We stayed here for one night on our way to Guatemala. We were traveling with two kids - 3 and 5 y.o. The room was basic but considering the place's remote location it had everything we needed. The bathroom was clean, there was hot water in the shower; the room had a ceiling fan (although there was no ceiling as... More

We went to Escudo Jaguar expecting something bad after the reviews on Trip Advisor. Have to say it was a wonderful surprise. The simple cottages are beside the Urumacinta River which you navigate to reach the hidden ruins of the lost ceremonial city of Yaxchitlan. The restaurant was absolutely fine. The food was good and eveything clean. The staff was... More

If you want to go to Yaxchilan before the crowds arrive in the early morning hours down the Usumacinta river your best choice might be to stay at the Escudo Jaguar. Plenty of cabanas, pool. The staff is unfriendly and does not care. The rooms are basic with fan and semi clean. The place is uncaring, the food basic and... More

As a jumping off point for Yaxchilan this hotel fits the bill. Rooms were clean and spacious, but no frills. Do not expect bottled water, hair driers, or other amenities. With great caution the shower could be adjusted to a comfortable temperature. Pool hadn't been cleaned, but the water was still refreshing after a hot drive. Service ranged from shy... More

Four of us stayed here, in two rooms, for one night. We came with low expectations but found that our rooms were clean, beds comfortable, bathrooms functional. Rooms had good screens, both under the thatched roof & over the window (I understand some rooms have both screens & mosquito netting, and they are in the process of replacing the netting... More

The bad points: - when we got to our room, the toilet was filthy with urine on the seat. They did clean it immediately, but still ... - the wifi did not work at all. - the mosquito defences in the room were as good as useless, as there were loads of holes in them, and a huge gap under... More

Sorry to all those glowing reviews, but this place is a total dump. The rooms are filthy, the staff mostly absent in the head, just an awful place to stay. Unfortunately, choices are limited in this town, so you may have to suffer it as we did. The only reason to stay here, is if you are trying to do... More

We stopped here for lunch after visiting Yaxchilan and the food was OK but not great and the service the same. I had breaded chicken breast with French fries – small pieces of chicken in breadcrumbs, bit overcooked and very dry. They misunderstood the order of three people in the group (despite the menu being in both English and Spanish),... More

Visited in June 2015. The cabana I stayed in was very acceptable, with ceiling fan proving adequate cooling at night, and the thatched roofs making for interesting experience. Cost was very reasonable. Most units were unoccupied and I suspect it left was running with a skeleton staff. The restaurant was ok, its staff were a little inexperienced, but tried hard... More

The hotel structures and layout of Escudo Jaguar are nice enough--palm thatched duplexes with porches within stone-throwing distance of the Usumacinta River, and the location is excellent for a next-day boat trip to the awe-inspiring Classic Maya ruins of Yaxchilan. But the hotel and restaurant are staffed by 20-something personnel who, unfortunately, are untrained, inexperienced, and absolutely clueless. Order coffee... More
