Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Wonderful that's what I say ! Our king bed sooo comfy , private bathroom , shared giant kitchen that has absolutely everything ! Our room was on the second floor and if you feel like getting out of your room there is a lovely shared balcony . Nice quiet area within walking distance for food or drink . We were picked up at the airport which is only a ten minute drive to Major Rod's . Great value $80 . Brenda M

While I cannot comment on the place itself, I just felt this is worth sharing with other travelers as a general warning: I was planning to stay here for a couple of days. Upon landing on the Grand Cayman, you must provide your intended accommodation on your immigration form. That got me into trouble: I was told by the officer at passport control that "the place is condemned" and that they might have to make me book another hotel on the spot before they can let me in. After some back and forth and me reassuring I would stay somewhere else, they finally let me in, but it has apparently happened that they made people book another place on the spot.

Stayed here 1-16 through 1-20-16 with a friend. This was my third time at the property, but first in a private room. Note: the dorm is currently not in service as it is being converted to another private quarters. Management indicated plans for a new dorm, but no word on when. Anyway the private room was clean, bed comfortable, and ac worked well. $80/night is what we paid. Shared bathroom. Pretty bare bones, but all that is needed. If you aren't picky, you can't beat the price and location. Deducted one star due to communication issues with setting up the reservation. I would stay here again.

Staying 6 nights here, 5 minute walk to bus station, which will take you all over the island for $3.50,plenty of food, bars restaurants right across the street, beach less than a minute away. Unbelievable value in a VERY expensive country. Daniel is the best, he'll get you whatever you need.

I enjoyed my first stay in January so much that I decided to return over the 4th of July weekend. I stayed in the dorm. It must be understood that the accommodations are quite spartan. However they were clean and the ac works well at night (it struggles to keep up with the daytime heat). My only minor inconvenience was that there was a radio left on all night in the adjoining private room. Fortunately the volume was minimal, so it wasn't a real disruption to my sleep. Staff is very friendly, and you can't beat $30/night on this island. Location is convenient to world class snorkeling and diving (Eden rock site is a short walk and swim from shore), in addition to bars, restaurants, and a grocery. Jitney buses for 2.50-3.00 will take you up and down 7 mile beach in a safe reliable manner. Check http://thebusschedule.com/EN/ky/#.VZx1gPnD_qA for the full bus schedule and route map. Grand Cayman has immense natural beauty, and this place makes it possible to appreciate it without breaking the bank.

First of all I might mention that EVERYTHING on this island is expensive. So this room for $78 was comparable to rooms I have stayed in in Mexico, Central America and Southeast Asia that I've paid $10-15 for. That being said I found Major Rod's just fine. It is a hostel and not a 7 Mile Beach condo. My room was clean, comfortable and minimal. I was concerned about the small a/c unit in the window but it cooled the room just fine and it was sweltering at the time I stayed there. It's in a great location with lots of restaurants nearby. The south end of the beach is a comfortable walk away, probably no more than a mile away. I noticed one reviewer didn't like the roosters. If you're going to stay in this type of place on the island you're going to hear roosters. No getting away from that. However I'm a lough sleeper and didn't start hearing them until 7am when i was ready to get up anyway. For what it is and what it isn't Major Rod's is not a bad place to stay.

Stayed over MLK weekend in January, 2015. Just wanted a cheap, clean, safe place to sleep in between soaking up Grand Cayman's exquisite beauty. I got all that and more. Location is super convenient to 7 mile beach, town, and some world class snorkel sites. Loved waking up and just walking to snorkel Eden Rock. Staff is very friendly. I was able to save money by walking here from the airport. Just a couple miles, all flat and safe. I stayed in the shared dorm, and it suited me well. Air-con worked well. I look forward to returning. As a single male traveler looking for an inexpensive place to flop on an otherwise pricey island, I found this place to be a home run. Tip: use the local jitney "buses" (vans) to get around. Its around $2.50-3.00 each way, and they are friendly and frequent up and down 7 mile beach. If you want to explore the more remote reaches of the island, the main bus hub is a short walk from this place, and these little vans can take you most anywhere on the island. There are few marked stops. Just waive em down.

When I booked this hostel I was trying to keep costs down as I was on my way to volunteer in Honduras. The reviews were decent, and I was looking forward to it. When I arrived at the airport, I put Major Rod's on my immigration forms. They stopped me and told me that I could not stay at Major Rod's because it was uninhabitable. I took a cab to another hotel that would be much much more expensive, where they called Major Rod's. They said that it was habitable, and that they would come and get me from the hotel. On the way to Honduras I stayed in a private room (probably the nicest one), and on the way back stayed in the dorm. Both were as to be expected. However, both times I was woken up by a rooster at 5 AM continuously cawing. The bathrooms also smelled pretty weird. Since I had issues getting there, the owner took me to and picked me up from the airport both ways. Overall, if you can afford nicer accommodation, this is not the place for you. Only stay if, like me, you need to keep costs down. But make sure you have cash--she doesn't take credit card.

Room Tip: Room number 5 was fine, and the dorm was one of the nicer areas.

I'll start on a positive, the owner and lady who work at the hostel are lovely but unfortunately that is the only positive for our stay. Firstly, we were shown to our room our door didn't close let alone lock. The owner seemed to feel it was fine. The bed was not a bed, a futon with a sheet thrown on top. Very uncomfortable even for two relatively short people (both under 5'8). The shower, communal areas and just general condition of the building are awful! I cannot warn people away enough. Luckily we were only there for one night!

I had booked 4 nights in the studio apartment at Major Rod's Hostel for January. I booked through Airbnb about 2 months in advance. I have travelled a lot and stayed in many dorms, hostels and budget hotels so I was not expecting luxury, just somewhere simple, basic and clean. The studio apartment was a HUGE disappointment. I honestly can't believe they are asking $100 a night. The room was filthy, the shower filled with hair and the toilet stained. Spider webs everywhere and a stained mattress perched on a futon the size of a single bed, so if you didn't sit directly in the middle of the bed you would fall to the ground. We came back in the evening to find the lock ripped off the door. They were trying to fix it, but it was already 10pm, but we didn't feel safe or even close to comfortable so we left and found another place to stay for our trip. The hostel itself is in a good location, and maybe the dorms and other rooms are in much better condition, and would be a cheaper place to stay on the island. However I would NOT recommend paying 100 dollars a night for the "studio apartment". I wouldn't have stayed there for free. I have added some pictures to back up my claims. I am doing this not out of spite, but just so other travellers do not end up in the same position as we did.
