I have started this review for the 5th time and still, I do no think my words written today will truly give the "rating" that this boutique hotel deserves. Let me first talk about the events that unfolded. During our first silver service dinner Edmondo Segre, husband to Alessandra Segre, introduces himself and welcomes us to his second home (owners). They both live on the property adjacent to the hotel which he mentions in his second sentence to us. He also offers our cocker spaniel, Amylee, to roam freely and have as her own backyard. No need to "pick up" - quote-unquote. His warmth and love of hosting his guests are represented in his smile and eagerness to share his intimate knowledge of Italian history, culture, and naturally the wine. Last I checked I have not been welcomed by the owner of a hotel... oh wait that doesn't happen. "If you have a complaint talk to me", he says. If he is unable to do it he will facilitate it as best he can with his highly trained and organized staff who are so well instructed on when, where, how, what, etc to help each individual guest. Most are fluent in at least 3 languages - French, Italian, and English. If you asked around Russian, German and Spanish speakers are there as well. Having been greeted and welcomed we spent the next 9 nights enjoying a total rejuvenation of our mental states as well as the hospitality we have yet to experience anywhere else. Every staff member knew our likes and dislikes within the first day. Attending to our wants before we even spoke a word. A step ahead. I see some reviews about dated rooms. Let me give you an example to better illustrate my view on this topic - I watched as a 60-year-old camp in the heart of the Sabi Sands South Africa was renovated. At the time I thought yes that is exactly what it needs to keep up with what is now a "super luxury industry". On my return, I found the place heartless and stripped of its rich history. I had become separated, the work was not of the high standard that was once a norm, the smells, the textures, and the aura had vanished. I still feel deeply saddened by the event and can honestly tell you that the rooms do not need to be renovated, this is an establishment dating back to 1979. If you want to stay in a modern 5 Star Hilton then go stay there. This place is not that. It is so much more and not something that could be bought or sold on the market or for any cheap trip advisor review. For it is not in the cold materials that a hotel is made. It is what fills the halls, what kind of experience the staff creates, and the aura that one can be immersed in. On leaving all we wanted to do was turn around and go back. But like most of us, we slave to the needs of our capitalist ways and sell our precious time to go spend more time in places like this. We can't want to return. A thank you will not be enough but it is all I can write here - Thank you, Edmundo and Alessandra, it was truly pleasure.

La Meridiana to me offers some of the best things for which Italy is so famous. It is a wonderful retreat in a beautiful, quiet setting, offering personal and caring service. The restaurant is great and a paradise for wine lovers. Apart from the challenging golf course next door, La Meridiana is a perfect base from which to hike or visit the Ligurian coast and charming harbours such as Albenga, Alassio and Cervo.

A bit of a time warp where the furniture and carpets take you back to circa 1980. It’s all clean, but very dated. The cupboards are a bit cheap, the light switch broke, the phone didn’t work (a lightning strike apparently). The staff, particularly luggage and front desk were very attentive. The WiFi is good. The location is very pretty and quiet. Ideal for golfers and cyclists/hikers. For culture, Albenga and pretty hilltop villages are close by. The restaurant was average and slow. The kitchen had an off day I think. All-in-all I would rate the hotel a decent four star with friendly staff. But the price for a large room /suite should be Eur 250 and not Eur 500 they’re charging. For that they would need to do a major upgrade to the hotel which hasn’t happened for 40 years.
