Our stay was wonderful. The staff the hotel the restaurant were all wonderful. We had an issue with food as I am gluten intolerant but this was resolved quickly by Amy, Jess our server was lovely and she has only been with the hotel a few weeks, what an asset. Jarone the manager made every effort to make our stay perfect. It was, what a great guy. We will be back soon

We sincerely apologise that your recent visit was not how you expected, and we can assure you that we value your feedback as this can only benefit us to improve upon the services that we offer. In regard to you waiting for your key for half an hour. We apologise for the misunderstanding if our reception didn't make it clear about the check in times. Our check in time is at 3pm and any time before that is subject to the availability of the room status. As you had arrived before check in time, we worked really hard to make you feel comfortable while we were waiting for our housekeeping team to get back to with the status of the key. We sincerely apologised and you took on our offer in sitting in our garden with a drink while you waited for the key. In regard to the room, I would like to assure you that we have forwarded this information to the relevant department manager. We would also like to assure you that your opinion is invaluable, and this information will be used as a basis for training and development. You are a valued guest so please do not hesitate to contact us directly the next time you book with us as we would truly appreciate a chance to exceed your expectations. Kind regards

Pros: A really lovely quirky building, great decor. Room 16 is a gorgeous duplex space, huge bed and the biggest roll top bath I've ever seen on the mezzanine level. Bar and restaurant areas looked cosy and comfortable, the covered secret garden area really well thought out and I can imagine a nice spot in the summer. Cons: my main problem was the customer service... or more like lack of customer service! We arrived with bags and cases. Check in was quick, but no warm welcome, no offer to show us to our room or help with our bags. We were given a key and vague instructions to cross the secret garden and go through the door at the end. Which we did, but then there were no signs to say where our room might be in the building. Turns out it was on the 2nd floor, but a small sign on each floor landing would have been helpful, or even better if someone had actually shown us and helped carry our luggage up 4 flights of stairs! Once in the room, it was spotlessly clean and we'll equipped so no complaints, although there was the occasional whiff of drains in the toilet/shower room. Slightly bizarre lack of privacy for the loo so not a room for those who aren't happy to use the bathroom in eye/earshot of their partner! Zero instructions on how to use the heating controls, or the coffee machine, no menus in the room. Breakfast.... extremely disappointing. We'd booked for 9.30am. Arrived to find a pretty poor "continental " section. One croissant remained and a few Danish pastries. A bowl of shrink wrapped individual cheeses. A plate with chunks of dried up pomegranate and passion fruit halves which i can only presume were unused in the bar the previous evening! I took the croissant, but the minute I went to tear a chunk off realised it was rock hard, totally inedible. I told the waitress I couldn't eat it as it was stale, she just said "oh", and took it away. No apology, no "let me get you a fresh one", nothing. So we ordered a full English, which was OK, but pretty mediocre and basic quality. The coffee was weird, like watered down instant granules. Check out... the girl took our key. And that was it. No "did you enjoy your stay", or any other interaction. In summary, this hotel has huge potential as its been really beautifully designed. They just need to employ some grown ups (all the front of house staff looked like kids/students), who know what great customer service looks like and have a passion for making people feel welcomed and valued customers. Having spent £190 for one night, we left feeling disappointed. We've genuinely had better experiences at a £40 a night premier inn. Owners have a real gem in the estate, but it was pretty deserted for a weekend, and after talking to the locals it's clear the reputation for non existent customer service is well known in Chester. I fear this place will soon be gone if they don't do something radical to change their people.

Location Location is brilliant, a short walk into the centre. There is no car parking at the hotel but a multi-storey car park is just round the corner which is £20/day but the hotel gives you a discount card which drops that to £10/day. Plenty of shops and restaurants within a short walk. The river and ancient walls were just a short stroll downhill with easy access for the boat trips. Check in Check in was online and communication from the hotel prior to check in was good. On arrival the rooms aren’t ready until 3pm. We arrived at 1pm so they stored our luggage for us and we strolled into the city to get some lunch. Collection of keys was very quick with just a signature. Room We were in a cottage room at the back of the hotel through the Secret Garden restaurant. Room was nice and very clean but bed was a little smaller than we expected. Bathroom was nice but the lever to open the basin plug was missing so we just had to open it by hand (I meant to report it but never got round to it). The bathroom walls are glass with a frosted section in the middle which is a bit disconcerting and the bathroom door swings round and becomes the shower cubicle door. Towels were lovely and soft and perfectly white and the toiletries were good quality. Food We only had breakfast at the hotel but that was really good. Lots of choice for a hot breakfast, along with fruit, cereals, toast, pastries, juices etc. We had the full English which was piping hot. Hotel The hotel is very quirky with upturned zinc buckets for lights, totally mismatched crockery, large murals of birds and plants on the walls, whacky wallpaper – it was great! It’s not really suitable for disabled guests as the entrance is up a flight of stairs. Overall A great hotel in a great location. Would I return again?? Absolutely!!

Disappointing stay in Lady Mary’s Loft. I’m not one to leave negative reviews normally but felt the need to in this case to inform anyone thinking about staying of our experience. We stayed Saturday and Sunday night as we were completing Chester Marathon, and then had a flight to catch from Liverpool airport early the Monday morning which involved us leaving the hotel at 3am. We specifically booked Lady Mary’s loft due to the double bath which we thought would be relaxing post marathon. It is quite obviously the main selling point of this room so you would assume you could run and use both baths at once. It was disappointing to find that it was impossible to fill both baths at once. The water pressure was terrible and after 30-45 minutes we had to give up as both baths were only 1/3 full and the hot (warmish) water had ran out and was running cold. The shower was also running cold. This was about 4pm on Saturday. Post marathon (Sunday ~7pm) we did manage to run and fill one bath but even then it took about 40 minutes and was warmish at best. There were a couple of other minor annoyances that I wouldn’t even normally mention or think about (tea bags and shower gel weren’t restocked - really annoying when you are sweaty post marathon and struggling to move so don’t feel up to doing all the stairs unnecessarily to tell reception), however the main issue was that the we asked the hotel reception to book us a taxi to the airport for 3am for our flight. They assured us this would be booked by the night-porter when he came on shift and wrote it on a piece of paper and left it on the desk. 3am comes, we come downstairs and ask the night porter who knows nothing about the taxi. This is simply unacceptable. He then tried to phone the taxi company they apparently partner with but had no answer (likely due to it being 3am Monday morning). We were extremely lucky there was one Uber driver in the area who was able to accept our ride and pick us up by 3.45 so we didn’t miss our flight. The Uber driver said we were very lucky as taxis in Chester are really hard to get and he just happened to have dropped someone off and was heading home to Liverpool when we requested on Uber. The actual hotel room would have been nice if the bath / hot water situation was fixed and the location is great, but the hotel is massively let down by the service and it’s staff. The reception staff seemed disinterested in general and weren’t even apologetic about the taxi situation. Feels like a 3* hotel with 1* service. The hotel feels more like a bar / restaurant with a few rooms just FYI if you are thinking about booking. For a similar price I would book the Grosvenor next time…

Let me start by saying we had our first date here, I proposed here, we got married here .. it has special meaning and was always superb. We returned for my wife’s birthday and it was so different, the restaurant had 2 tables with diners. We were sat ar a table with food debris under it, the restaurant floor has rust marks all over it from the tables and the roof was leaking. The service was ok and the food was average. I really don’t know what has happened but this may be our last visit to what was once an amazing place.

Definitely odd, bar dated and dusty, staff ok but not overly friendly, room very modern and quirky, bathroom just glass so you can watch your partner in the shower and on the toilet if you so wish , floor damaged by the shower as constant water sitting on it I suspect , breakfast booked for 8 but no-one there to greet you. Breakfast room cold as was the breakfast and coffee, great location and carpark close , would stay again but would request a deferent room ( ours was 7).
