I highly recommend Hotel Maela! I stayed there for Dia de Muertos in '07, and both my friend and I had a great time there. If you book in advance you can stay for $35-$40 USD/night; if you get there during the holiday without a reservation (provided there are rooms available) it will be around $70/night. The restaurant was closed...

I really liked this small hotel. It was a short walk to the Zocolo, and surrounded by cute little shops & cafes and a beautiful church. The staff was very helpful and friendly. We never took a taxi once...we walked everywhere, and again, just a few blocks from the Zocolo.

The Hotel Maela is on a quiet, shady street just a bock from the Church of Santo Domingo and about a fifteen minute walk from the bus station in one direction and the Zocalo in the other. Our room was rather small, especially since it had three beds, but very clean. The beds were wonderfully firm (if you like softer...

According to the website and reviews, this seemed a very likeable place to stay over in. The reception area is smart, but the room, though spacious, did not give the impression of being very clean. The towels have been through many a wash, greyish and thin. The fountain at the entrance and in anorther courtyard were out of order and...

“Ask for a large room with two bedside tables. You don't need to take a room with the bed against the wall.”

“If you want a big room, try the top floor. We had a huge room with two large beds, a kitchen area, and a balcony area with a lovely view of parts of Oaxaca. It was plain but comfortable. I don't recommend it for people who can't walk much because there are stairs to climb, though.”

“Oaxa it´s pretty warm during the summer and if you can´t stand 25-30 degress C, ask for a room with A/C.”

“In Mexico, room sizes in many if not most hotels, can vary even significantly. Always ask to see your room so you know what you're getting. Also, the Maela has a price listing for "economical rooms"; that may be for the smaller rooms & possibly even those without outside windows.”
