Backwell House I have had time during lockdown to catch up with reviews-I stayed here on a Saturday night in October 2020. Greeting and Check-In When we took a taxi to Backwell House , we were dropped off right outside the doors. The lovely Lady on reception quickly made her way over and relieved us of our baggage. As I entered through the doors, the surroundings were beautiful and elegant. The process for checking in was quick and efficient, friendly, and hassle-free. She then showed us where the main guest areas such as the restaurant, bar & lounge were before escorting us to our room via the lovely sweeping staircase! Shortly after we got to the room, our cases arrived and were quickly set up by a member of staff. The whole process ran very smoothly from arrival to getting to our beautiful room. Hotel Room TOOGOOD The room was truly stunning. The room was very spacious, and we were instantly drawn to the huge window, which is actually double doors onto a balcony! The balcony looks over a magnificent rose garden. This is in the bathroom, with a freestanding bath . I was looking forward to a bath in front of this lovely window looking out over the rose garden! The bathroom is a decent size, and complementing the freestanding bath in the middle of the room is a huge walk-in shower. There was plenty of room for all my toiletries, hair products, and makeup. There were also plenty of complimentary toiletries that were lovely and also of great quality. There was a lovely note from the management, along with flavoured teas and bottled water. The TV was nice and big with a range of digital channels to choose from. Everything looked lovely and the room had a quirky and unusual chandelier. The bedding was beautiful quality, and the bed comfortable as I had hoped, and it was huge. Overall, we were really happy with the room, and in particular the bath and the view! I noted a door in the corner of the room, and later asked about it, and it is linked to the next room. I was told both rooms can be booked together, and the door opened. I am keeping this in mind for a future visit with more friends! Afternoon Tea We took afternoon tea at Backwell House on the very first day of arrival, it was a lovely experience. The restaurant, conservatory and a grey room in the middle of both was where the afternoon tea is served and is a lovely and relaxing space .I noted people also enjoying afternoon tea in the garden. We were placed in the restaurant. It is a stylish yet informal area where you can dress in smart casual clothing, and the chairs are comfortable. Our afternoon tea was at 3pm, and the whole room looked elegant and autumnal with all the beautiful flowers on tables and the giant stone fireplace. After being seated, we were quickly attended to by a lovely polite waitress, who told us she wanted to make this the best afternoon tea experience for us. She first brought over our drinks and then a tasty savoury dish for each of us. After this came the sandwiches and cakes along with the tea we ordered. Although it was sumptuous, we were unable to manage all of our afternoon tea, and there was a danger of the cakes going to waste. Fortunately, the waitress realised we had given up and arranged for the cakes to be put in the fridge for us. She told us to simply call down whenever we wanted them to be brought up to the room. Hotel Bar The bar at Backwell House is very elegant and stylish, with a rich mysterious dark vibe. It had a nice atmosphere and was much larger than I had expected. There was many fabulous bottle on display, which made me excited to see the drinks menu, especially the cocktail menu. We went for Cocktails early evening, we came down from the room at around 6 pm. We were led to a cosy settee area that was comfortable and suitably atmospheric- this was the lounge. The music was just right, and we could chat with our friends. The waitress came over very quickly to take our drinks order and was a jovial yet professional young lady. I am very particular about my Cocktails and how they should be prepared and served. I chose Espresso Martini, and my friend choose a gin and tonic from the very large gin choice. The cocktails here are the usual prices you expect, and there are some exciting options to choose from. Our cocktails were nice and refreshing and were brought over promptly. Drinks were well prepared and presented. In addition to our cocktails, we also ordered a small dish each from a lounge menu. I ordered olives, and my friend squid, and they were delicious! I think the lounge menu is available for a lot of the day. The experience was a pleasant and relaxed one – there is no dress code, so there were plenty of people in jeans although we dressed up for the occasion. Hotel Restaurant The staff are welcoming, friendly and make you feel at ease with the current restrictions. The food was very reasonably priced, and the portions were perfect, and packed full of amazing flavours! I had visited recently on two other times, just for lunch, so I had tested out a lot of the menu. I could not fault any of it. The lamb was tender and nicely cooked, and the fish was fresh and light. The deserts were incredible! I could not speak more highly of it and cannot wait to visit when Backwell House when it reopens. I am very lucky as I do not live too far away, so I am always looking to get lunch & dinner bookings here! I noted good vegetarian options, and I asked if there were vegan options, as I was planning to bring a vegan friend. There is a separate vegan menu. Room Service The service is good – when we placed an order, a lovely and very professional gentleman brought it up and got the table all set up for us in the room. The items we ordered arrived in good time, and the sandwiches were delicious. Staff and Service All staff were beyond helpful, professional and knowledgeable. Extremely friendly members of staff. Grounds Beautiful grounds, with some excellent walks close by too-reception provided us with a selection of walks. An incredible Rose garden at the back of the hotel. Overall Impression Arriving at this hotel was a grand experience and walking through the entrance into such an elegant space was amazing. This hotel has a very special ambiance and atmosphere. I felt as though I was a welcome guest in a very special home. It is very romantic here - I had a perfect stay.

We only live 5 miles from Backwell House but we like to stay overnight occasionally for a treat. The food is always very good, the bar is cosy and well stocked and the staff are lovely. The rooms are excellent (Hobbs is our favourite) as is breakfast. A great venue employing local people and setting the standard locally for a boutique country house hotel.
