Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We arrived at the hotel about noon, admittedly very early for check in, but in a howling wind, cold and lashing with rain. The woman behind reception was unwelcoming and unhelpful. She told us check in was at 3 pm and maybe we should get something to eat down the road. We did and returned at 1:30, now very wet. I asked if we could get an early check in and she said the room wasn’t ready so I asked to prioritise getting our room ready (it was a Monday morning out of season I thought this would be possible) with some tutting she contacted housekeeping to be told the room was ready. In 2 weeks in Canada staying in 5 different hotels this was the only unfriendly experience we had. The rooms and public spaces are old and tired, the double bed is small but comfortable, the pillows were synthetic, cheap and nasty. The bathroom was very small and the towels had seen better days (but were clean). The blinds were ill fitting and hopelessly inadequate at blocking out the light. There’s no doubt it had seen better days. Another annoyance was a card in the room saying there would no no housekeeping in the room due to social distancing! An excuse to save money. In our stay we only ever saw staff at check in and check out. At least the checkout staff were friendly. I would never stay here again or recommend the hotel.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with TripAdvisor users. While our townhouses are over 200 years old, all spaces are maintained annually. We just finished a complete hallway and common space painting. carpets are steam cleaned regularly. Starting May 1st, 2023 we are pleased to continue regular mid stay housekeeping services. While I regret to hear you did not enjoy my hotel, I suspect your impression was tainted when you were not able to access your room before our posted check in time. We are a very clean and comfortable charming historic hotel. However not for everyone. I hope the balance of your visit to Nova Scotia was enjoyable.

Convenient location to harbor and downtown sights but room is disappointing. I am writing this after getting no sleep last night. Our bed is lumpy queen sized with lumpy pillows. As I have neck and back issues this is most disappointing. My husband likes historic hotels so I booked this for his bday. Lovely lobby lounge where I sat to read. Furniture in room is old and a bit worn. Wing chair needs more supportive seat cushion and could do with reupholstering. Bath clean with skylight. Not issue for us as we expected this in older Heritage hotel is small 13” tv and many many stairs (no lift) with narrow hallways. Limited free parking onsite is a bonus downtown. If you are mobility impaired this is not for you. We passed on bfast box at $15 which you order the night prior. The receptionist was friendly and offered to get us assistance with luggage. Also old hotel so central heating and ac which you can not adjust in your room. Chilly evening so we were offered space heaters if needed. Our room had a fireplace with lectric logs which knocked out the chill a bit. At end of day comfort of bed is deal breaker knowing I have a 10 hour air travel day ahead.

Thank you for your post! Yes, we have many stairs. We do our best to make this evident and social media readers should be well aware from numerous past guest reviews. Thank you for mentioning our standard of cleanliness. We have a great Housekeeping squad this season and they take their commitment very seriously. Our Simmons BeautyRest bed sets are at "mid-life". I cant recall the last time we received a negative comment about them. That said, mattress firmness, is a very personal taste. Thank you for choosing to stay with us.

Very well located ( just a few minutes from the port), clean and comfy room, and above all a very helpful staff. Huge thanks especially to the receptionist Isabelle, who went out of her way to help us get to the airport on time when our taxi didn't come due to bad weather conditions. Only wish we had had time to try the restaurant as well as it looked wonderful too!

First time stay at The Halliburton and thoroughly enjoyed it. Cozy rooms and comfortable beds. Had a excellent meal. The duck was delicious and my wife had the Guinea hen. A special treat of crusted scallops was definitely a treat. The chef knows what he's doing. Our server Mallorie was very attentive and kept our wine glasses filled. She was very knowledgeable and had a genuine smile at all times. The best. I would highly recommend The Halliburton and especially the dining experience.

Great location, only five minutes from the boardwalk. Car parking which is such a bonus in Halifax. Staff helpful and friendly. We had a room right at the top in the eves, lots of stairs from the car park to get luggage up especially if its pouring down as it was for us.

This hotel has old style charm that is for sure! Be prepared to climb stairs and more stairs. They certainly could put a lift in to enable getting to your room with luggage and eliminate a heart attack! The bed pillows are as old as the furniture and smell of old perspiration! Had to wrap pillows in double towels! The flat screen is the size of a computer monitor and you can’t see the picture sitting in bed. We didn’t try the breakfast based on previous bad reviews and was an additional 15.00C per person. Parking is in back and to get from there to your room once again three flights of stairs. Not a memorable stay.

Thank you for posting your thoughts. I regret you did not enjoy your time with us. I assure you that our pillow cases and slips (yes two wraps) are changed after each stay. No, it would not be possible to install an elevator. Our stairs are well explained and publicized here. No our parking is not ideal but is free of charge! Many feel our breakfast offering is thoughtful and of good value. Optional too. A good example of visitor who should have chosen a "new build" hotel.

Ideally located for walking around the town of Halifax especially the waterfront. All the staff were excellent and very friendly. If you are unsteady on stairs make sure you get a room on the ground floor as some rooms require hiking boots.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 night stay at The Haliburton. Our room was located in the middle building. It was clean and comfortable with a sitting area. We were able to park our van in the small on-site parking lot behind the hotel. It is within walking distance of so many of the sites we wanted to see. Would definitely recommend this hotel and look forward to returning one day.

A good affordable hotel in downtown Halifax, within walking distance of everywhere you'd need to go. Free parking was provided nearby. Very friendly service. I would definitely stay here again in Halifax.
