We found a cheap good hotel in Tulum which had A/C, Hot water shower, double bed, TV, private bath for $32 usd/night

Cold showers, rats, and rain coming in through the roof on your head at night. Nasty Nylon sheets. and a heinously uncomfortable bed. Miles out of town.
