The only good thing about this hotel is the genuinely kind and helpful people who work at the reception desk, Maria, Luis, and Jorge. They were all so helpful and always had a smileto share! NaBalam is fortunate to have such dedicated and sincere employees. On the other hand, the hotel itself is not as it is portrayed on the website! it is NOT on the beach, It is not a "Boutique" Hotel and the "Spa" is a man and woman who offer massages in a hut. Those in our group who did get a massage while there did say it was fantastic though!
The building is old, run down and not well taken care of. It definitely could use some TLC to repair the leaky palapa style roofs, the broken old locks on the doors, the peeling paint, the wobbly walkways etc...
The woman who cleaned the rooms each day did do a nice job and the sheets and bedding were actually very nice and the men who took care of the pool and the gardens did an excellent job as well.
The employees were all doing their absolute best with what they had to work with with but the management of this hotel should definitely invest some money in refurbishing the place.
Oh, and the part about having a nice sun bed at the Oceanvs Beach Club on the website is also not true - the ones you will be allowed to use are not the beautiful ones pictured but broken old ones around the bend on the public end of the beach.I brought a group of 11 people to this hotel for a yoga retreat, specifically because the hotel has a yoga studio, but there were issues about actually using it, unfortunately.

We stayed at Na Balam last week and I have to say I was disappointed. At ~$270 all in per night I was expecting a lot more.

The hotel has a fantastic location within a few yards of Playa Norte and a good snorkeling area for kids but that is where the value ends.

The hotel is not a boutique hotel or spa. I would call it an inn or similar. There were a lot of small issues that made it feel mediocre. It has very basic (but clean) rooms. The decor is spartan and leaves a lot to be desired. The mirrors were showing signs of a lot of wear, with unfinished paint on the edges, for example. There were hardly any towel hooks - and one of ours was loose. Several lights did not work. The door room key was hard to operate and also felt very cheap.

The staff members were nice but not abundant or overly helpful. I had to ask the staff three times for extra towels and a pillow before someone gave it to me.

The pool is nice and shaded but the hot tub was not regularly hot and the lounge chairs had bird poop on them.

The breakfast was frustrating as well. You walk across the street to Jaguar Hotel for breakfast but only certain menu items are included if you are in Na Balam which felt so awkward and cheap. If you want anything other than a standard coffee you have to pay extra. It only comes to a dollar or two more which feels so cheap for the $270/night price tag. You are also charged extra for water at the hotel to refill your water bottle!

If the hotel was less expensive, this would be a 5 star review. But for the price, I would look elsewhere.

Our downstairs room was very nice. Clean. All bathroom facilities worked nicely. However there was no coffee pot. There was no hot water for tea in the morning. No iron. The lobby did not offer any of that either. While the staff was certainly professional and helpful, they had no resources to offer their guests anything other than just the room key and to answer questions.

The drapes for the glass door into our room did not allow entry into the room easily. We were constantly fighting with the curtains just to get in and out of our door. On the other hand, the pool and gardens were very nice. Easy walk to the beach. Access to the restaurant and other facilities across the street was nice.

We came here for a friend’s birthday. They stayed at a more expensive hotel that was all booked up, so we were just “accidentally” at Na Balam. What a glorious accident! Management communicated with us before check-in, which was simple and flawless. We were provided bottled water in an artistic carafe, freshened up daily. Room was clean and simple. I read a review earlier about the room smelling good, and it’s true!! I got home, and all my clothes still smelled like the room. Amazing! The pool is tranquil and the perfect size. Of course, the beach...calm Playa Norte is the most picturesque ever! If you want more of a party vibe, walk a couple of steps across the street to The Lotus and enjoy their beach club too.
We’re going back in June. Can’t wait to stay at Na Balam again!

I spent a long time looking for a hotel:

In Playa Norte
With A/C
Small(not a resort)
On the Beach
With restaurant on site

In spite of some of the negative reviews, took a chance on this hotel and it paid off; it was wonderful. Just as it looks on the pictures.
We stayed in a deluxe room with a king bed on a second floor with a partial view of the beach: gorgeous!

I wasn’t counting on a TV and mini fridge in the room. Nice surprise!
WiFi is slows but works in the room, restaurant and even at the beach; just be patience.
An umbrella, table and two-person bed beach are available at no extra fee; a cabana is available at a discounted fee if you are a hotel guest.

The hotel is near a bar and a resort and it can get loud at night. Not a problem for us since we got all our other requests and they shut down early enough.

I wish the room had a coffee machine and a full body mirror. Just being picky here.

Guillermina, at the front desk, and Gaspar at the restaurant were super nice and helpful.

We are going back to this hotel.

We didn't know what to expect at Na Balam but were pleasantly surprised. Rooms were very clean and basic but more than enough for what we needed. Pool area is nice though very shady and reminded us of Bali. Our 5 yr old loved the pool. The hotel is very quiet with only 12 or so rooms so is a little oasis. The daily yoga classes (small cost) were great and Lal was an amazing instructor, especially to our 5 year old! Only downside was how busy the beach was. We were there just before Easter and Playa Norte was crazy, very difficult to relax and not how I remembered Isla from 10 years before! May have been time of year, may just be how it is these days. Not the hotel's fault at all though. Business was the same throughout the north end of the island.

I want to give a shout out to this hotel for their customer service during the COVID pandemic! I booked through a third party under a no change /no cancellation booking. My travel date needed to be changed so I decided to try with no real expectation. Well, I am thrilled to report that they let me change my date! Im so impressed with their generosity and superb customer service! Thank you Na Balam! I absolutely love this hotel. This hotel is a gem! It is a beautiful boutique hotel with an awesome pool and the rooms are super cute too. The location is also perfect- just a couple blocks from the main square. You also have access to lounge beds right on Playa Norte with drinks and there is also a restaurang. All part of the hotel! Jorge at the front desk is the best and super helpful! Highly recommend this hotel and can’t wait to go back!

Great view! Terrible service. Couldn’t get a drink to save my life. Claims you get a reserved bed with room on beach - lies! Toilet was broken the entire time. TV didn’t work off and on (yes, I know we’re in Mexico and who watches TV but I like too when going to bed at night). Disappointed!
