We had only time to stay for a 2-night stay, but will come back. The countryside is interesting and beautiful. The peaceful location is off the main road and with little distraction in the evenings close by. The owner family is supportive in any way and the tips provided helpful and off the tourist books. The tour of their premises with all the animal at various stages provides lots of insight. The Casa Rural we were in, was equipped with everything needed, clean and comfortable. Quiet at night with millions of stars at the clear sky. We were twice at Bar Camacho at El Repilado, which seems to be the place to eat out. Consider driving a bit further for dinner, if eating at the same location often is not your thing. We enjoyed our stay and have nothing negative to state.

I have visited Finca Montefrio 3 times now on successive visits to the Sierra de Aracena with Nordic Walking Fit Dorset. Each time we have visited for the day to learn about their organic Iberico pig farm. They also have a range of other free range animals - goats, chickens, geese etc. As part of the visit we are given lunch using their organic produce. They cater for vegetarians and vegans too and the food and wine is marvellous. It really is an amazing, special place, having been in the family for several generations. I believe they can also sometimes provide accommodation.

I can only echo the review by Paul, from about this same time last year. This is an experience not to be missed. The amazing Iberian pigs live a life of luxury in beautiful surroundings; free range has new meaning for us! We were taken round by Helene, the daughter of the household, and her conviction of the "rightness" of what they are doing made the experience unforgettable. Be aware: nothing that comes to your mind when you here "organic pig farm" can begin to express what happens here. The land itself is beautiful and we got an amazing insight into the interaction of factors in this way of using the land while respecting its history and health. We saw everything from piglets under a week old through to the air-dried hams aging in the rafters of the cooling room. A brilliant day out which we only went to because of a personal recommendation - such a happy accident. We did not stay, but they have rural rooms to rent.

This was the best day out in our recent trip to Seville, where we spent four weeks in March. The car ride from Seville took about an hour and a half, and the Finca Montefrio estate was quite easy to find. We were not really prepared for the sights which greeted us before we reached the house - Cerdo Iberico Puro (pure race Iberian) pigs were wandering around freely and grazing under the beautiful holm and cork oak trees. The raw ham that is made from these pigs is called Bellota ham, because the pigs feed on the acorns (bellota) which fall, naturally enough, from the oak trees. We were met by Loli and Armando and their daughter Helena. Helena took us on a tour of the estate, showing us the hog, the sows and their litters - from the very tiniest piglets to young pigs enjoying themselves in the mud! We returned to the house for a lunch prepared by Loli and Armando, which consisted of samples of their succulent raw ham (delicious) followed by a piece of pork leg prepared by Armando on their barbeque. Without doubt, this barbequed meat was the most exquisite piece of meat that I have ever eaten. A most memorable day.

Armando and Lola, the owners raise Iberian pigs on their organic, self-sustaining farm. Their accommodations are lovely. Neat, clean, great food. Walk through the fields with Armando while he visits with the goats, free-range, acorn eating pigs, horses and sheep. Be as active or non-active as you like. Take a trip into one of the many villages, including Arcena (the closest and biggest village). We ate tapas for lunch and dinner at a variety of wonderful local places. On our last of five days, Armando and Lola hosted a BBQ for us, brought in a couple to make bread in the outdoor hearth. If you want to really see southern Spain and enjoy the people, ride a horse, drink some wine then this is the right vacation for you. About 1 1/2 hrs. by car out of Seville.
