After many km of walking this was our halfway route lunch stop-off. We got there just before 2pm and were told that the Chef had a meeting from 2 pm until 3pm and therefore no food orders could continue to be taken. The staff behind the bar were apologetic - but can't advertise you are serving food until a specific time and then randomly stop. It's not goid for business .
Great location and the perfect place to stay for a few days. Food was excellent and although they were short-staffed the staff that were there were attentive and couldn’t have done any more for us. Highly recommend
Fabulous stay in a stunning location with friendly hardworking staff. I cannot fault our time at this hotel. Breakfast was lovely our room was great and the views from the windows are amazing. We walked straight from the hotel to Dovedale , Ilam and Thorpe Cloud. We had a wonderful and relaxing time at The Izaak Walton Hotel and will be booking a return visit soon. A big thank you to all the staff for your hardwork and warm welcome. A particular mention goes to the manager Imogen and the assistant manager Wayne for helping us with local tourist information and excellent customer service! Let's support our hospitality industry right now and give them the praise and encouragement they deserve.
Superb surroundings, what a gem of a hotel, staff were attentive and friendly, knowledgeable about local walks etc. great getaway from it all location. Breakfast was delicious too. Absolutely will be returning for longer stay next time. No whinging complaints from us. Much prefer the independent establishments.
Positives first. This hotel is in a beautiful location and was immaculately clean. There was only one main staff member on (I’ll refer to her as “I”) and she was so hard working and trying her best. Finally, breakfast was delicious. Now the negatives: We booked a “superior room with a view”. The first room was tiny and had a view of the car park. The second and third rooms were bigger but still small and did not fit the description of what we had booked with their facilities or location. Room four was bigger and had a view so we accepted it. As we were unpacking the faithful “I” called to say she’d found a room that fit the description and moved us there. The only thing that didn’t fit the description was the stains on the wall (picture!). “I” said she didn’t know what each room was like, hence whilst it took so long to find the room we had booked. Blame was placed on the booking agents not sending through the type of room booked but given it took four more attempts to find a superior room once our requirements were confirmed, it’s not likely anything would change if the details were sent through in advance. Prior to the stay we received a message to say the restaurant was closed during our stay. This would have been ok if it didn’t turn out the surrounding area seemed to be struggling too and a lot of local places were closed and there were limited places to go (especially those to catered for us vegetarians). We decided on the second night to have a few drinks from the bar and eat the sandwiches we had managed to get hold of for our dinner. Then we saw the sign saying that the bar was shutting at seven that evening. “I” appeared to be the only member of staff who was working throughout our stay. Day one, no one else was present. Day two, two other women, one who labelled herself the “assistant manager” sat at the desk all day whilst “I” did everything, which included the assistant manager saying, when we asked for a drink “”I” is busy but when she comes back I’ll tell her you want a drink”. Not good service or management! The final day we had breakfast and poor “I” was seating everyone and clearly didn’t have time to explain how breakfast worked which made it a bit awkward whilst we sat there unsure whether to help herself or not (we did not have breakfast the first morning due to our plans). The room we had in the end was nice with a few but in a tired state. As mentioned, stains on the wall and damage to the wardrobe door. The tv was temperamental and the spa Bath was also not fully functioning. Note that despite the booking agent we used stating we would get a spa Bath, apparently only a few rooms have them and they don’t all work! The pandemic and clearly hit this place and sadly it really is struggling to recover. We won’t be visiting again.…
