Got invited to attend a dinner function at Winnipeg Marlborough Hotel last night on the 8th floor. Once arrived I was intimidated by a few people hanging around outside the hotel front door, and not sure they were the guests of the hotel, or they were panhandlers or they were drunk. The hotel is very run down. Stepped inside the elevator, the elevator floor was very sticky. At the dinner, my water glass still had food sticking to the stem. Checked out a couple more glasses but no luck to get a clean one. Set dinner included Cesar salad, dinner rolls, beef & dessert. The salad, dinner roll & dessert were good but my beef was extremely well done, dry and tasteless. In fact it tasted like a piece of dry pork chop to me. The room for the function had a very high ceiling with old European design. It would had been a beautiful room before but now the room is run down and needs upkeep just like the rest of the building.

Dear GS L, Thank you for taking the time to review our Historic property. We appreciate all the feedback we can get so we can pass this information on to Management. Marlborough Hall is a beautiful 105 year old room. With that comes it's challenges of plaster walls and dated technology. I will be sure to pass this in formation on to our maintenance team for better planning of larger scale projects of such.It's disappointing to hear that the glass-wear was not cleaned properly. I will be sure to pass this on to our Banquet set up crew. It's also disheartening to hear that your steak was not to your liking. Unfortunately, the event you attended had a dinner time slotted for 30 minutes prior and with that all the food sat in warmers upstairs waiting to be plated as soon as the presentations and voting was concluded.The beef was cooked Medium but continues to cook in the 160 degree warming cart. Once a dinner time runs late due to the program over running, beef quality is the first to be affected. We really do apologize for this. Thank you again for reaching out to us!

We had a concert at MTS Place so this was a really convenient location for us. It's economical (with a great breakfast included), and the location is fabulous. We didn't drive, but for those who do, there is parking across the street. There are various restaurants within walking distance (and breakfast at Joanna's Cafe is wonderful.) It's also a nice walk to the waterfront with the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and the Forks Market nearby. The downside is the number of people loitering around outside and inside of the hotel, as well as the intermittent wifi. The one elevator also closes quite fast, so don't let that catch you by surprise. We were on the 5th floor which had added security in that you had to use your room card to open the door leading into the corridor for the rooms. There is a small foyer with a couple of chairs and a vending machine as you exit the elevator onto the fifth floor. The one morning we were heading out, a woman was asleep on one of these chairs; she was still sleeping with her bare feet hanging over the chair's arm when we came back in the afternoon. We didn't inform receptionist about this, but there were cleaning staff on our floor that surely saw her and did nothing about it. There is a security guard on site to increase safety and to keep non-guests out of the hotel, but what kind of clientele are they that they loiter in the main foyer all day and sleep in the hotel public areas? The location is fantastic, but I'm not sure if it's worth the safety (or lack of) that you feel every time you have to walk past unsavory people to get to your room.

We our very proud that we can offer such a well received menu and include it in our economically priced accommodations. I'm sorry to hear you had so many interactions with "unsavory people". Our hotel is open to accommodating guests from different parts of the world so I reassure that the guests in the lobby and out front were in fact staying at the hotel. Our front doors open right onto public space, we have no control or jurisdiction on that space, so it's a daily challenge to politely ask those people not staying in the hotel to move along. We will take your feedback and pass it along to our wifi provider, security provider and our elevator service provider to ensure that they investigate these situations. Good staff, Joanna's a good restaurant with beautiful décor and the exterior of this 1914 hotel is impressive. That's where the positives end. Our room had a view of the interior courtyard, three walls. There was NO heat, the boiler not working. The pool was NOT working. NO parking validation They did provide us with a small heater, when the staff vacuumed caused our power to go out. The interior throughout is shabby, peeling walls, dumpy furniture. Even with security in the building, did not feel entirely safe. It did have good location to the downtown. There are other choices for that. It was cold, it is only going to get colder!
If you're parking in the parkade across the street, try to park in a stall across from the entrance, for visibility. No security.

Dear sylk56, I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the restaurant, location and the charm of the 1914 late Gothic hotel. However we are so very sorry for the disappointing experience you had. We are a 105 year old hotel and we try to maintain a clean and presentable and well maintained property throughout. I'm disheartened to hear that you did not feel the same way. The lack of parking is beyond the hotels control. All Downtown Winnipeg hotels charge for parking whether it's in their own lot or a neighboring parkade so I do apologize that the secured parkade directly across the street from the front doors was not to your liking. It's been a much cooler September than Winnipeg has ever experienced, and unfortunately with the size of the hotel's boiler, it requires pre-start up certification with the Fire Department, The hotel is on their list for "fall inspections", however with this cold snap, they are falling behind. Our team did the bet they could to pull out extra blankets from storage, get them freshly laundered and go out and purchase as many space heaters that they could find so each guest would be as comfortable as possible! That task in itself was quite the chore with most stores being sold out of the heater size that would be adequate for our guest rooms and power grid! In the end, after visiting 20 stores in several neighborhoods across the city, enough heaters were sourced to service the entire property Unfortunately it sounds like the efforts to ensure your comfort feel short. I also want to apologize about the pool being closed. We couldn't plan that a guest would dump a bottle of conditioner in the pool resulting in a foamy, filmy, creamy mess, so unfortunately the only solution we had was to dump the entire pool, clean it while it was empty and refill the water and wait for it to heat up to an acceptable temperature and re-balance the chemicals for safety. All in all it was a 5 day process that we could not have planned for. Should you find yourself in Winnipeg again, please reach out to me directly and allow me the opportunity to make this right! I was hesitant to book, but I like staying in historic properties, and it was only for one night, so I took a chance.

Turns out I did not get what I paid for. Deluxe room with a pillow-top bed, etc. I was in a dungeon on an upper floor. Good thing I was using the room only to sleep.

The public areas are great, and so were the staff. They also have a bar and restaurant on the main floor, with attentive service and good food.

WiFi was excellent, and the included breakfast was cooked to order and perfect.

I visited Winnipeg for the first time and I was hesitating to book this hotel because of the bad reviews. I can say I had a good time, it’s well located and clean in general. I don’t know why there was brown water running every time I wanted to take a shower. The room was clean but noisy and the view was not the best but good. If you are a solo traveller like me and just want to sleep, this is for you. Breakfast was good as well and staff. I heard stories about ghosts but I didn’t see anyone.

The hotel is located at very heart of downtown, it is a building over 100 years & we took public transportation, so I am afraid there is no free parking, or you can contact hotel directly.

I think it really depends on where your hotel room is and how the other guests behave during the time of your stay. Our room was on the second floor and closest to the elevator, yet we had no trouble sleeping for the nights... More
