I went back to RUKA (my second visit) in January 2020 with my friend, who was having his first visit. There was just the two of us, but we each wanted our own bathroom and bedroom, so this apartment fit the bill. It had two twin rooms (one en-suite) with a smaller third room having a double and single bunk bed. The sofa could also be slept on if required. While 8 people could stay here it would be a real squeeze. A family of 4 would be comfortable and it was plenty spacious for just the two of us. The under occupancy supplement was well worth the money as the apartment was exactly what we were after. The hot tub and sauna were very welcome sights at the end of the day!
The kitchen was very well equipped with a fridge freezer and cooking facilities. There was a large dining table with 8 seats and tv’s in both the master bedroom and lounge area. There was a large double shower and washing area next to the sauna with a separate toilet. There was also a good size hall way leading into the apartment with a rail for hanging coats and a large drying cabinet.
The Colorado restaurant was 1 floor down and you could walk to it without having to go outside. Breakfast was here daily, but the choice was very poor. Every day the same - stodgy porridge, some short frankfurter type sausages, small bits of bacon, 3 plain cereals, toast and fruit with salad, of all things! No waffles or pastries like you usually get. I ended up buying my own cereals and just having the toast with marmite I had also bought. Being a veggie there was little choice for me.
Classic pizza is also attached to the building and is well worth a visit. I had my first blue cheese pizza there and my goodness the flavour was out of this world. We ended up eating there 3 times it was so good. The apartments are perfectly positioned to walk out straight onto the piste and a chair lift and the gondola are all right there. There is a heated locker room downstairs, all key coded so no keys. Same for the rooms, we really liked this set up.
Reception were friendly and helpful and the apartment was mostly clean. A few missed spots like hairs on the cushions and a bit of dust but nothing major. I would stay here again quite happily and would recommend it to anyone. My friend thoroughly enjoyed the skiing on offer and the night sledging was a lot of fun. We went for the polar light festival and it was so worth it - very impressive! RUKA is fantastic and we will return in future. I’ve done many of the resorts in Finnish Lapland and RUKA is one of the best I have been to.

Room came with a sauna and bath (with shower above) which was very welcome after a full day skiing. I found the drying cabinet really useful to dry off and warm up ski gear. There was a kettle, microwave, hob, sink and fridge if you want to self cater. We stayed B&B and the breakfast was fine, nothing special but covered all the basics, hot cold fruit cereal etc . As it gets dark early the slopes are floodlit and you can ski all day. Hotel is opposite the Scandic. Both hotels being less than 200m from the lifts. This was great as you can pop in and out of the hotel and village as you like and be immediately back on the lifts. We are likely to book Finland again and will probably return here

We stayed for a week in February 2022 as advanced skiers. These apartments were wonderful. Spacious, modern and cosy. The sauna was a delightful treat. All apartments have a utility area which was unexpected. The bathroom was warm and extremely clean. The entire hotel is essentially brand new. No key required but instead a code is used which is modern and helpful. Wonderful breakfast and dinner options available. The hotel catered extremely well for myself as a vegetarian and my partner who is vegan. A particular mention to Yona who worked in the restaurant who was extremely attentive and went above and beyond to help us, particularly with allergies within our party. We could ski right up to the hotel entrance, next to the Gondola, with the locker room metres away as well as a mini-supermarket. We could not have wished for a more perfect stay. We have previously stayed in Ruka Village but enjoyed Ruka Valley even more.

Went there with crystalski and was shocked we didn’t have to check in or get keys. Received a letter from the rep stating our 5 digit numeric code to unlock the apartment door which was really simple and very welcome. Also had a code for our individual ski locker downstairs.
The apartment was very functional but well laid out. Bed was fine but pillows were small. Make sure you check the drawers as the extra towels are in there. There is no housekeeping all week.
We had a studio (rukavillage30 on the official website), so we were entitled to breakfast in the attached Colorado bar. Breakfast was ok but the same each day. Some people came from other apartment blocks but nobody ever questioned if we were entitled to a breakfast. It was very relaxed.
The drying cupboard in the apartment was really handy. The sauna was great too.
It seemed like everything was well~thought out to make your stay as relaxed as possible.
Use the supermarket for cheaper beer and snacks.
At first, we thought the Finns were a bit miserable, as they never went out of their way to be friendly but as soon as you talked to them, they changed their attitude and were very chatty. I guess they are more reserved than we are.
All in all, the apartments were ideal, especially being a few paces from the gondola and main chairlift. Worth a trip but I doubt we will return as the 30 runs aren’t enough to keep you interested over 6 days of skiing. They were relatively easy compared to the Alps but don’t let that put you off because everyone appreciates a piste to themselves at some point!
We paid to see the northern lights but saw nothing. Decided to just walk outside at midnight onto blue piste 6 and saw an amazing aurora on two separate nights for free.

The hotel/apartments were great, amazing location, fully equipped apartment...

The only downside was the food, we stayed half board so had breakfast in the Colorado bar, the selection was very limited and they only had one 2 slice toaster which was very frustrating. The staff were also rude and very unhelpful.
Dinner was in the piste restaurant, staff were very friendly and there was a kids play area which was great. However the food selection was very poor: 2 meat options, one veg and one potato and the only drinks available were water and coffee. Each meal worked out at £26 per person per night, it was definitely not worth that when you can buy a large pizza over the road for £14!

We have already booked again for next year but this time self-catering!

The apartment was in a good location in the middle of Ruka village. We liked the apartment's own sauna and balcony. The equipment of the apartment was also good. There were a lot of signs of use everywhere, such as the bathroom cabinet and countertop.

The sounds of the party crowd and the thump of the bass could be heard clearly in the room so if you're looking for a quiet place, I wouldn't recommend this at least on the weekend.

Breakfast was nothing special, only a limited basic selection.

Ruka Finland was a great location, we went with Crystal Ski. Alleged transfer was 25 mins it took us well over an hour. Also had to wait at the airport as our coach was still being used by others waiting to get in to the airport. Very small airport and limited capacity with crystal bringing so many people in a small time frame put a strain on the airport. That said all the airport staff were very helpful and friendly. Crystal communications are poor. Welcome letter had different information than what we were told. Even got a text that contradicted the letter and that was sent late. We went to the welcome talk and again got different info that should have been passed on arrival. That was the last we saw of Crystal reps until departure. The apartment was great sauna was great after skiing and room very good. Really great getting into the room with the code. Food was awful. Do not do half-board. Self-catering is the way. Evening meal first night was told to order off the menu. This was wrong and there was a hot (was not hot, lukewarm at best) and cold buffet. Pudding was frozen still one night. Buffet was out long before we got to it and you could tell. That said one or two mains were nice the salmon and lasagna. The fish on Friday was bad.
Plenty of places to eat, but not cheep, pizzeria lukewarm was a short walk out of the village and was very nice.
Skiing is for beginners but was still enjoyed the skiing. Wind was an issue and the gondola was closed most of the week. Night skiing was also fun.

Second visit to Ruka and stay at this hotel booked through crystal. Location is brilliant. Meters from the gondola and all the shops and restaurants. Rooms are clean tidy and perfect set up with fridge microwave hob kettle etc, everything but an oven in the 2 bed studio. Welcomed the bath and sauna after a ski. Only real criticisms are that the boot room is a bit tight and whilst there is a bar downstairs, there is no real reception area. Bar and restaurant is western themed and a little dark as a result. Breakfast was basic but nice. Could do with more than an a two slot toaster serving the whole restaurant. If I was staying in Ruka village again I would probably comeback here.

Kept checking the web cam each night and saw the northern lights twice from the top of slope 6 behind the gondola,

Homemade ring doughnuts from the cafe in the centre of town are not to be missed

This hotel was the perfect spot to stay in Ruka! Very close to the lifts, boarding was sick! Never been that cold in my life, I’m a born and raised Texan but it sure was fun to experience it. Very comfortable room for my friends and I. Great bar and restaurant downstairs! Staff was very friendly. I did leave my goggles and would love to get them back if possible, I sent an email but haven’t heard back. Other than that, loved the stay and would definitely stay there if I ever find myself in Ruka again.

We spent a week at the Ski inn Ruka in January 2015 for a week of skiing and to celebrate a birthday. Being 20 and 22 we were worried about things to keep us entertained but the resort covered these bases with no problems.

First the room, we got a room right beside reception and the main front door and expected a little noise from other guests/staff but actually got the opposite. The sound proofing was first class and we didn't hear a peep when we were in the room. The room itself was spacious for a couple, with;
A large double bed which was comfortable and very clean.
A flat screen TV which did have a couple of English channels although we didn't make much use of them. Miss World pageant was on which we had a giggle at.
Plenty of storage for all our skiing gear and clothes, including a drying cupboard for wet jackets, boots, socks and everything else. We'd stick it on overnight and climb into bone dry, lovely and warm gear the next morning. There's also space to pop ski's in the room which we did although there are lockers in the basement of the hotel.
The balcony was a nice touch and we were lucky and got one overlooking the vast Finnish wilderness of thousands of snow topped pine trees. Be very careful opening it though, the snow falls deep and fast. It was a couple of centimetres when we arrived (obviously had been cleared prior to our arrival) but by day 3 it was a foot deep easy, making closing the door after being opened very difficult and messy which we found out the hard way. Not the hotels fault but just a heads up!
The bathroom was by far my favourite part. It's a huge wet room with an amazing heated floor which they advise to keep on 24/7, a sauna and a huge bath/shower. The towels were new and fluffy, sinks and toilet very clean as well as everything else. More than enough space for a couple to get ready.
We got patchy WiFi in the room but found a sweet spot for netflix on my laptop so we used this a lot on a night, but we were right beside reception so I wouldn't expect extremely strong connection further into the hotel.

There is a restaurant build into the hotel right beside reception and this is a must try! Me and my girlfriend went 3 or 4 times in the week and everything we tried was delicious, the grilled cheese.... don't get me dreaming! Please be aware Finland is EU, plus they earn a lot more than us so don't expect cheap, if anything it's a little more expensive. We paid €10 for a pint and a Amaretto and Coke. But I've paid the same in Switzerland, France, even England for that matter. But be prepared! We paid €50 each time we visited the restaurant for a main course and a couple of drinks for 2. Totally worth it.

Somewhere else extremely worth visiting is the pizzeria! I can't remember it's name but it's beside the shopping mall and bowling alley. It's a little expensive (around Dominoes prices in the UK) but very worth it for a meal in bed with a few drinks. If you like garlic sauce ask for Garlic Mayonnaise. We made the mistake of asking for garlic sauce and literally got crushed garlic which stank our room out for a day or two haha! The Finnish language is indecipherable to me so I struggled reading the menu until I realised there's an English one provided.. Doh.
There's also a subway in the mall which we tried as well as a supermarket which we used daily. It has english Soft drinks, ice cream, crisps and stuff and you can just about make out the Finnish foods there. It's expensive but not insane. There's a little pastry counter which we cleaned out daily. Lush!

Our highlight of the holiday was the excursions we tried. Thomsons reps tried to get us to go with them but their prices where crazy and their groups huge. We simply crossed the road (ice rink) over to the adventure place and spoke to the nice lady in there. Here we got a 50km snowmobile ride to a husky ride followed by a husky ride then a snowmobile ride home. It was simply amazing, possible the best thing I've ever done. We were alone with the instructor as nobody else had booked that day and that made it extra special, our guide (really sorry I can't remember his name, I couldn't pronounce it too well :( was a tall guy with glasses) was the best. Easy to talk to, understood I wanted to go fast as a young guy and we rallied around the forest for probably 2 hours before we arrived at the husky farm which was also amazing. My girlfriend loves animals and fell in love with the puppies, huskies and reindeer there. Oh and the random cat haha. We then raced back through the most amazing isolated environment I've ever felt. I've never heard silence like it! We got stuck a couple of times (including instructor) so my other half got to sit and laugh a couple of times whilst we tried to dig and pull the snowmobiles out!

To be honest I was surprised to say the skiing came last! We loved it, although the whole floodlight thing is very strange. The skiing starts early and finishes around 6pm but be prepared to ski under lights. Nice range of runs but not the best marking. The run listed "easy way to ruka" isn't as easy as it seems and I saw a good amount of beginners struggling down there. Just be warned the other chair lift is an easier run. The one to left of home slope.

Overall a brilliant holiday and magical country. Would definitely go again. Hotel was amazing!

Hi , I was in Ruka from the 23rd of December through to 30th. I have a 8 year old and an 11 year old so the Santa thing was a large part. We went to Santa's Secret Cottage. What was annoying was that our travel agent said booking when in the resort is easy for everything, she had obviously never been especially at Christmas as many places were booked and people had been before therefore on the ball with pre booking. My advise would be to book in advance. The children loved the Santa experience, different because it is Finnish style but very magical for my little one. The skiing we book the kids in Ski School and when we arrived the reps hadn't a clue ( Crystal ) because they hadn't been there long. We arrived at 10 pm and ski school starts at 10am with the ski hire shop opening at 9am so that was impossible which the reps couldn't understand, so the 2pm ski school worked better for us, but I had to fight with the reps to change it. I didn't see a pool in Ruka but there is lots to do if skiing is also built into your day, our problem was fitting everything in because we skied everyday including Christmas day which was brilliant. There isn't miles of piste but enough for the time you are out because of the cold. We did the husky rides which was an great experience because I drove one and my wife drove the other with a child in each, that is definitely worth a go, but be prepared it was approximately £500. Great Christmas experience, it was a one off for us and glad we did it, we are not the people to return year after year anywhere, but for us it was a very memorable time which is what we wanted. Hope this helps.
