Thank you to the staff at Villa Carolina. Francia is one of the most delicate, mild-mannered and sweetest hosts that I have ever had the pleasure of staying with. It truly feels like your home away from home. Set back from the street, the Villa is so quiet in the evenings. I was able to catch up on my reading and I enjoyed the sole sounds of the birds in the afternoons and mornings. The breakfast, prepared by the lovely Lisandra, is delicious and filling, even by my own standards as a larger woman who likes to eat (😊). Rm 6 (w/fan and AC) was perfect for me and my 6 yr old grandson, it even had a small daybed included. Exploring during the day, pool time late afternoons, we didn’t even miss not having a TV in room. A 15-20 min walk in either direction will bring you to either the seafront with plenty of eateries or the Ruta 5 (opp direction of seafront) where you can catch a gua-gua to points along the North Coast. ($100 RD from Pto Plata to Cabarete with light bag…left direction to Sosua/Cabarete and right direction to Cofresi/Maimon) I encourage you to stay here a couple of nights to get a feel for the city before settling down at one of the more popular north coast resorts (We stayed at Viva Wyndham Tangerine directly located on Ruta 5 headed toward Rio San Juan) -Katrina

Best host ever. Francia is so helpful and taking care about their guests. Great breakfast. Perfect location. 700m to the center and to the beach. Swimming pool very relaxing. Beatiful garden around so place is vey quite. Close to medical center, shops, drug store.. You can take a motor bike for 50 - 100 pesos to get to far beach.

We only stayed here for one night before getting our boat out to the Silver Banks but wished we had stayed after our trip instead of staying in a big all inclusive hotel. The staff were amazingly helpful and friendly and went out of their way to help us. The facilities were clean and breakfast was good. The garden was lovely for sitting around and relaxing. Good location for exploring the area.

We spent 2 nights here and had a fantastic time. Francia is helpful, nice, chatty and her breakfast - especially the fruit platter! - , while simple, is something to remember for a lifetime. Our room was spacious, quite and comfy, and the house is at walking distance from the main square, the guagua station and the Caribetours station.

Lovely place to stay. A little haven in the middle of Puerto plata. The hosts are lovely and genuinely want you to have the best time possible and are amazingly helpful. The rooms are clean and the fans work well (no ac). It not new but it's an old colonial villa. A really relaxed pretty place to stay for a few nights. There's a kitchen that's available to use and is clean. The wifi is free and good.

I stayed at Villa Carolina with a group of volunteers who were in the country doing service work. The family that owns Villa Carolina were kind, helpful, and responsive to all of our needs. The place is clean and a very lovely, with a kitchen and fridge if you need it. The group felt at home with wi-fi, private bathrooms and were spoiled by the swimming pool. Our package included breakfast and dinner, and the sisters that provide the cooking give you a delicious Dominican cuisine experience. Pro tip #1: They focus on renting the place out to large groups, so you can't just randomly show up. Contact them ahead of time to see if there is space or if they are even open. Pro tip #2: If you're looking for a place for your group, talk to them about the meal options as they really make the organization of meals easy on you! Pro Tip #3: If you want an excursion with a local who will not gouge you, talk to Julian who is the brother of Francie, the owner of the home. He hooked us up with an AWESOME package deal including waterfalls, beaches and manatee viewing! We loved VC and we'll be back!

At first glance I wasn't sure but I did fall in love with this affordable and very hospitable little jewel. Francia took excellent care of us and we loved visiting with the dogs, listening to the birds and enjoying a couple of Presidentes after our arrival. Francia referred us to a great italian restaurant downtown, il Giardino. We had excellent food and watched the scooters whiz by well into the evening, w/ no lights and 3-4 to a scooter, it was quite crazy to see. After a nights sleep on a pretty hard bed (my only complaint) we enjoyed breakfast provided in the main room, toast, fruit, juice and coffee. Francia gave us directions and we walked downtown to the Amber museum. We met Jose Rafael Batista who guided us the rest of our day. We went to the fort and to lunch on the Malaecon. Would stay here again but really really hope they upgrade the mattresses :-)

Villa Carolina (pronounced Caro-leena) is a villa in the classic style and kept meticulously. It is also a bargain price. There are several complimentary reviews here and I agree with all of them. The natural ventilation of the villa is designed so that air conditioning is not required in the tourist season. The temperature is perfect at night for sleeping. If you are interested in the culture, the people, and the many attractions of the Dominican Republic, Villa Carolina at Puerto Plata is for you. Villa Carolina is capable of easily handling 15 to 20 guests. The “management” of Villa Carolina is a mother, father, three grown children, and one granddaughter whom I have named ‘The Little Princess’ after the children’s book ‘The Little Prince’ by Antoine de Saint- Exupery. Villa Carolina was named after their eldest daughter, Carolina, who is now a lawyer in Puerto Plata and the mother of ‘The Little Princess’. I visited Villa Carolina recently enroute to a family reunion in St. Martin and visited again on my return. Photos attached. Michael Hogan, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

I stayed for a quick night (arrived late around 8pm and left at 2pm) because I went to the 27 charcos de damajagua. Francia was very welcoming! I would definetly return when I go again to Puerto Plata.

The hostel is less like a the kind of hostel you might be thinking of. It's more like a B&B with private rooms that have ensuite bathrooms. Also, the family live in the home across the pool and courtyard and upstairs from the hostel rooms. We felt like we were visiting family rather than booking budget accommodations. Julio is the perfect guide and knows the best places to take you. You're missing part of the experience if you don't take advantage of Julio's tours. The entire family was generous and kind and we kiss them already.
