Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Hilton Playa del Carmen is lauded for its professional service and impeccable cleanliness, with guests celebrating the luxurious comfort provided by the well-maintained facilities. While the spacious rooms offer lovely views and amenities, some visitors have experienced issues with mustiness and noise.
The vibrant atmosphere, complete with lively entertainment, is a hit, though it may not suit those seeking tranquility. Despite the prime location near 5th Ave, the value is sometimes questioned due to additional charges and upselling, particularly for cabanas and premium drinks.

Detailed Reviews
Hotel's Favourite
We normally do not stay in all-inclusive resorts, but since my Hilton Credit Card offers an annual free night and a resort credit benefit, we decided to give this one a try and stayed for 2 nights.
Check-in: 4/5 stars
Parking was a little confusing; they do not offer valet parking and instead directed me to their gated parking lot. The person at the gate seemed confused and had to ask someone else what to do but eventually opened the gate so I could park. The person who checked us in was very friendly and professional. When we booked our room, we were limited to the lowest class room when using the free night, but since we are Diamond members, we were given a room upgrade to a "Garden View Suite".
Room: 4/5 stars
We stayed in room 1258, which was a short walk from the lobby. The room was large with two comfortable queen-sized beds, a TV with many channels in English, a sofa, table and chairs, a large in-room jacuzzi, and a balcony overlooking a grassy area with a view of the main pool in the distance. Although some reviews mentioned noise, our room was pretty quiet, and we slept soundly through the night. The mini fridge contained soda, water, and beer, and there was coffee and some snacks available. The bathroom was spacious with double sinks, and the shower had a rain shower head with plenty of hot water. My only complaint about the room was the bath towels were a little rough and there was a lack of outlets--there were only plugs right next to the bed but none by the table where I needed to plug in and use my laptop.
Pool area: 4/5 stars
We didn't use the pool, but it looked very nice. One day there was a foam party with a loud and somewhat obnoxious DJ, but people seemed to be having fun, though it wasn't really our thing.
Beach area: 3/5 stars
The beach at the hotel is rocky and not really swimmable. We spent an afternoon in one of the complimentary beach cabanas for Diamond members. Our waiter was friendly and always seemed to show up when we needed more drinks or when we wanted to order some lunch.
Food: 3.5/5 stars
Drinks and food were good but not exceptional. We ate at three of their restaurants: Rincon Mexicano, Kalamata, and Asiana. Asiana was the best of the three and was completely packed when we visited--fortunately, we had a reservation.
Room Service: 5/5 stars
We used room service for breakfast both mornings. The food arrived within the promised 30 minutes and was good. Another time we also called to have some cold beers brought to our room and they arrived right away.
Location: 5/5 stars
The hotel is beautiful and in a great location just a block from the more mellow end of the 5th Ave Pedestrian Mall and right on the beach. We enjoyed walking around and visited a few cafes north of the hotel on 5th and in the surrounding blocks.
Staff: 5/5 stars
Everybody who worked there was hard-working, friendly, and always seemed to have a smile on their faces.
Will definitely stay here again

+1
The grounds are beautiful and extremely clean. I constantly saw people cleaning up even the smallest bit of debris and making sure even the smallest spot was mopped up on the ground. Also, they went through a renovation so everything was updated and new. The rooms were very big and each had a balcony. We tried to upgrade our room and they told us they could not get us a pool view but we were able to see both the pool and the ocean even though it was considered a "garden view". Special thanks to Guillermo at the front desk for helping us.
We stayed for 5 days and thought we might be tired of the pool by the last day but the entertainment kept us there and we never felt the need to do any day trips because we were so content on the resort and not bored at all. Special thanks to Mauricio, Isaac, and Fernando. They made sure guests were happy and pleased with their entertainment and made an effort to make us feel at home.
The food was good and there was always something open for us. They even brought out a barbecue each day at the pool if you didn't want to leave your spot to go to a restaurant. The bartenders and wait staff by the pool area were very good. Most times I did not need to go up to the bar because a wait staff would be walking by and ask if we needed anything.
The location of this resort was awesome too. We felt very safe and would walk down to 5th ave every night to walk off our dinner and hear some great live music. We loved the singer at Taco City, she had an amazing voice and even sang happy birthday to my dad!
Highly recommend this resort and hope you have just as good a time as I did with my friends and family.

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.
We just spent two weeks at this resort. The food was great and of very good quality, The rooms and public areas are very clean and comfortable. Lots of complimentary bottled water, pop, beer and snacks in our mini fridge. We were surprised on our last night with a beautiful romantic tub of water lined with rose petals and a display on our bed which we loved. The staff were very friendly and courteous. A shout out to Juan and Carlos in the gym for their patience and knowledge. Be sure to visit the spa and take advantage of the hydrotherapy facilities and massages. Thank-you to (Louisa?) for 2 great massages during our stay. We especially enjoyed the new coffee bar and 24 hr cafe as well. Two nice, cool and quiet spots when the pool area became too hot and noisy for us more mature travellers. A/C was excellent in our room as well.
Our overall experience was great but if we could recommend improvements it would be that the hotel needs to do a better job of informing guests about the many facilities and activities available. The in-room tablet does not provide enough info.
Also, some poolside cabanas need to be rented while others do not. There should be signs on those which require rental to indicate such to avoid embarrassment and confusion. A simple sign stating 'by reservation only' and 'reserved' would do the trick.
The Hilton is very generous with water bottles, but in an effort to reduce plastic waste, we would suggest larger bottles but less quantity of them. We would also recommend a sign-out procedure for towels to reduce waste.
All in all, we were very happy with our stay at this resort.

If I could give zero stars, I would. Avoid this resort at all costs. I have had the worst experience day 1. I tried to give second and third chances, and if it wasn't for my friends wedding, I would have left after day 2. Day 1, dinner- the bottle of wine we ordered had turned, it clearly had gotten too hot, we asked for a new wine and were told we would be charged. So we said forget it, then it took almost 2 hours for our food to arrive, and one persons was cold as ice. Not the best start to vacat, but let it go. Day 2 Starting over with resort, went to go get ready for mmy friends wedding and I have zero water in my suite (I paid over $3k total for 3 nights 4 days). I tried to call front desk, no one answered, called reception, no one answered. I literally had to track down a cleaning lady who then called someone to report my issue. No one called back for 20 mins and when they did, they said "use your friends suite cause you won't have water til 4:30" My friends wedding was at 4. So,, I did just that and didn't have enough time
to get ready appropriately by wedding start time. At the wedding, the microphone went out right as my friends were exchanging their rings so no one could hear. They eventually got this fixed but not til after the ring exchange. Then came the reception. They had our food orders well in advance and yet it took forever to get our food, II had ordered chicken, everyone received their beef and I waited and waited and waited. Everyone at my table had finished their meal and they still had no chicken. I finally asked the waiter to bring me a beef as everyone was done and there was no chicken in sight. Day 3 I walked into my room in the afternoon and to my surprise there were three repairmen and a flooded bathroom. I was startled to have people in my room and then tried to ask what happened as their was wayer and paper towel looking items all over the floor. They told me something went wrong with the toilet, but yet one guy was under my sink. So this was the final straw! Went to the manager and after paying $3k to stay here she has only offered me aa complementary massage (valued at $129). This is unacceptable for what you pay and what you receive. Also all my friends in swim up rooms have yet to get hot water from their showers and we are three days in. Stay anywhere else! Stay somewhere you will get your monies worth and where they understand customer service. I will never be back, would have actually literally left early if it wasn't for the wedding, and I will never be back. I strongly suggest you do the same. Avoid this place like the plague!

We will not be coming back! Let's start by saying we are a couple in our early 50's
We have stayed at this property 5 times over the past 15 years as the Royal and loved it! Check in was never over 10 minutes. We were always welcomed with a cocktail or water and a cool cloth to wipe the travel grime and sweat off. Not this time!
Check in is 11:00 , we arrived at 2:30 , and did not get our room until 4pm ! We were told that they had 30 people ahead of us. We could have a snack and wait in the restaurant or lobby! Our luggage was left on the sidewalk. No upgrade's available. Our room was spotless and was kept that way all week. I do have to say, I slept great and loved the bed. My husband asked for a specific alcohol that he enjoys and has always been available in the rooms, heck they used to have dispensers on the wall, no more, the little bottles were $4 a piece, unless we upgraded," not available upon check in." The tequila bar is $10 and up for a shot!!! All inclusive???
Now on to the restaurants. We had breakfast the next day at Pelicano's , we arrived by 10:30 and were informed that it was too late for breakfast! Then we were told we could be served but, needed to be finished by 11:00.The service was good, but hurried and no smile! This happened at the pizza place by the pool and the bar on the right side of the building, both stopped serving at 4. The little Taco spot around the corner had good taco's! We were hard pressed to find seafood at any of the restaurants except for squid, octopus, and shrimp. No fresh sea Bass. We did purchase the lobster and steak at Spice,an additional $70 or $80. Cristlel Denis was our server and she was excellent as was the food. The chefs plate was an additional $89 per person . We did eat at the Italian restaurant but, had over an hour wait. The Steak place at Panama Jacks was really good but another hour wait.
The nightly entertainment was interesting!! LOL! I am not a snob or easily offended but , WOW!! I can now say I have seen a pole dance. I did find the entertainers to be beautiful but they could have used a few more clothes on. The pool was fun, loud, and very crowded. We had a great server by the name of Ezequiel Osorio he was always smiling and did a great job ! The small beach is washing away! It was kept clean but very crowded and I never did get offered a drink in the 3 hours I was out there. The public is allowed to put up umbrellas right in front of the hotel guest's. It was never like that before!
Overall we had a great time in Mexico" how can you not" but we will now have to find another Royal.

Dear Sam, Thank you for choosing our resort once again and for sharing your impressions. We are so happy to hear that our staff took good care of your needs, we'll gladly share your words with the people mentioned. I am very sorry for the confusion while checking-in, this is certainly not reflective of our Hilton hospitality, although the official check-in time is 3 PM we are sorry that your room was not ready until 4 PM. Your feedback regarding the liquor dispensers is appreciated. These were removed for safety reasons a couple of years before turning into Hilton. Although there are no liquor dispensers, we do provide the same spirits via suite service, at no additional cost. Sorry for the confusion. Please, accept my apologies for the impression you got from our team at Pelicanos, our management is aware and we'll look into it in order to improve. Thank you for your comments in regard to the beach. We are sad that you could not fully enjoy it. I arrived from Canada on the 13th, just as travel advisories were being issued in Canada. My review is a probably not the norm as I feel I didn't stay during normal times and Covid hit halfway through my stay. My review will focus on the management of the crisis that began during my stay.
When I first arrived I found the resort a little confusing, it was difficult locating the buffet and staff didn't seem to know which restaurants were open or when and you have to get a paper schedule from the desk each week. Please work this out.
The beach - If you're looking for beautiful beaches this isn't the place to be. If you're looking to be near town it is the perfect resort for you.
What I do want known is how much I appreciate your staff, every single one of them. They all went above and beyond to ensure my stay was excellent, from conversations with me, to the extra check ins with me to see how I was doing.
I do wish hand cleaner was made more prominent and it did happen around Monday as the call for Canadians to come home was issued. It also started showing up in my bathroom and a fresh bottle was provided to me daily.
Room service made it easy for me to socially distance myself but I also noted seating in the restaurants quickly adapted to the new reality we were in.
Shows were moved outside and seating arrangements accommodated social distancing. I felt terrible for the evening entertainment who kept the shows going even when nobody came anymore. Kinda like the band playing while the Titanic is sinking, but as a guest still waiting to be transported out, it kept me calm and I watched from my balcony as so many others did as well.
Although the Mexican government had done little to protect it's people, it was obvious the Hilton was doing their own thing. The disinfecting ramped up and there was always someone cleaning railings and common areas.
I spoke to several staff, I quiring as to the support they were getting from Hilton, and everyone was aware of Covid and felt supported by Hilton as an employer. That means a lot to me since I would not willingly support unethical treatment if employees.
Everything else was great but unremarkable. What I would expect at a 4plus star resort. The staff is what makes it deserving of the 5th star.

Service was outstanding almost across the board at this property. I think their motto should likely be the answer is always yes because that’s exactly how I felt when I requested something. Every customization we requested was accommodated and delivered eagerly. Minibar was fully stocked with water, soft drinks, and snacks. Room service menu was reasonably comprehensive. Dining options were pretty good for an AI property. Shows were well done and nice casual evening entertainment. Location is hard to beat. The hotel provided disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer in room, and items like remote controls were clearly labeled as having been disinfected. Notwithstanding all of that I cannot give this property more than 4 stars for a few reasons... first constant upsell attempts are annoying. At times instead of a relaxing environment I felt like I was on 5th Ave having to repeatedly say no thank you. The staff was gracious and I understood they were likely being pressured to engage in this behavior but the repetitiveness of this was a big negative. Second the limited availability of chairs around the main pool was a distinct negative. I am not a pool person, as I would much rather spend time on the beach but the beach at this property is in such poor condition and almost non-existent. Last, the quality of drinks both in taste and quality of alcohol was very disappointing.

Just got back from an amazing trip with my Mother down to Playa del Carmen in Mexico! The Hilton is such an amazing place to go if you are looking for a calming safe environment or plenty of activities.
If you are looking to relax by the pool this was the perfect place to go to, or if you are looking to partake in the pool side activities there was plenty of options.
The staff at the Hilton are super friendly and helpful, whether it is serving drinks by the pool or in the restaurants. They go out of their way to make sure you have the best vacation.
The poolside staff including Manuel Diaz and Laura were super friendly and their service was amazing. At Trade Wind Carlos made excellent Piña Coladas and Miami Vices and was very humorous for example "See you in 5 Minutes". Both my Mom and I were laughing as we walked away with our second drink at 11am (its 5 o'clock somewhere right?)
My Mom and I ate at Pelicanos for lunch, the ocean view while eating tacos and chicken burgers could not be beat. My Mom absolutely loved the tacos from Rincon, its been told they are so good you dream about them months after the trip.
The menu at Pelicanos has a variety of seafood and American style food, but I have allergies myself so I stuck with my chicken burger. The staff were very careful and well educated and made sure that my food was safe for me to eat.
Amaya one of the waiters, from our last visit recognized us and remembered we like chips and guac and brought that for us.
The room itself was very clean and ascetically pleasing with a great view of the pool, ocean or both! The cleaning and turn down service, in particularly Margarita Sanchez, took care in making sure our room was clean during the day and into the evening. My favourite was the towel animals :)
Overall this is our favourite destination spot I don't think there is one bad thing to say about the Hilton. Every one of the staff is mention worthy unfortunately my review would be way to long!
10/10 will come back here, hopefully soon :)

Just got home from an 8 day stay at the Hilton. Found the resort to have beautiful, manicured grounds. The service was exceptional. Every employee was happy to serve and we were always greeted with a smile and a hand over the heart. The effort to maintain a Covid-Free environment was extensive and consistent. Every employee wore protective masks and/or face shields. We saw surfaces being thoroughly cleaned constantly. Sanitizer was readily available upon entering every area. Gone is the traditional buffet food service. Now the food is covered behind glass and served to you. My Fiancé and I felt very safe. Special recognition to waitress Alexandra Escobar, who single-handedly made us feel pampered like royalty every afternoon poolside! Be sure and ask for her when you visit! The food was quite delicious, though the best and most tempting menu options did require you to pay an additional fee. Well worth it for those giant lobster tails! The only real issues we had were the lack of a beach and the non-enforcement of the no smoking rules. When I say the beach you see in the videos and pictures isn’t there, it’s no exaggeration. There isn’t enough beach to put a beach chair on! I guess the ocean level has risen to a point that has absorbed the beach almost completely. This was problematic for us as we like to hang almost exclusively on the beach in proximity to the ocean when we travel. This forced us to hang poolside, where the heavy drinkers like to have a cigarette to accompany their beer and tequila. Having to endure the awful smell of smoke was an annoyance. The resort was lucky to have the service of Alexandra, who was determined to make sure we left happy every day. She did such a good job that we are considering returning despite the flaws!

Dear xtracgreat, Thank you very much for your recent visit and for taking the time to share this review. We are glad to hear you had a good stay overall and appreciate all your praises to our team members, food, and facility. Rest assured we'll share your kind words with Alexandra. Also, thank you very much for remarking on the dedication of our team members to maintain a safe environment. It is very rewarding to hear you both felt safe. We regret the impression you got of the beach. Unfortunately, the recent tropical storm Cristóbal affected our coasts, but we are confident the beach will naturally recover the dunes that were washed away. On the other hand, please accept my apologies for the inconvenience related to the smoking policy. Our team is aware of your feedback, and we'll gladly look into it to deliver a pleasant stay for all guests. Thank you again for choosing Hilton Playa del Carmen. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back.

This is our first travel experience during the pandemic and we were very pleased with the COVID safety precautions (“Clean Stay”) @ Hilton Playa del Carmen. Every single employee was wearing a mask and goggles at all times. Everything was clean and regularly sanitized. Hand sanitizer stations throughout and temperatures taken upon arrival anytime you enter the resort. Majority of all guests were also adhering to precautions. It was nice to see people traveling yet it was not crowded so there was lots of social distancing happening.
Our junior suite was a perfect size, very spacious, & although we considered upgrading, we loved our garden view location. The en suite jacuzzi was also nice.
“Life” is basically centered around the pool during the day. The pools are very nice and clean. The pool water was so cold. Unfortunately you have to rent the cabanas with lounge chairs directly poolside but others are available at no charge farther back. There is also a limited beach area at the resort, which is a great option too, with some chairs and cabanas available at no charge.
A big shout out to the entertainment staff at the pool, especially our favorite: Carlos Carlos! He made our stay! They were very personable & made the days fun. Daily water zumba class, trivia, bellyflop contests, and other activities throughout the days.
Mario Cruz (pool server) & Antonio Caruhou (waiter @ Pelicanos) were excellent too. All the staff really goes above and beyond to be sure you are happy and have everything you need.
La Mejorada Cantina had the best mixologists (Ildelfonso & Martha) who would create amazing concoctions based on your preferences. Such a treat!
The food was good. The buffets were assisted service which was great and COVID compliant. Our most favorite meal by far was Mediterranean Night at Spice. Unfortunately Kalamatas restaurant was closed but everything we ordered off that menu was amazing (only available one night during the week). Lorenzo, our server that night, was very attentive.
The only real negative (besides cold pool water) is that they are really lacking in evening entertainment/activities. They have a single musician play each evening for a couple hours but that’s all. Luckily 5th Ave is just a block from the property and is very lively with shop, bars, restaurants, & music if you choose to venture out.
I highly recommend this resort!
