Hotel Comitan is a great place for budget travelers who also want a nicely-decorated property. Our room was spacious, with a dresser, two small tables with drawers, and a closet. Just outside in the semi-enclosed hallway was a nice table with 4 chairs and a view to the street, so it was like having our own living room. We could usually only get enough hot water for one of us to shower at a time, but this is not uncommon in Mexican hotels. While rooms do not contain cooking facilities, there was a microwave we could use and a bit of space in the lobby to store cold food. The staff was extremely kind and helpful. A variety of drinks and snacks were available for purchase at the front desk. Hotel Comitan is within ten-minutes walking distance of the bus station where one arrives from other cities like San Cristobal. [We old folks made the walk there with our luggage; it’s uphill on the way back so we returned by taxi.] Right next door to the hotel are the ‘colectivos’ to take you to Lagos de Montebello, Chinqultic and Tenam Puente. Colectivos to Chiflon Waterfalls and Lagunas de Colon are a few blocks away. The main plaza is about 7 or 8 minutes in one direction; if you turn right from the hotel and right again, more restaurants are about 5 minutes away, including new and modern ones like Hoppo’s, which stays open till 11:00. A burger, crepes, and the best not-fried potatoes we ever ate are a 2 or 3 minute walk the opposite direction and also stay open until 11. For some reason – perhaps because of the “Comitan” part of its sign being so small – people told us many times that there was no Hotel Comitan. [Since we walked everywhere, we got disoriented at times and asked for directions.] There may also be confusion because Hotel Comitan is on 2nd AVENUE and very near the corner of 2nd STREET and people would swear it was not on 2nd and pay no attention to our saying it was 2nd AVENUE not 2nd STREET. In the near future the hotel may re-open its restaurant to include a very simple breakfast and coffee, or make cooking facilities available. It would also be a good spot for a longer stay if one plans to spend the winter there and needs affordable but clean, decent lodging.…
