective , the rates here aren't exorbitant. We paid just over £200 for the night excluding breakfast, so not far more than Hilton / Holiday Inn rates. We are sad to say this but the Chester Grosvenor is at best a decent 4 star hotel and no amount of older gentlemen staff wearing morning coats and top hats at the front entrancecan disguise that.…
This was our second stay at the Chester Grosvenor within the last 5 years and the first since the pandemic. As always the staff is terrific - very attentive and extremely friendly. Especially the complimentary chocolate cake in our room was a very nice touch and just shows how everyone is trying their best to make it a joyful experience. However, even though we stayed in a very expensive suite (The Deva Suite) several areas showed signs of ‚decay‘ (e.g. the tabs in the bathroom were constantly running and were loose as well as the toilet seat. Several areas were patched up and it wasn’t as clean as I would have expected for the standard of the hotel. We will definitely come back but probably will just stay in a ‚normal‘ room and not upgrade to such a big (master suite) - the junior suite we stayed in the last time was much nicer and felt newer that this one. A bit of a shame seeing as the staff was - as mentioned before - absolutely fabulous.…
