I don't write reviews very often, but I thought it was worth writing something here about how dead on this hostel is. Somethow they've managed to create really nice social vibes here, which counts for a lot. It's also downtown, which is geographically close but a world away from the cruise ship part of town. Finally, this is an amazing old building, loads of wood and detailing, there's genuinely good art on the walls, the place has clearly been recently renovated, and its clean. So stay here!
Thank you for 5* hospitality. I had Amazing few stays in Downtown of Montego Ba. Very friendly and helpful owner Vanessa, don’t be afraid to ask her recommendations or suggestions about your journey in Jamaica. Rooms a big, sparkling clean, bright. Highly recommend!
Mobay Kotch was the perfect base from which to explore Montego Bay and the surrounding area. The impressive "Town House" and courtyard were an oasis of calm in the heart of the city bustle, and the host Vanessa was welcoming and really helpful. I was able to walk and/or catch the cheap route taxis everywhere, checking out something new every day. Highly recommend if you're looking for something more than lounging in a beachfront resort all week!
Had to cancel my November 20 trip and this was one of the hostels I had booked with. I was expecting the same issues and problems I had as when dealing with the airline but I was surprised and astonished at the courteousness and welcome I received when I was telling them the bad news. I knew this was their livelihood but there was no indignation and more concern for my well being. I will definitely be rebooking this trip and this is one of the first places I will be returning to. See you in early 2022.
This is a very small hidden gem located just a block away from the city center, or "downtown" area where all the shops are located. It doesn't look like much from the outside but once you are brought into the gate (which is quite a challenge during the late hours since it is always locked) and taken around the building to the entrance, you'll be surprised at how nice, clean, and spacious this place is. The WiFi is spotty at best in the rooms but works fine outside in the seating area. They sometimes have problems with their credit card machines, so having cash is always a plus. The rooms are clean and beds quite comfortable. Minimal supplies in the bathroom, and BYOT (Bring Your Own Towel) but you get what you pay for - the prices are very reasonable for the country and the location. I DEFINITELY recommend this place to anybody that is looking for a comfortable and economical place to stay overnight in the Montego Bay area.…
My adult daughter and I had a triple room to ourselves. The place was cozy and comfortable. Loved the sense of community created by having everyone use the WiFi in the courtyard. Met some lovely people. The owner was very helpful. She pointed out places of interest and provided invaluable tips. The House is a magnificent old place. Loved the feel and look of it. Bathrooms and kitchen were clean. Beds were comfortable and clean. The place was close to a mini Mart, taxis, cultural center, craft market and the beach. We walked to the hip strip at night and did not feel unsafe at all. The people were generally friendly and willing to help if you needed directions. Discovered and tried many interesting foods and fruits while we stayed there. Would recommend this guest house any time.
I had a room to myself (double/triple room) so I can’t speak for the dorm accommodation, but my double bed was comfortable. The room would have been cramped with one other person, let alone two, though. There’s no AC, only a ceiling fan, so it can get very hot - this is the tropics after all. I know other reviewers have said it was clean but I think the dark-stained floorboards can hide a multitude of sins. When I wiped up some spilled water in my room, the paper towel came away black and grungy. The bathrooms were reasonably clean - no hair in the plug holes - and the kitchen was run down but also reasonably clean, though the kitten and dog roamed freely throughout, which might not be some people’s idea of hygiene. The wifi only worked in the back courtyard, but this was also the only smoking area. So if you need to use the wifi, be prepared to get a good ole lungful of smoke, Bob Marley style. Clearly, most of my fellow travelers and the hosts were committed marijuana smokers, and that’s fine, but I felt like I couldn’t get away from it. This place is in a run-down area and you might not feel safe on the streets at night. I was grateful that I could buy food at the supermarket over the road and cook dinner in the kitchen for this reason. During the day I was happy to roam around on my own (I’m a middle aged white woman) but I swam at the private beach rather than the free public beach since I didn’t have anyone to mind my stuff. Crime and murder rates are very high in Jamaica, but this neighbourhood didn’t feel any more threatening than similar places I’ve been (Manila, Maputo, Mexico, Washington DC, Bangkok etc), but as in those places, I wouldn’t go out on my own after dark.…
Close to the airport, shuttle available ($). Clean with comfortable beds, adequate shower/toilet facilities (cold water). Good location close to downtown. Kitchen available. Close to Pier 1 bus terminal for Knutsford Express (10 min walk).
First of all, let me tell about my first impressions which I encountered in Jamaica. Landing early night I booked a place in a hostel which would not drown my wallet and be pretty close to the airport (ca. 3.5 km). It happened to be a place neighbouring to a music club and even noise stoppers in my ears did not help until 3 a.m :( So coming back to Montego Bay in my way back was a bit of hassle in the choice of choosing a right place to stay (my flight back was in the morning hours, so wanted to be at the spot a bit ahead). And that was a best shot! Recommended by a friend met in Port Antonio, it changed my thoughts about Montego Bay by 180 degrees. It's a really great place to stay, with such friendly staff (you may almost feel like at home), really great location and just to make you a bit confused, a crazy cat & dog. If it ever happens I will visit Jamaica and Montego Bay, i will definitely visit Mobay Kotch once again!…
Very convenient location, friendly staff and clean rooms, kitchen and bathrooms. There is a nice little court yard where you can chill and take a break from the hustle and bustle of Montego Bay. They have a big dog and a cat, both friendly 😊 Great standard for a hostel!
