Superb location. We stayed in a private room for 4 with ensuite. It was clean and at the expected standard for a YHA hostel. The staff were friendly and approachable. We slept well and enjoyed the breakfast.
Stayed for two nights in 6 bed room, family of 5. Did not book ensuite, but toilet and shower were allocated, very clean. Mainly families stating, was quiet at night. We self catered, there was enough space in fridges, busy in evening, but able to cook basic meal- 2 ovens and 3 4 ring hobs in kitchen, 2 sinks, enoig crockery. Stunning location, we did 3 different walks in different directions starting at the hostel, great view across to Thorpe Cloud from hostel, a short walk away. Enjoyed the table tennis table and pool table in the hostel.
Excellent YHA, stayed in an en suite room and was self catering. Cannot be beaten on price or location. They weren't doing evening meals when we stayed, just breakfast so check in advance. The self catering kitchen as a result was very busy in the evening but worked well.
Ilam hall was above our expectations. The staff were friendly and helpful. The facilities were good with a good kitchen for self catering. The location was fantastic. There are lots of beautiful walks nearby This was a perfect family break
Amazing place I have ever visited. Completely surrounded by peaceful quiet countryside. Roaming sheep. Lush green grass. Views stunning. Lots of public walks and paths posted. We stayed only one night but wished stayed longer. No WiFi or mobile reception. Staff very helpful. Very clean well kept. Had veggie breakfast filled me up.
This was our second time staying at this youth hostel. The building is huge, and has lovely grounds and places to go for walks. Rooms are a bit hit and miss. You expect things to be basic in a youth hostel, but this time our en-suite shower room didn't have any ventilation, so the walls and floor were constantly wet. The radiator in the bedroom didn't work, and the window only opened a crack, so the room was cold and had damp walls. Breakfast was very good, but pretty expensive for 6 of us with the post-Covid price hike. Sofas in the lounges were in a dreadful state, and need to be replaced. Same for the table tennis bats and pool table cues. Overall, Ilam Hall is in a beautiful location, but was a bit too run down for our liking.
Stored with mini me for one night during our mid week roam of England. We’ve stopped in Ilam before and continue to enjoy the layout of the hostel, the cafe next door and the surrounding walks. Breakfast was nice and mini me ate for free. Shame evening meals are not being offered at the moment due to staff shortages and they no longer offer pack lunches for the following day. Great family interaction in the games area, many thanks to the lady that included mini me in their twister game, it really made her day. A low noise policy post 11pm would have been nice as there was a lot of corridor noise that made staying asleep a challenge. Overall a good visit, looking forward to returning.
Well what can I say, we got there and saw the place wow! All the staff we're incredibly friendly, you could get coffee or a beer in the evening and a hot breakfast was available. The room was incredibly clean the beds comfortable and loads of power points. I had to go to the car after dark which was spooky with no lights or light pollution but when I looked up and saw the stars and heard the Tawny Owl I had to just take in how lucky I was to experience the serenity in all its spooky glory. I then had the obligatory honk from a Pheasant which made me smile. In the night we heard some loud banging, well I didn't but my family did and it made me wonder if it was haunted??? Does any one know if it is , a house this old must have some stories? Great stay will stay again when in that neck of the woods.…
Walk to Dovedale on the road, walk on the riverside and round the garden, listen to the birdsong after breakfast and be thankful to be in one of England's best places. YHA are a terrible manager of this lovely place but it is beautiful and you will come bad year after year as we have done. Alton Towers is not the only reason to stay here
Ilam Hall far outweighs the other YHAs I have stayed in thus far (YHAs are perfect for afforfable UK travel where the accomodation is not onpy cheap but very cheerful). The YHA itself is lovely and has two large sitting areas with access to a range of games (including table tennis and pool). There is a small self catering kitchen with dining area (the catered dining area is much larger) so this was the nore challenging aspect when multiple families were cooking and eating but its good to have use again. The grounds and garden is stunning and there is a NT tearoom on site if you fancy a treat after a days walk (if your there before 5pm). When you arrive, park and pay for your ticket inside the YHA rather than the machine. I was rather surprised by the space in my room which was a double ensuite with wardrobe and dressing table (my last experience, there wasnt enough room for a bag in a single ensuite). Its very comfortable (albeit except the matress for me) and warm. Would recommend a stay here for anyone out in the peaks (which are beautiful so do go). …
