The hotel is situated on a good location and you can walk to most attractions and restaurants. The staffs were great, and most willing to provide assistance. Because it's an old hotel, the room looks run down. The air conditioning was loud, there was some kind of smell I do not like and the room didn't look like it's clean.

Dear Mr. William First of all thanks for having selected our property. We are glad to read that you enjoyed the hotel's location and the staff's service however it's a shame you've found your room smelly and unclean. We guarantee you that our housekeeping department works very hard to maintain all the facilities impeccable but we would still love to...

We spent one night at this hotel on a tour of Mexico, it was on a main road with a fair amount of traffic but inside it was a tranquil oasis. The location was great because it was a short walk into the old town close to shops and restaurants. The lift in the hotel to a little getting use...

I stayed at the Hotel Casa del Balam in early March 2015 for a 1-night stay, for a flying visit to Merida after a morning tour of the Chichén Itzá archaeological (enroute to the pretty archaeological site of Uxmal the next day) on the second stage of my 18-day 'Mysteries of the Maya' holiday operated by Voyages Jules Verne. For...

Dear Mr. Williams Good afternoon and thanks for taking the time to write a very useful descriptive review from our hotel and the nearby areas. We are saddened about the awkward experience you had outside the convenience store so we investigated and there were no reports of stabbings here. We believe that you witnessed an ugly fight between these guys....

First things first: the staff is super nice, always helpful, they deal with a number of languages each day and do a good job of it! I stayed here for six nights, and by the final day everyone knew me by my name. I always felt 110% safe and secure here, and I knew that my belongings were safe as...

Dear Mr. Scott Many thanks for your review and your advice, they're very much appreciated. We agree with the fact of having a great solicitous team and a privileged location... there's so much going on in downtown and most of the activities are for free!! Regarding the internet issue we want you to know that we're permanently working on it....

Lovely style hotel with pretty courtyard. Excellent central location to visit the sites in downtown Merida. Rooms were very clean and comfortable. Good, quiet night's sleep, despite having a room overlooking the road. Staff were very friendly and spoke good English. Plenty of good, tasty food at breakfast. Would have been more than happy to stay more than one night...

Hello Jeremy First of all good afternoon and sorry for the delay. We very much appreciate your feedback and point of view. It's been very difficult to fulfill the mission of protecting the escence of a historic mansion and its legacy and the demands that these modern days require. Most people ignore that the hotel's been renovated (hence our eclectic...

Great hotel, full of history and has a lovely ambience. The courtyard is a lovely place to sit and have drink. Our room was spacious and well furnished. The hotel is well located near to the centre of the town, shops, bars and restaurants.

Only an overnight stay unfortunately, but lovely room with wifi, comfortable bed and great little courtyard for evening drinks. We chose to dine downtown. Breakfast was a small buffet with limited choice but perfectly acceptable and very tasty. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Casa del Balam is one of the oldest and most distinguished hotels in Merida and the Yucatan Peninsula, it's also one of the few original Mexican Art Deco houses left in the city. The hotel was built in 1970 incorporating facets of the original home of Fernando Barbachano Peon, pioneer of Tourism in Mexico. His daughter, Ms. Carmen Barbachano Gomez Rul (who was also involved on the family business), left the original facade and selected the name of "Casa del Balam" (Mayan words for "house of the jaguar") to honor his father nickname "balam" due to his visionary sharp business mind. Ms. Barbachano was very devoted of the colonial period and decorated the house accordingly. Big wooden furniture, rocking chairs and wrought iron accessories were part of her fine selection. She had envisioned a place where every touch could softly spoke of the serene ambiance of the city, and where friends could be made instead of just mere clients. When looking at the amazing interior of this Casona and experiencing the warm specialized service of its personnel, one can easily understand that Ms. Barbachano did accomplish her desire of uniqueness, and in a very exquisite way! ... more   less
