Kinnitty Castle, is close to the picturesque village of Kinnitty, Co. Offaly set beautifully against a backdrop of the Slieve Bloom Mountains. The Castle has a long and turbulent history. Dating originally from 1209, Kinnitty was destroyed and rebuilt not once but twice and yet it retains character and oozes charm. Kinnity is in a great location only 90 minutes from Dublin and is a great stop off point for journeys west or southwards. It is an exceptional place for lovers of good food and the great outdoors.

Myself, my husband and our 7 month old little girl stayed here last night as I had a voucher I received as a birthday gift. We really enjoyed our stay however there were 1 or 2 issues. We went to the Dungeon Bar for food just after 4pm. We waited over 40 mins for 2 Caesar salads. No staff came near us to tell us why it was delayed. I did over hear staff talking and it sounded as if the chef's were upstairs helping at the wedding that was on, however I may have that wrong. When I asked how much longer our food would be one of the girls checked straight away and we had our food after another 5/10 mins. The staff were very apologetic and we received complimentary soft drinks and chips to compensate. Guests should keep in mind that this is a very old building and there isn't much in the ways of sound proofing. We stayed in a room on the ground floor of the Abbey Court. I could hear the people's conversations loud and clear from upstairs even though they were not being excessively noisy. I also found the wedding music quite loud. If I was staying again I would enquire if there was a wedding and request a room on the second floor and away from the wedding room if possible. Staff were all extremely friendly and helpful at all times. Food is amazing and very well priced. I highly recommend renting a mountain bike in the village and taking on the new MTB trails. Suitable for everyone even if you haven't been on a bike in years like myself! Phone coverage isn't great but the hotel does have really good wifi.

Just back from a one night stay, I was hesitant as I did my research after booking the castle. My partner had to be in birr for business so I took the opportunity, hoping to relax and unwind and that's exactly the kind of stay I had.

Firstly not a TV in sight in the castle which I loved. It's peaceful and historic and it gives you the chance to think and ground yourself without distraction. The room was clean and kept to a lovely temperature, the bathroom tiles could do with being replaced but I've most definitely seen worse. I stripped the bed on departure as I usually do (every little helps) and the bedding itself was prestine, especially by hotel standards. Sound does travel through the rooms and we could hear our neighbors but it didn't bother us as it's not the place you are up all night partying so come 11pm the we didn't hear a peep.

We availed of the archery wich was alot of fun and the instructor was a personality we won't forget! Would definitely recommend the activities for passing the afternoon. If that's not your thing, the rooms come with a historic leaflet which is great for giving a bit of insight when walking along and exploring the castle grounds.

I would recommend booking into the restaurant! The food was delicious and the atmosphere was calm with beautiful Irish ballads playing in the background. The serving staff are some of the most attentive I've ever come across we didn't lift a finger not even to pour a glass of wine.
After our meal we headed to the library bar for some after dinner cocktails, I found the room exquisite, people talking, card games and any amount of books to read, a very pleasent atmosphere.

All in all we really enjoyed our stay and have enquired on departure about booking a suite for our next stay as they sound amazing.

Would most definitely recommend.

We booked for one night and the grounds were so lovely that we didn’t leave the place.
The staff were polite and friendly.

If you are interested in history, the decor of the castle and the rooms themselves will delight you. The room could do with a dusting to get rid of the cobwebs but it’s not the end of the world.
I don’t normally bother with the free toiletries provided but these ones smelled lovely and I’d buy the soap in bulk if I could.

The food in the dungeon restaurant was nice, steak cooked perfectly but the dessert let it down. I’d recommend skipping the sticky toffee pudding as the cake was dry and the sauce was a tablespoon of condensed milk with nothing else done to it.
The breakfast was the only real let down, we booked for 10am and a lot of the items were already gone. I ended up having pancakes which were small and more egg than anything else.
Having said that, I’d happily stay again.

I purchased a voucher for my partner in May 2019 and due to Covid lockdown in May 2020, this voucher was extended to end September. In September, both Kildare (where I live) & Offaly where Kinnitty is had just come out of a 2nd county lockdown. As this wasn't the time for travel,we were being advised to stay home. I requested a further extension. I was refused at first, then a 2nd person extended it to end of Oct2020. I asked for a further extension on the basis that travel was not being advised due to rising Covid numbers, we were again refused, but told we could travel and have lunch or dinner! They actually thought it was ok to ask us to spend €200 on lunch or dinner. Very foolish, because if they had extended the voucher, it is likely, that when it was safe to do so, we would have stayed for a few days and spent a lot of money.

I am appalled at the handling of this in the current Covid situation. At no point did anyone even enquire if myself or my partner would be considered 'at risk' - the level of customer service here was dreadful. I should point out that we had been to Kinnitty previously and were recurring business.

In any event, rather than let them have our money for nothing, I travelled with a couple of friends for dinner in mid September. The food was just ok, however the service left a lot to be desired. Covid care was dreadful. The wait staff consistently leaned over us to reach other guests at the table. There was no need for this as there was plenty of room around the table. The head waiter (i think he was the head waiter) did not wear a face mask at any time during the night. I ordered extra potatoes from him and they never arrived.

Our wine, the most expensive bottle on the menu, was opened by the waitress somewhere away from our table - highly irregular, no checking of the vintage, or quality. The cork nowhere to be found. Definitely not how fine wine should be served.

Overall, what should have been a weekend stay/ visit turned into a mediocre dinner.

I did write to the management, following our visit, but they have not as yet replied. In such uncertain times, the handling of this issue was very poor. In contrast to Barberstown Castle, who honoured a voucher that was 4 years out of date - that is customer service.

As mentioned previously, we had been visitors to Kinnitty in the past, but will not support this business in the future. Shame on you, in the midst of a pandemic you could have offered some customer service.

I was down the Midlands on work related so decided to extend out stay and opted for Kinnitty castle.

The approach to the castle beautiful,we received a warm welcome and shown to our room.

The room was spacious and clean, almost all you need, except a clothes iron.
We tried the nature walks in the wooded areas, very well maintained with fun features kids would enjoy,we even got up close to the local red squirrels who seemed to enjoy the human company.

Inside the hotel is clean/spacious with rooms well maintained.
We tried the food, very tasty and options for all tastebuds and inflation busting prices and staff very friendly and accommodating,we were very impressed with our choices and wouldn't hesitate going back.

Just back from an amazing 2 night stay at Kinnitty Castle, originally due to stay in March but Covid-19 got in the way rescheduled for June and Covid spoilt that plan too so we moved to Aug and celebrated our 12 year wedding anniversary and oh my God it was worth the wait.. from the moment we arrived to the moment we left the staff couldn’t do enough for us, All social distancing measurements in place and lots of hand sanitizer stations throughout the castle so we felt very safe and secure.

We had Afternoon Tea on Sunday and loved the addition of an espresso shot of soup to start with, the sandwiches and tarts and cakes were delicious and all washed down with a glass of Prosecco. We went for a little walk around castle before checking in.. we were allocated the Slieve Bloom Suite in the main castle, our suite was huge and offered an amazing cast iron bath and a shower, lovely view overlooking the Forrest to the side of the castle.

For dinner both nights we ate in the Dungeon Bar and the food was so yummy and delicious we finished every last bite on our plates. That bread and butter pudding was heaven, we reserved the Monks Kitchen on both nights which is almost like a private dining room it was fab!..

Wandering around the castle we got chatting to Connor who very graciously gave us a little tour of the castle whilst telling us about the castle history, we even got to see the infamous “Geraldine” room, beautiful room but im not sure I’d be brave enough to stay the night there lol.

Ventured out on the 8Km looped walk with a picnic as we had great weather and what a way to work up an appetite for dinner, maps can be found at reception.

The Anti social cafe outside was a great spot to grab a late and sit out in the sunshine, very popular with walkers and bikers out exercising..

We’ve stayed in Castle hotels before but Kinnitty has been the best by far as you genuinely feel like you are staying in a castle as they kept it authentic and true to character, we can’t wait to return!

Kinnitty Castle is incredible. The old world charm the stunning Location and incredible history. I have stayed in Kinnitty 3 different times. Twice in the attic rooms and once in the Abbey rooms all three times I was made feel at home. The food is amazing staff are amazing. If you have an issue it will be solved immediately without hesitation and I never felt that I couldn't go to staff if I had an issue. The rooms are spotless and so comfortable and interesting the beds are incredibly comfortable and huge. Have to say that the manager is outstanding and really impressed me everytime I have visited. I will be back and I hope if you plan a trip book kinnitty you won't regret its worth every penny.
Big thanks to the staff it is much appreciated all you do

After the crazy year that was 2020 we decided that a little weekend break away was well deserved and Kinnitty castle gave us exactly what we were looking for.
Situated deep on the castles grounds the hotel is a excellent location for any couples who want to spend some quality alone time in the outdoors. The trails surrounding the castle are perfect for leisurely walks in the fresh country air.
The castle its self was above and beyond what we had imagined. It was like stepping back in time (but with all the modern luxurys). The room was inviting and warm, making for an excellent nights sleep, after filling up on the complementary chocolates.
Included in our package were both evening dinner and breakfast which were both exceptional and offered dishes that kept in touch with the medieval meets 21st century feel of the place.
Kinnitty was all we had wanted and more,it truly was the perfect rural escape.

What a fantastic trip my husband and I had to Kinnitty Castle. We stayed in the O'Carroll Suite which was out of this world, with beautiful antique furniture and fittings including an enormous elaborately carved bed. The food was top class, from starter to coffee, I can particularly recommend the bourbon smoked ribs which were the best I ever tasted, the sauce was so delicious and the meat was tender and juicy, my husband loved the devilled wings. Our mains were also delicious as were our desserts, I loved the sticky toffee pudding! Breakfast was also of a great standard and set us up for the day. The castle itself is full of old world charm and so many interesting pieces of furniture and paintings etc - we took hours looking at everything. The grounds are beautiful also, with utterly fantastic carved wooden pieces dotted around the woods, and a herd of deer visible from our window. To cap it all off, every one of the staff were so friendly and helpful from the moment we booked, all during our stay, to when they contacted me as we drove home to let me know I had left my kindle behind. They very kindly posted it out to me by registered post, wrapped securely in bubble wrap, jiffy bags and numerous envelopes so it arrived it perfect condition, that's service far above and beyond expectations, we will definitely be visiting Kinnitty again and would highly recommend it as a very unique experience.

This is not my first stay at Kinnity and up to now I have enjoyed several other stays there.
However this time, it was different. To start with they are relying on previous reputation to get them through...it is not up to 4 star quality currently. People get wowed by the fact they are in what has definitely held the vibe of a castle and the price reflects their 4 star claim, so I think guests get a little blindsided after that.
The bedroom was clean and cosy and again has that wow factor, but there were 2 different slugs crawling on the bathroom walls at different points.
The spa has long gone...there used to be a jacuzzi and salon at the entrance gate lodge but it is now gone. There is no pool.
The main hotel is very comfortable and ambient.
However, the dining experience left me cold.
We were part of a private event being held at the castle that evening and were in a private function room for dinner. After a very very long wait the waitresses came to take our orders. Some guests had already gone and brought back snacks to eat while we waited. We were presented with a set menu of 2 choices for main and 2 choices for starter. Fair enough- it was a pre arranged 2 course meal.
However, no choice for vegetarians in the starter so I enquired with the waitress who told me it was mushroom salad or she also thought there was a butternut squash soup. I chose the soup since the only vegetarian main featured mushrooms.
After a while she came back to tell me that the chef is too busy to serve a vegetarian starter to me and that I could either have the duck or chicken or nothing.
This was crazy considering he was serving vegetarian starters in the restaurant and surely the soup was prepped from earlier in the day, it could be ladled out in 10 seconds!
I sat watching the other guests eating their starters all were embarrassed at the obnoxious way in which I had been treated for no good reason, except the chef's apparent contempt for vegetarians.
Breakfast the following morning actually had a vegan option so why did he decide to leave me sitting with no starter at dinner? Was he in a bad mood? Was he busy? I don't care, either way I paid for the honour of being left with no food and he shouldnt have the end say.
Especially when I know he had options. Management should be concerned about this but they were not.
I have been vegetarian for 33 years now and have never been refused service before in my life.
The chef as I said in an email to management, needs to wake up, as in 2022 you will actually have vegetarian guests. You will have vegans too and people who have nut or other allergies. Will the chef just simply ignore the dietary preferences or needs of his guests and leave them hungry? The answer for me is 'yes' and despite the long lockdown with loss of business, the Management are unapologetic either. I said I would make a complaint directly rather than write a bad review, but in fairness, they didn't bother to .
Good luck keeping the 4 stars and dealing with some of our seasoned travellers from other parts of the world who won't tolerate such shoddy treatment.

We had a lovely short break at Kinnitty Castle. The staff were really friendly, helpful and courteous. Our review was a genuine reflection of what was a very nice short stay for us at a very difficult time. You are perfectly entitled to your opinion but do not disrespect those who enjoyed their stay & experience. Also remember that we live in a democratic society in Ireland & constructive feedback should be very welcome but accept others honestly held opinions even if they are in contrast to your own.

The Castle has a wing (used to be a sort of priory/monastery) thosemight be best as they are together on a corridor at the rear of the Castle.
