Sudamala Resort, Seraya, is frequently lauded for its exceptional service, with the staff earning praise for their friendliness and professionalism. The resort's spotless condition and commitment to eco-friendliness have not gone unnoticed by guests. Its tranquil beachfront setting offers a serene atmosphere and stunning views, although safety around the coral reef has been a minor concern for some. While the amenities, including snorkeling and water activities, receive high marks, opinions on value and room charges vary, with a few guests highlighting additional costs.

The place is lovely. The staff is polite, very kind and above all smiling. They are very attentive to cleanliness and hygiene. We also ate very well! They were 6 wonderful days of absolute relaxation after the tour of Bali. Many congratulations to all. We have left a little piece of our heart in this Resort!

We had such a lovely stay at the Sudamala - A perfect beach / snorkelling / diving resort. Huberth and his team were fantastic and really looked after us. After our first night we already wanted to extend our stay to four nights! We made lots of new friends on this holiday. The food was excellent too. No complaints at all. Can’t wait to come back!

Best place for staycation. With very beautiful view and underwater flora and fauna. Nice food and ambience. Suitable for children.
Cell signal is not too good but It is not a problem for someone who needs calm and quiet place. You can also find other facilities like gym and dive centre.

Paradisiaco, bungalow accoglienti, estremamente puliti e lussuosi.
Sabbia bianca....mare stupendo. Bella piscina e dettagli curati....sdrai comodi con materassini a disposizione di tutti.

Dear SISMONEW, thank you very much for your nice review of Sudamala Resort, Seraya. I am very happy to read such fantastic feedback from your stay with us. I see you have really enjoyed the bungalows and the room amenities. It is true that we have a very good and unique house reef right in front of the resort and it is well protected, the line with buoys makes that no boat can enter and you are always safe when snorkeling on our house reef. The reef is also very good for scuba diving and the on site Aqura Dive Center does dive the reef all the time with our guests. The private beach at Sudamala Resort, Seraya has very soft clean sand and is dotted with sunloungers for our guests, and when you want a change you can always go for a swim in our swimming pool. Thank you once again for this nice review and we hope to welcome you again in the future. Kind Regards, Koen Koen Vangrysperre Resort Manager Sudamala Resort, Seraya Pulau Seraya Kecil – Labuan Bajo – Komodo Flores, Nusa Tengara Timur Indonesia

Positive things:
1) Friendly staff (doing their best to help customers)
2) Bungalow style is nice
3) House reef offers good snorkeling

Negative things:
It is definitely not worth it $260/night that we paid. A fair price would be around $100/night.

1) Dive center: we went straight to the dive center as soon as arrived (early morning) to book dives and trip to Komodo/pink beach/Padar. We were told that they were fully booked for the next day (no availability for the scheduled dive trip) and they could only offer a dive at their house reef the next day (am I going all the way to Komodo only for a dive at their house reef ??). We then booked the trekking trip to Komodo/pink beach/Padar for our 3rd and last day on the island which also includes a dive at turtle city. The trip is OK but way too expensive. We ended up doing only two dives (nothing special) during our stay. As it is the only dive center on the island, they should GUARANTEE space for all the customers for any scheduled dive or trekking trip!

2) Weird experience (which really suggests lack of management): we were given a private beach bungalow next to the reception (it's ok but it is definitely the worse bungalow of the resort) and we immediately asked to change it. After checking and most likely consulting with the general manager, one member of the staff told us that all the private beach bungalows were fully booked. One couple arrived a few hours later and they were given one of the best private beach bungalows, which means that it was still available when we asked to change. I had also checked on booking.com (same dates of our stay) and 2 private beach bungalows were still available. After asking for clarifications, I have not been given a valid explanation and obviously they did not change our bungalow. The general manager never showed up in all these discussions!

3) Cleanliness: rooms are clean but can you give very dirty towels in a $260/night resort??

Overall, the resort has definitely the potential to be a great holidays destination.
However, personally I think that the current management is weak and not capable to properly run the resort.

Big big disappointment! Management was super rude before arrival. They tried charging us 3 different prices for transfer to the island. Apparently management is from Greece and they wanted to charge the transfer only in fixed euros. By law, they are actually obliged to charge in Indonesian Rupiah but when asked to do so they just adjusted prices to the exchange rate which makes it absurd expensive in local terms. Had a discussion over the phone on the day of arrival and they didn't shy away from calling us names. Really unacceptable and inappropriate!

Upon arrival we had a warm welcome by the staff. Everyone is very friendly and the infrastructure of the resort is excellent. I had a serious talk with the manager about what happened before and he was very friendly afterwards.

However, the dinner is just horrible. We stayed three nights and by the end half of the menu was unavailable. Only chicken and fish left, which were both obviously from the freezer. It's just unbelievable that a resort in this price category can't even provide fresh fish on a daily basis in Komodo national park.

The reef for snorkeling in front is nice, but nothing special if you went diving before. Snorkeling gear is old and basic.

As mentioned before, staff is super friendly but unfortunately really uneducated. Especially when it comes to the restaurant.

This resort had so much potential, but it needs so many adjustments. Friendly management is just a basic. You don't try to rip off your clients and when they figure it out you don't call them names. Please think twice before you even consider going here.

It's sad to say, but this really took away a part of the beauty that Flores and Komodo have to offer.

It is with some regret that I write this negative review as management and staff were friendly and well intentioned. I'll start with the two positives. First the food was better than expected given a series of negative reviews although the kitchen struggles to source quality ingredients. Secondly the room was clean and well appointed.

Now for the negatives which justify the low rating. 1) location is terrible if you have come to the area to access the wonders of Komodo National Park (eg dragons, bats, diving). The remote location is compounded by lack of speed boats. There are two slow boats (swimming is quicker!) and only ONE speed boat which is rarely available during our time. It took us 5 hours of travel on an uncomfortable slow boat to see the bats. The travel time would have been cut by 3 hours if a speed boat was available. If you have come to the area to see the Komodo Park then I strongly suggest you avoid this INCONVENIENTLY located hotel. Contrary to what we were told, other major hotels were far better located. 2) WIFI is terrible as the hotel is remotely located and has not constructed its own tower yet. 3) Drop off transfer service was a joke!!!! We were told our time of departure 5 minutes before we left and then deposited on a slow boat which dumped us at the harbour. We then had to hitch on the back of a truck to get us to airport as no taxi was available and had not been arranged by hotel. 4) quite a lot of mosquitos and jelly fish in waters. 5) service at restaurant was extremely slow at dinner times. It took 1 hour to get food when hotel was busy. In fact it was with some relief when they had a buffet on particularly busy nights as it cut the wait time. 6) the trips to Komodo and Bats felt very DIY. No water offered on boat and zero explanation about bats. Lack of water on a 5.5 hour bat return journey was beyond belief.

The hotel will probably improve in time but the location is a major drawback (and compounded by lack of speed boats) if you have come to enjoy Komodo Park. Do not believe the hotel if they tell you that all hotels have similar inconvenient location - this is not true!

Response from SerayaHotel, Guest Relations Manager at Sudamala Resort, Seraya
Responded 28 Jan 2016
Dear reviewer J., It is with great sadness to see your review especially since on the day of your departure you said so many kind words. However, it is an honor to receive such feedback as we are given the opportunity to put things in a right track and not be blinded by a spirit of vengeance, although we are very grateful and happy that you appreciated the hotel itself rather than the third party services that we are forced to provide occasionally for our guests. So to start with the points we would like to provide some clarifications as mentioned above in your review: On point 1) We have clearly stated the location of our resort with coordinates and locations on the most famous mapping websites so our guests always know the exact area were we are. We do have a speed boat with two 100 horse power engines that can reach speed of 24-25 mph and cover the distance to Komodo National park in less than 2 hours. We also have agreements with extra speedboats in case of need. Compared to all Phinisi Boats, they need at least 4-5 hours from Labuan Bajo to any Komodo National Park destination. More over our resort is 4.5 miles of the port of Labuan Bajo, hence the comment "INCONVENIENTLY" would be quite subjective. To answer your comment about the slow boat and the Kalong island, yes we do not offer the speed boat for this excursion during the rainy season as it has to be at night available in case of emergency. That is because during rainy season weather can change unexpectedly and storms may require urgent transportation of guests. On point 2) we would like to inform you that unlikely other resorts in the area, located on a private island that is, we have installed a very expensive satellite system to provide connectivity to our guests. Most of the more” conveniently located” hotels will either restrict access or even charge you for this service. But most importantly our aim is to provide a destination for relaxation and help our guests create a memorable experience without having constant dependence on the internet. In other words, a real experience worth remembering and then worth sharing! On point 3) The specific incident occurred with you only, and for two main reasons, the day of your departure the private car drivers decided not to work as it was holiday, hence we did not charge any extra amount for this as we our selves were trying to bring supplies for the day with no success due to third party decisions. We guarantee that this incident occurred only on the 3rd of January which was a Sunday and unfortunately even when we offered to specific drivers thrice the normal amount of fee, they declined. On point 4) On the welcome area the first day of your arrival, we informed you that our resort is being pest controlled daily and we made clear to you that you should have all doors closed and always use your mosquito net during the night. Moreover, a member of our staff provided you, minutes after your check-in, a mosquito repellant for you to use for extra safety and free of charge. We apologize but this is as far as we can go in terms of protecting you from mosquitos. Concerning the jelly fish unfortunately the currents brought a few but be sure that our first aid kid is fully equipped with all necessary treatments and nevertheless we cannot and will not pollute the waters with chemicals to remove the jelly fish from the sea that occasionally may be carried by the small water currents. All guests again are being informed on arrival about the reef and what they should be aware of when snorkeling during each period of stay. On point 5) Yes you are absolutely right about the slow service which is a result of a hotel being open less than 5 months and the staff, that is local from Flores, needing to be trained in order to become capable to provide service according to western standards. The fact that we changed the service is proof of our team realized and adapted in the situation in order to provide the best possible service to our guests. On point 6) As aforementioned the Kalong island excursion is strictly done with the slow boat for security issues as it takes place during dusk and it was during the rainy season. Concerning the explanations about the bats we have written information about the excursion in the reception desk and unfortunately there are no licensed guides that can actually provide further information during the excursion. The only guides in the area are located in Komodo and they are rangers rather than tour guides. To sum up, your above comments are always welcome when it comes to objectivity, we tended to all your needs and you claimed always to be happy with our services, should have we known that something was not in your standards we would have gone over board to sort it out for you. A passive aggressive review would just create disappointment as even our owners were personally trying to make you feel comfortable during your stay and you gave them impression that you really enjoyed your stay in our resort. Regardless we were honored to have had you but disappointed that you found it “TERRIBLE” as we had never received in person such a feedback from you or your partner. Thank you

Seraya is one of these places it's so easy to fall in love with: scenery, snorkeling. A remote island, very nice Manggarai hosts... And a short 40min boat drive from LabuanBajo.

Unfortunately it has been closed now since December 2013, and it should reopen early 2015.

On the usual sunrise side new owners are building now a more upscale place.

On the other side (sunset side) simple New bungalows are being built by the previous owners of the place.

I can't wait to go back....

I concur. There is one restaurant there, with what I believe offers a variety. If you speak to the Chef nicely at lunchtime, he may be able to help with your requests for dinner. I thought they were very accommodating if you can them notice
