Casa was placed in a nice place. It was really close to the Capitol, Havana Vieja and Havana Centro. The location allowed us to go through the streets that normally aren't so often visited by tourists. Thanks to it we could see how normal Cubans live. Casa was also close to the market with Internet. Miguel was a nice host. He spoke a bit of english and we managed to talk a lot (we spoke some spanish). He organized for us casas in Vinales and Trinidad. He is very helpful and friendly. Mary and Miguel have also a charming Cafe Arcangel where you can buy a good coffee and tasty breakfasts.

Thanks Klaudia, You perfectly described the value of Casa Mary y Miguel's location. We are close enough to all the main attractions, while still being part of a real Havana neighborhood. You can walk to Havana Vieja, but you don't have to live surrounded by only tourists. Our locations is both vibrant and safe. As for Miguel, he has been "organizing" plans for visitors for many years, he has good contacts all over Cuba and is a great resource person for the Casa as Mary also performs the same value to our Cafe Arcangel.

Against better judgement I ignored the recent reviews and booked for a week. I would have to ring the bell to be let in every time (sometimes waiting over 30 mins). Everyday I felt less and less welcome. Then on the second to last day I politely asked if they would send a PayPal invoice so that I could go to the wifi park and pay it or if I should just send it to an email address. Their website states they accept PayPal and this played a factor in deciding to book this casa. That really set Mary off because she was expecting me to pay cash and she went on an epic rant. I remained polite but she just continued to rant. She eventually got her son on the phone and he was very polite, he gave me an email address he said belongs to his business partner to send the money to. I told him I would send it friends & family to save them the fees. As I was heading to the wifi park Mary came after me to rant once more. She demanded I pay $100 USD per $85 CUC (Government rate was $87). In her rant she also "bragged" that she was a citizen of Spain and has traveled the world. That in itself would have been enough of a reason for me to book elsewhere as I was looking to book a casa particular to benefit a Cuban citizen. I remained polite, respectful, and non-argumentative throughout the interaction but she went on to tell me that I was privileged but that she had privileges as well and threatened that she could report me to immigration for nonpayment so that I wouldn't be able to get on my flight. I simply reminded her that I did not intend to leave without paying and that the website states they accept PayPal. I went to the park immediately afterward and sent the money regular commerce. I couldn't take the risk of sending it as a friends & family "gift" after she had threatened my freedom to return home. The next day Miguel yelled at the taxi driver who was helping me with my bags and blocked him from going near the room I was staying in. He stated it was his home and that he had not invited him in. Mind you, this was in the morning during business hours when the cafe seats customers just a few feet away from the room I was in. I have never written a bad review and often tolerate a lot but I could not with good conscience go without warning anyone who is considering this casa.

Nancy, I'm sorry there was confusion about the Paypal account. With the new U.S. regulations, Paypal payments CANNOT be made inside Cuba, they can only be made in advance, outside of Cuba. I know that doesn't make any sense, but that's the U.S. law. If Paypal is accessed inside Cuba, the account is frozen. We have successfully used Paypal at the time of booking when the visitor is outside of Cuba. I will provide that clarification in future bookings.

With deep regret, I must withdraw the previous favorable recommendation given in my Cuba guidebook, "4 Americans in Cuba." The charismatic and efficient Mary is devoting all of her time to the justifiably popular Archangel Cafe. The casa suffers. We chose the "garden room" because it is the quietest. The room is small, but the high ceiling helps. The windowless room is dark, made worse by missing light bulbs. The mold, see picture, gives the room a dirty look and an off putting smell. The toilet does not have enough pressure to expel excretions. Turning lemonade into lemons, the presence of an excellent cafe is actually a disadvantage. Breakfast is a treat when you stay in a casa particulare. You wake up and there is a place setting ready, and soon coffee juice and fruit appear. You are asked how you want your eggs. You have a chance to chat with your host and get needed information. Not so here. You wake up and wait in line for a table. Your hosts are busy with the cafe and unable to offer information. I adore Mary and Miguel, but the casa is floundering. The location is excellent, near restaurants, the Casa de la Musica, and an easy walk to Havana Vieja. Larry Stein author of "4 Americans in Cuba"

I'm not sure if this is the right place to review, but we stayed in a room across the street which was arranged by this casa and we paid them. When we arrived we had to wait a little (which was fine because we were early), but they offered us a free espresso for the wait regardless. Overall it was a great stay. The room was large and pretty, we had a/c and a private bathroom with great shower. There was a bad smell sometimes coming from the bathroom but I chalk that up to city living, and we just closed the 2 doors when not in use. The woman who was helping us out at the casa - Esperanza- was AMAZING. So very friendly and making sure we had everything we needed, asked if we needed other arrangements made, etc. She even made us a delicious breakfast to go (giant slices of mango and mamey, generous portion of ham, eggs, and really good bread) when we had to catch a bus early in the morning, and topped up our water bottles. It is in such a good location, easy to find and easy to catch a taxi. I don't know why people complain about the cafe not arranging taxis.. we simply walked a few metres to the busy street (galiano?) and flagged a taxi within a few minutes even at 6am. I will definitely stay here again on my next trip, but probably book early enough to try the rooms on the cafe side!

Seasoned casa particular guest here, never given a 1 star but unfortunately this one deserves it. Had to move rooms as the original one was above the cafe and very noisy. Also the toilet was broken and it took the patron several hours to come repair it for us. We moved to a nicer room beside the inner courtyard which was a bit better. One of my biggest complaints is the fact that if you need to get in after the cafe is closed you have to ring a buzzer and wait on the street until someone lets you in. Being on vacation and all sometimes we would arrive in the early morning hours and wait for awhile outside, only to receive a nasty glare form the guy who opened the door. Breakfast offerings were mediocre at best and more expensive than other casas. Asked the patron to get us a cab in the morning to the bus and he was unable to provide us with assistance so we had to drag our suitcases down the rutted streets. Not fun...I won't stay here again!

We cut short our stay from 3 nights to 2 as we were so uncomfortable. Although other rooms may be better in this prettily decorated casa, ours was directly above the café at the front - noisy, hot, and awkward to access via the café. The bathroom was terrible - door fallen to bits, poor water supply for the shower [ other casas store more in rooftop tanks] and the wc dripped, blocked or flooded. The café breakfast was the most limited we ate in 2 trips totalling 2 months in Cuba. The owners were polite and friendly but unable to arrange the early morning taxi we needed, they did arrange a friend for a midday transfer instead. The street had poor lighting, a dug-up drain and burnt-out car - not the casa's fault, but be aware of the downsides of this Havana Centro location. We are used to the hospitality and standards of Cuban casas and this one left us deeply disappointed.

Londonroadhog We are so very sorry that you had an unsatisfactory experience at our Casa. As you can see from our other reviews we have NEVER received anything lower than 4 stars and the room you stayed in is one of our most popular and most recently redecorated. During the mornings the Cafe and street get busy, but that all settles down by the afternoon. There isn't much more I can say except that we feel very badly about your experience and in the future we will try to pay extra special attention to the concerns of tourists who rent that room. Your review will definitely make a difference for future guests.

This house was nothing short of home for two weeks! Mary, Miguel and the rest of the family are the most welcoming, kind and extraordinary people! Most of the time you don't even have to ask and they make things happen for you! Returning to them is not an if, simply a when!!!

We stayed one night and we regret this was only one night. Our room was tastefully decorated (an Underwood typewriter, carefully chosen porcelain figurines, wooden furniture, mirrors, beautiful lamps), the bed was just wonderful - wide and comfy. The flush in the toilet did not work properly but we were told about that beforehand. Also the water pressure under the shower could also be better but this happens :) Miguel is a perfect host, always there, checking, smiling and chatting (in Spanish). We adore Arcangel cafe downstairs. The place is 5 mins (walking distance) from Malecon and about 10 from Havana Vieja.

A comfortable casa at a perfect location in the city. All the attractions in walking distance. Mary, Miguel, their 2 sons, Mary's mother and other staff are very kind and helpful. Ask for a room at the back, as the one in front can be noisy. Although the rooms are very comfortable (we stayed in two different rooms), water is scarce. Don't expect too much. Just enjoy Havana as it is.

We spent five nights at Casa Mary y Miguel. Our hosts Mary y Miguel and their son Joel were friendly and helpful. The location is great. It was a short walk to the malecon, Centro and slightly longer walk to Vieja. The Casa was clean and comfortable with a very modern, private bathroom. The evening meal was delicious, the drinks were good and the coffee was great! It was a real bonus having the archangel cafe attached to the Casa. We highly recommend this Casa as a place to stay in Havana.
