Detailed Reviews
I stayed in the silver Eel in Roscommon overnight. The room was outstanding. Far better than some 4 star hotels I've stayed in. The breakfast was freshly cooked to order and the quality was sublime!
The staff in the bar were unbelievably friendly and efficient and the ladies serving breakfast were so friendly, nothing was a problem. I'm kind of hesitant to recommend as if it gets too busy I might not get a booking on my next visit! 🤣
Can't wait to go back. Well done Silver Eel!! 10 out of 10.

Just back from three wonderfully relaxing days at the Silver Eel…. I almost don’t want to review this special place lest too many find out about this well hidden secret! The Rooms are huge, as are the beds. en-suite perfect with white fluffy towels. If you need anything… just ask …. The owners just want you to be happy and nothing is s problem. The sea food offerings on the menu are wonderful and there is an diverse range of choice. The view is fabulous but it’s the quiet serenity of being at the lakes edge that works the magic of this place. Thank you so much Jackie and Colm….. hope to see you soon.

Perfect location. Fabulous staff. Fantastic food. Laid back friendly host Jackie made us very welcome. Our third time visiting and counting. Highly recommend this accommodation for a relaxing holiday. Views of the lake are beautiful with the boats coming and going.

I am reluctant to condemn this place in view of all the positive reviews it gets but I can only be honest about our two very strange nights there. Yes the location is lovely, the staff were friendly and the rooms were of a good standard but here is what happened when we booked three nights there.
The first night there was a serious problem with the pumped system in our en suite. Every ten minutes a very loud rat-tat-tat went off like a machine gun. This made sleep impossible and was bad for the nerves so I turned off the pump. I got up after 2 am to find the bathroom floor flooded so had to mop it up and put the pump back on. My wife remained in the room unable to sleep and I went out and slept in the car for the night. (Staff do not seem to remain on the premises overnight)
With many apologies ‘Irene’ tried to get the problem fixed but did not succeed. We were out for the day and that night were moved to a new room, it was also mentioned at that late stage that there would be a function on. After we had gone to bed loud thumping music began for a 21st birthday party. Irene had given us her number so we could ring her if we had any problem. As the music was still going strong at 2 am and there was much banging of doors by excited/drunk young people we rang her. There was no answer. Rang again but the phone had then been switched off so I got dressed and went down to investigate.
Irene was there and informed me the music would only go on for another fifteen minute. At 2.30 am the music seemed to stop but a couple of minutes later it all started up again including the banging doors. I don’t know when it finished but it was still going strong at 2.45 am when we packed up , drove to Newport and spent the rest of the night sleeping in the car – not something we expected to be doing in our late sixties.
In view of the good reviews I think we were just unlucky – plumbing can go wrong and the right thing was done in giving us another room but had we been informed in the morning that there was going to be a loud all night party under and around us then, being already sleep deprived we could have made other arrangements.
Being a bar/restaurant, with rooms directly above, this place cannot double as a party venue and a B&B on the same night. Irene has since rang and apologized again which I do appreciate.
Should you go there? Probably, but if you are a mature adult before booking get a guarantee there will be no parties the nights you are there and if you are not long out of your teens go on condition that you get an invitation to the party.

I stayed overnight at the Silver Eel in July 2023 while I was in Strokestown for a conference at Strokestown Park. I had originally booked for two nights, but I was unavoidably delayed by one day arriving in Strokestown. I felt terrible about having to ring the Silver Eel at the last moment to tell them I wouldn't be arriving until the following evening, but the staff couldn't have been nicer about it.
The Silver Eel is a multipurpose place, with a friendly country pub, a wedding/party venue, and B&B accommodation. I had never stayed at the Silver Eel before, but I had previously stayed in B&B rooms above pubs, so I was concerned about the possibility of noise when I saw that the Silver Eel has both B&B and a pub. I needn't have been concerned--the B&B bedrooms are not above the pub.
My conference at Strokestown Park held a banquet after the daylong conference, so I didn't arrive at the Silver Eel until about 9 o'clock at night. It was very convenient for me that the pub was still open when I finally arrived. The cheerful young woman tending bar showed me to my room, and even offered to carry my luggage upstairs for me.
The en suite room was very spacious and modern, scrupulously clean, and had full amenities. The room has slider doors that open onto a shared veranda on the first floor (or what Americans and Canadians call the second floor). I'm not a smoker, so I was glad there were no smokers on the veranda because second-hand smoke probably would have drifted into my room.
My drive to Strokestown and the day I had spent at Strokestown Park were during the record-breaking heat spell during the summer of 2013, so I was especially tired after attending the all-day conference and subsequent banquet. As a result, I slept until about 11 o'clock the next morning, so I assumed that I had missed breakfast. When I went down to the pub to pay my bill, the staff members would hear none of it. Not at all, they said, insisting on making me a full breakfast even though, by then, it was almost midday (for Americans and Canadians: noon). The breakfast was of excellent quality and filling; as a result, I didn't need to stop during my journey to eat again until I reached my home in Achill late that afternoon.
All in all, I was very pleased with my stay at the Silver Eel. I was traveling without my husband, so I was pleasantly surprised when I was not charged an extra fee for being a single, as many B&Bs do. It was excellent value for money. If I were to visit Strokestown again, I wouldn't hesitate a moment to stay at the Silver Eel.

Stayed here for a night and found it a real surprise. These is little clue when you turn up at what is a pretty standard pub what the very high standard of accommodation upstairs is. Had a room looking out over the lake with French doors out to a balcony which is communal with the other rooms (unoccupied when we were there). Huge bed, beautiful well decorated room and excellent bathroom - all worthy of a very good hotel. Only giving four stars as the balcony was very dusty and felt somewhat neglected. Not sure about the two banks of faded plastic flowers used as decoration. However, for 60 euro for two with breakfast, this has to be the best value ever. Warning note however - the pub only does food at weekends so you have to either take the picnic route or drive into Strokestown to fine something to eat. Can recommend the Yu Garden Chinese takeaway next to the Percy French hotel - beware the generous portions! Lovely friendly proprietor too.

This could be a wonderful place if they catered for guests on Mondays,Tuesday's, Wednesdays or Thursday's.
We booked for two nights on the mon the11th. & Tuesday the12th July and found that there were only 2 other guests
The next morning. We were given a key to a back door and a back stairway to our room, this room led on to a shared balcony over looking a a lake. We had to ring a mobile phone number to report the TV was not working, this was fixed when we went out for dinner, as there was no restaurant, unless you were staying on Friday,Saturday, or Sunday,
We rang the Mobile phone and cancelled our night on the 12th. ( on problem as we booked on Booking. Com)
The hotel was 5 miles outside Strokestown, but could be a wonderful location ( think Wineport Lodge)
Did not like the masorator? (Spelling) in the bathroom.
Breakfast was eatable but I think a lot of the food was cooked in a deep fat fryer.
Maybe management does not need clients as they may enough money in the bar and restaurant at the weekends.
Will not be back unless changes are made.

On a weekend break - Strokestown was a good stop off on the way from Dublin to Ballina. Jill and Irene were very welcoming. The room was spacious, clean and warm with a comfortable bed. There was a great view of the balcony and dining area. Glad we stopped off here.

Just outside Strokestown, lovely setting, free wi-fi, good breakfast. Our stay was for two nights. We made one sugggestion at breakfast and it was completed by days end. Dinner only served on weekends in off season. We would come back to stay here again.

We stayed at The Silver Eel after flying to Ireland to attend a family wedding. The wedding reception was to be held here so it seemed the obvious place for us to stay.
We took over 3 of the en-suite rooms and everyone of them was great! Nice big rooms, tastefully decorated, big comfy beds, we couldn't have asked for a nicer room.
We first went into the bar with the rest of the wedding party which was a lovely cosy place with a nice welcoming atmosphere. The staff were great, really friendly, welcoming and nothing was too much of a problem. The reception was held upstairs in a function room which again was really nice with a balcony and great views. The staff were great at serving the food, keeping everyones drinks topped up etc.
The food was amazing!
We ate a 3 course meal at the reception, breakfast the next morning and evening meal again on the day after. Considering there was a lot of people to serve at once i just cannot fault the food. Every single meal was cooked to perfection, nice sized portions, really tasty, great choice and everyone seemed to agree!
Next time we go to Ireland we will definitely be booking in back here we loved it.
Just a note as to why i have given 4 stars instead of 5. - for me to give a 5 everything has to be perfect and there were just some tiny little things that needed sorting even though they didnt really bother us.
* The rooms were freezing cold on arrival and one of the couples were in their 80s so really felt this
* The plumbing in the bathroom needed sorting, the toilet didnt flush properly without a lot of messing, one of the taps was twisting round and falling off on the sink and the shower was falling out of the wall (the bathrooms looked great though and the shower was hot and powerful)
* The wardrobe shelves were dusty and there was a broken rail shoved on the top shelf waiting to be fixed, along with other odd bits in drawers that needed clearing out
*. There was confusion over payments throughout the weekend. Some people were charged more than expected, others less than expected this included those of us that were actually staying and others that were just there for meals and drinks. None of the bills really made sense and i dont think they knew who to charge for what. We could have ended up just paying for the room if we hadn't have been honest enough to say about all the drinks we had added on the room bill too!
Over all its a great place, we can recommend and will most certainly return!
