Black Sands was recommended to me buy the owner of Elevation Restaurant on Scenic Road in Waitakere. I booked for two nights because I needed a rest from all my other travels in NZ. I wanted to do nothing. Julia and Bobby are wonderfully kind and full of the best information about where to go for food and walks. They...

Despite having travelled extensively throughout the world I have never paid for a lodge in my very own Auckland nor have I ever spent $270 on a single nights accomodation. Lo....there was no laundry service...the shower was stone cold...no complimentary milk for coffee ie the quintessential "Jaffa scam".

Spent 3 nights here and it was amazing. The beach is gorgeous black sand a very short walk from your room. There are a ton of nature walks you can enjoy, including a trail that leads to a beautiful waterfall. If you're looking for a place that has great scenic walks, this is it. The one thing I would mention...

Private and close to beach. Good off road parking and the hosts are really nice. Missed the last star because a few minors - the bathroom in the Kauri unit is downstairs (bit of a challenge if you have mobility issues), a cracked toilet (water integrity still ok but unnerving...), bedroom window opening onto the neighbours deck and a stain...

My husband and i stayed in the kauri cottage for two nights after a long flight to nz. This was the perfect place to chill and recharge our batteries. The cottage was beautiful and our hosts extended a typically warm kiwi welcome. We borrowed body boards to visit the beach (few minute walk away) and had a fab time there....

We arrived in Auckland for impromptu trip. Rented a car and just drove towards Piha. Googlwd Black Sand Lodge and Linda, the owner, told us she has a vacancy so we headed that way. The journey is pleasant and very scenic. Arrived about 40 minutes later, and Linda immediately came out to greet us. She is a very nice lady....

I would really recommend anyone to stay with Julia and Bobby at Black Sands. Excellent location and very understanding when our plans unexpectedly changed. Will stay again next time I'm in Piha. Thank you!

We travelled up to piha from down south for a wedding and had not booked accommodation. Julia and Bobby were all too welcoming for us when we found them. Even when we had to cancel our second night staying there, they were so nice and understanding. Could not recommend a better place to stay when travelling to Piha!!

Highly recommended lodge for all aspects of a stay in Piha. 2 minute walk from the iconic Piha beach and set in the magical surroundings and gardens, this lodge is the perfect place to stay while enjoying the outstanding natural beauty of the area. The lodge is owned and run by the kindest and most welcoming hosts Bobbie and Julia....

“The Tui suite was the real thing.....first in the morning and just before sunset....a couple of Tui birds came by to sing for me...exotic. The rainwater is collected for tap drinking and showers, conserve it but enjoy it. I took a bottle home with me because it was so delicious. The WiFi connection is excellent... The windows are so "squeaky clean" it felt like I was outside,......but keep em closed at night..there was one mosquito...use the screened window and you'll sleep in paradise found”
