My partner and I were looking forward to a quiet weekend with breath taking views and this place seemed to be the ideal spot for it! Booked a 1 night stay with breakfast and booked a massage at the spa. However, we were quite disappointed once we got there and throughout our stay. The hotel feels very modern but cold at the same time, very simple and neutral almost minimalist. Does not feel cozy at all with its all white walls decorated with some paintings that have nothing to do with the style or surroundings. We got into the garage without any sort of indications...once we got to the reception the staff advised us our room was ready (check in is only from 3 pm onwards, it was almost 2) which was a positive. The hotel room seemed nice but very basic, what you would expect from a solid 3* hotel. The view was magnificent; however, it was impossible not to notice the cracks on the walls, the stained carpet and cheap materials used in the bathroom. We noticed the lack of maintenance throughout the entire building (attached a couple of picks) The view does not compensate the price charged and its services, needs improvement. SPA – the staff at the reception was nice and prompted us to fill out a questionnaire with our preferences, allergies, health condition etc. Not sure why they bothered making us fill that as once we got to the massage room no questions were asked, the masseuses just massaged us like robots and it felt literally like they were ticking boxes, taking 2 min to massage each area. It is not cheap or worth it to be honest, very disappointing. After the spa treatment they offer tea and 2 cookies (literally 2 cookies…). Positive note is that you can also make use of the sauna and Turkish bath. Although the hotel policy has the use of flip flops and swimming caps as mandatory when we were out of the sauna, we noticed a staff member showing this area to guests. They were using boots and trainers and walking around the shower and sauna area. complete lack of hygiene from the staff themselves! Indoor swimming pool and other facilities were ok, but the really wow factor is the outdoor swimming pool. Breakfast area was also ok but very poor for a 5* hotel – having stayed in the other 5* facilities this does not compare at all, I would give it a solid 3*. Check in and check out services were fast and easy. Overall, staff is friendly but inexperienced and not very detailed oriented…Given this facility was a previous teaching school I was expecting a lot more. Won´t come back I´m afraid.

We stayed there for 7 days for a group workshop. The hotel located at a magnificent location. Simply stunning!! What a shame that the food does not match the 5 stars. Very basic food , oily food. Not much to eat if you are health couscous. Repetitive food, not creative and not tasty. Some people in our group were vegetarian or vegan and they didn’t have much to it. The service was ok! Not much more... I wouldn’t go back there or recommend it.

Modern and minimalist style hotel. The suites are large with a very large patio overlooking the Douro River. If we were there longer and had free time I would have loved to have sat on the patio watching the boats go by. The suite is divided with bedroom and bathroom with shower and living area and bathroom with toilet. The buffet breakfast was very varied. Staff was very professional and friendly.

My husband and I just stayed here for 3 nights. It is a beautiful property, everything you want as a getaway place from the hustle and bustle with scenic views of the Douro valley. However, the FB service needs a lot of work! The staff are nice but very inattentive and don’t anticipate Guest needs. It feels more of a transaction with no personable interaction. The spa team was excellent!

Originally from Porto I visit this hotel simply by curiosity and what a surprise! Staff very nice and great accommodations, the breakfast is rich and great and the swimming pool is just perfect with a view of the Douro (even it looks like a photo shooting session every 15 minutes). I also recommend the spa and the bar ! Thank you very much for these amazing memories and I will definitely come back again!

How deep is the infinity pool especially at the edge facing the river?
Dear Denise, Our Hotel is located 75 kilometres from Porto and 45 kilometres from Régua and is distanced from large urban centres although it can be easily accessed by car. A few metres from the hotel you will find Mosteiro Train Station where you can catch the Douro Train, which is one of the most pleasant in the country due to its line's proximity to the river and the natural beauty of its scenery. For further information, please contact directly the hotel.

Hi Luke Apologies for the late reply. We didn't see any shops nearby, but did come across a small cafe about 20 minutes walk. Turn left out of the hotel and head towards the church. They had a kitchen, so I'm guessing they may do food in high season. We stopped for a glass of very good wine and took away some bottles of water. I would recommend a trip to beautiful Pinhao if you have time. The train journey is spectacular and you can buy whatever you need there. Best wishes and have a great holiday!

Dear Fiona, The nearest winery is Quinta de Covela, which we deeply recommend to visit due to its coziness and small dimension. It is around 15 minutes from Douro Royal Valley, by car. However, if you prefer something more industrialized and with bigger wine production, you can visit Quinta da Pacheca or Quinta do Vallado, both in Régua (about 45km far). If you prefer, we can arrange you a tour once you arrive to the hotel. We wish you a safe trip. Marcelo Guedes Guest Service Agent - Douro Royal Valley Hotel & Spa
