Kinnitty Castle, is close to the picturesque village of Kinnitty, Co. Offaly set beautifully against a backdrop of the Slieve Bloom Mountains. The Castle has a long and turbulent history. Dating originally from 1209, Kinnitty was destroyed and rebuilt not once but twice and yet it retains character and oozes charm. Kinnity is in a great location only 90 minutes from Dublin and is a great stop off point for journeys west or southwards. It is an exceptional place for lovers of good food and the great outdoors.

This review is long over due but I had to share my experience of the magical stay we had in Kinnitty. We had booked for two nights to celebrate our engagement. I had mentioned on booking that it was a special occasion and we were given one of the stunning suite rooms with the roll top bath overlooking the beautiful gardens . The rooms were fitted out beautifully in period style fabrics and some of the original features still could be seen . Fab!! When we arrived and were checking in we spoke to Robert the general manager who happened to be walking past . Robert was very forthcoming with information about the castle and different activities that we could avail of . After went to our room , a few mins late there was a knock on the door and a member of the team in Kinnitty was standing outside our door with 2 glasses of Prosecco. She said it was compliments of Robert the general manager and wished us a happy engagement and to contact him personally if we required anything . We were blown away . Irish hospitality at its best . What a great start . We then realised there was already a complimentary box of chocolates in the room , welcoming us to the hotel . That night we dined in the bar , all tip top . It was quiet that night but the staff in the bar were lovely . The following day we had arranged horse riding and were met my Noel I think was his name from the equestrian centre. What a character…. Beautiful morning . When we arrived back in Kinnitty we were met by Robert at the stables gate , enquiring how our stay was going. We asked Robert to join us for a coffee which he did for a few mins and filled us in on more interesting facts on the hotel . This stay had been one of the best I have had in Ireland , we felt so welcomed . And I’m Irish ! This is the true picture of Irish hospitality . Keep up the good work , Robert and all the team in Kinnitty . We will be back …. Before the wedding hopefully . M + M

We stayed in Kinnitty Castle for the February Bank Holiday weekend in the Bernard Suite. The room was nice and overlooked the castle entrance and the four poster bed was very comfortable. The staff were lovely and particularly Grainne who was very helpful. We had dinner both nights in the Sli Dala restaurant, the food was excellent and good value. Breakfast wasn't as good and the very young staff are not fully aware of the menu and what was available. No menus on table or given by staff. The floorboards were a bit creaky but that is to be expected in an old building. Attention to proper cleaning of upholstery on the seats in the suite and also in the dining room would enhance the experience. There was a lack of a proper lock on the bathroom door which we fixed with a piece of paper to keep it closed, lol. Nice walks through the wood. Lovely to wake up and see deer and ponies in the grounds in front of the castle. We enjoyed a very relaxing and peaceful weekend in Kinnitty.

I'll start with the positive, there is a beautiful scenic long driveway up to the castle (shame about the boarded up, ramshackle gatehouse), and the exterior of the castle is gorgeous. The staff checking us in were friendly, and the interior thus far looked good. Then we got into the room and both immediately noted the musty, damp smell of the room, and also that it was freezing cold! We decided to make a cup of tea to warm up, and there were only 2 teabags. My husband told me to keep his to one side so he could have a second cup, however the milk curdled when added and I noticed both milks were out of date! In fact all the milks on the tray were out of date. We called reception and explained, and asked for more teabags also, which they brought. When checking out the bathroom I noticed that the floor was dirty (literally just used some wet toilet paper and rubbed the ground around the sink and the dirt came up, so clearly the floor wasn't cleaned beforehand). There were also cobwebs in the corners of the bathroom and bedroom and within the bedside lamp. My husband showered and warned me that it was a terrible shower and that it would take me ages to wash my hair (he knows well now!), so I said I'd have a bath and wash the hair in there (also because I was absolutely freezing in the room). At this point my husband found a little portable oil-filled heater behind a chair, so that was a huge godsend! However there was no bath plug! (Sink plug was attached to it by chain). Again we asked reception. And they said "that's a strange request" to which my husband replied "it's pretty strange to have a bath that doesn't come with a plug!". He went off for a pint and I waited and waited in the room (under the duvet to keep warm). At this point I realised how thin the walls and ceilings were, as I could hear EVERY single word of my neighbours conversations (and intimate moments). Given how cold and filthy the floors were (and also the brown varnish from the bathroom's wooden floor was sticking in places to my bare feet) and no slippers provided, I asked my husband to ask for slippers as he passed reception on his return. I called them again after a while to ask about the plug and was told they couldn't find one. I asked them if they could take a bath plug from an unoccupied room. Which they then did. The toilet seat in the bathroom was broken, and would slide to one side when you sat, meaning you were on the cold porcelain, and the seat would fall against your back. During the night we were both woken by the conversation between the night porter and the guests along the hall, who were being moved because of a leak in their room (looking at previous reviews, clearly not the first time it's happened). The conversation was so loud that it sounded like it was happening in our room. Breakfast the following morning was terrible. We had been told the only slot available was 9am, which was fine, and you would imagine plenty of hot food would be available given that it was only halfway through breakfast. But the only hot item was the sausage (even though the food was kept in serve-yourself metal lidded containers). The toast was cold as it was delivered to the table also. I will say the one big positive was the evening meal in the dungeon bar, the saving grace of the trip. The food was delicious, even if the service was hit and miss. In summary, I have stayed in much better 3* hotels, this is not even at that standard, and I would not stay here again. Now perhaps there are other better rooms than ours, but you don't know what room you will get when you book.

Great time staying in an authentic castle in Ireland! Brian Boru room in the castle attic provided an exciting experience. Massive tester bed, stone fireplace and cool view. Castle grounds are neat to explore and are near a river flowing by. Food and drink was wonderful but the best part was the friendly personal staff!

Stayed one nite and if looking for a genuine castle experience you won't be disappointed, couldn't fault staff, all encounters were polite and professional, the only thing I didn't like was the room, stayed in the abbey wing and although a very nice room and expected for a castle room it was very musty but the walls seemed paper thin,I could genuinely hear conversations from the rooms either end literally word for word and those guests were not even talking loud in all fairness.Come 1am it was like a socially distance swingers party you could hear everything from every side of the room, very uncomfortable knowing if I could hear others they could hear us!!!I was up and gone by 9:30 as I didn't even feel comfortable talking with my wife as everyone around would hear the conversation, if I was to stay again I would probably try one of the suites and hopefully get more privacy, not a hotel for kids as there could be some very awkward conversations the following morning, all that aside breakfast was fine and if it's a genuine old castle stay your looking for this certainly covers it all, maybe upgrade to a suite though they seem to be in the main part of the castle.

Warm welcome in the depths of January. The Castle have a great value January offer, Food was better than excellent and the house whiskey is divine. The menu was a little disappointing but the cooking more than made up for it. Need to mind where you are going in the loft rooms as some low ceiling areas are low and a strangely positioned roof support might be in your way from the bed in the dark. A wonderful step back into Medieval Ireland. Highly recommended.

We booked Kinnitty castle for the new year weekend and we were not disappointed, we had a fabulous relaxing weekend away , I can’t fault this castle or it’s staff in anyways, we booked a suite for the weekend and allocated the butler suite which is at the front of the castle with a beautiful view of the land at the front. 😃 The room itself is stunning if you want anything modern this is not for you, massive rooms with antique furniture all blends in with this gothic style castle along with its old banquet hall in the court yard 👻 The food at the castle restaurant and down in the dungeon bar is outstanding to the chefs thank you for the amazing food 🍲 The staff in this castle are brilliant everyone of them know how to treat their guests 👍 This morning at breakfast I think the lady’s name was Anne , I’m not to sure but this lovely lady is a credit to the restaurant staff, thank you for the friendly and perfect service this morning 2/1/23 we had booked breakfast for 8am Lastly a massive thank you to mairead and Conor for the most friendly hospitality over the weekend, ❤️ Just one last thing , take the time to sit by the turf fire and enjoy the atmosphere and surroundings of this stunning castle

Booked at Kinnitty hotel without checking any reviews. We like castle hotel breaks, and this one had a good value compared with the others. We arrived during a cold, foggy afternoon/evening, which added to the mystery of the place. A short drive through a mystical forest brings you to a majestic hotel reminding you of a Transylvanian-inspired scene. Great welcome at reception, and off we go towards the room. The receptionist accompanies us and at one stage tells us that we will stay in the most famous room of the hotel. The Geraldine room, the most haunted one. Great start to a relaxing holiday! Real winter, a real castle and a haunted room... Memories for a lifetime. Excellent room, excellent service, excellent breakfast and dinners (in the main restaurant as well as in the dungeon bar). Every day we had some great chat/fun with the receptionists, who were glad to tell us all the legends of the place. The grounds of the hotel are also great (if you love history, there is plenty to see around), and we were fortunate to have some great winter scenes. Overall we really enjoyed the place and the people and hope to revisit it soon.
