We spent a couple of days in one of the garden rooms with our two lurchers, visiting family for socially distanced walks on the beaches of Southwold, Aldeburgh and Thorpeness. Superbly thoughtful but at the same time, high quality accommodation for dog-owners, plus friendly, helpful staff. Food divine. The whole stay was an absolute treat.
Shocking. Months ago I booked dinner and overnight for my wife's birthday celebration. They rang and cancelled 4 days before the event because they had decided to close. They didn't apologise at all, in fact, they made a big deal of not charging me for their cancellation in the email that followed 30 seconds after their call. Won't be going again and suggest others don't
We spent two nights at the Crown & Castle, exploring the East Suffolk coast from this convenient location. Orford itself is beautiful and there is an easy 2 hour walk from the hotel front door. We were lucky enough to be allocated Room 1, looking out to the sea and Orford Ness. It has a bay window from which we saw a spectacular sunset. The bathroom has a bath and a separate shower, just perfect for us. Covid-19 meant no servicing of the room, but extra towels, bath foam etc were freely available. We had a really comfortable two nights in Room 1. The Crown & Castle promotes itself as a restaurant with rooms rather than a hotel and the food at dinner and breakfast did not disappoint. The team responded really well to dietary allergens too. For dinner on our first night we were offered seats in an area of the restaurant where there were three other tables in use (all complying with social distancing). it turned out that the occupants of these three tables all knew each other and over the course of the meal they got louder and louder conversing with each other as if they were all on the same table. It was getting uncomfortable for us and was beginning to dominate our experience. Perhaps I should have said something to the waiter, but in actual fact when he came to offer us dessert, he suggested that maybe we would like to take dessert and coffee in the bar area where we might be more 'comfortable'. This was a great suggestion from the waiter (Maciej), who then once we were away from the table told us that he had noticed what was going on and felt for us, which is why he made the suggestion. He also said that the dessert (we had the cheeseboard which was very tasty, full of local cheeses) was on the house as a small way to compensate for what was clearly not a great experience for us. Full marks to Maciej for both his empathy to us and also his ability to do something about the situation. If only more front line staff in hotels and restaurants were as perceptive and empowered to act as he was. All in all this is a great place to come and recharge batteries. No wonder that it featured in a Top 25 list of 'cosy hotels for winter' in the press this weekend. Would definitely recommend!…
We had previously visited The C&C in 2012 and it has since remained in our minds as the hotel to beat over the years. We decided to treat ourselves to a return trip just before lockdown, and were so disappointed. The personal touch that had made our previously stay so perfect was sadly lacking and the hotel felt very generic. We have been recommending people to stay here for years, but will regrettably not be doing so any longer. Worth mentioning that our complaints are nothing to do with the necessary adjustments made to the service option due to COVID restrictions.
Ideal location. Just enjoy being in Orford. Walks galore, dogs love romping around Castle mounds. Easy trips to Aldbrough, Snape and Woodbridge. Crown & Castle comfortble, peaceful and friendly. Garden rooms are excellent. Restaurant menu good. Atmosphere relaxed yet efficient.
