On the one hand, its budget friendly, has friendly staff and is clean. On the other hand, there is no air conditioning, a train passes right outside and the immediate neighborhood isn't great. I usually like to stay near universities, because there are often interesting things nearby, but not so much here.
I spent two weeks at the hotel tairona and I very much enjoyed it. The staff were always helpful and courteous which I believe is common amongst Costa Rican people. The hotel is 1 minute walk from a Taco Bell, 5 minute walk from mall, and 2 minute walk from AM PM convenience store. My room was very spacious and comfortable and was always cleaned and prepared for me. My only issue with the hotel, which is no fault of their own, is their close proximity to the train station. At night the train would sound its loud horn and kept me awake at times. Also the rooms are not sound proof so if you have a noisy neighbour you will be able to hear them. Otherwise, great hotel and wonderful experience.
Every member of staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. Recommended - they also arranged a tour and a taxi. Close enough to walk into San Jose centre in about 30 mins and many interesting and varied local restaurants.
This hotel is pretty convenient. The staff is friendly and the relation price-service-room is good. Don't expect a swimming pool or a gym but it is close to a supermarket and good restaurants. Also, it has a private parking area within the location.
I was a student staying in the hotel for seven weeks. The service was great all around, take the time to get to know the people if you can. I had many great conversations with Roberto, who has the most English there. The included breakfast was very nice and the maids were great. When your in the hotel, you almost forget that your in the city. There is a Pops right near the hotel and University of Costa Rica is right across the street. There is also a lot of night life right around the university and the San Pedro mall. The only thing I did not like was the train horn early in the morning, but that's that. Overall would highly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in San Jose.
