Hostal San Juan is a small and elegant colonial style hotel of two floors located in Old Havana, in the Cathedral municipality. Built in the early 20th century, the hostal was completely renovated in 2014 to restore its magnificent original Havana beauty. The restoration was carried out with absolute respect of the original architecture and style of the building. Thus, all ceilings are five meters high. They are decorated with mouldings, ceilings ornament and antique glass lamps. French carpentry inspired cedar doors showcase wooden made shutters and solid bronze door handles. The floors are made of Spanish tiles with typical designs and stairs are of Italian white marble. All these remarkable features make the Hostal San Juan a precious authentic and genuine Havana style hotel. It is an ideal, safe and comfortable place for a memorable immersion in the life, culture and fantastic history of Old Havana- classified UNESCO World heritage site.

The El San Juan is a fantastic accommodation option for anyone visiting Havana Cuba, it is located in old Havana, with number of good restaurants around. The owner can recommend one or two and you will not be disappointed. You will be impressed by the hotel's beautiful well appointed rooms, with a/c in every one of them. The beds are cozy and comfortable ensuring a good night's sleep. We opted for breakfast every morning that was served on the roof top terrace. The hotel offers an airport pick up and return in one of those cars from 50s ( 1958 Chevy if I remember correctly) Overall, I would highly recommend the hotel, please work directly with the owner, he is so easy to work with. He will help you with everything you need to have awesome time in Havana. Stan Boksz

I have stayed in many casas and hotels in Cuba, and El San Juan is decent value for money. The hotel is located in the Old Town but only a few blocks from Parque Central (many buses don't drive to the Old Town). The atmosphere and the colonial style decor is lovely, like travelling back in time. It was fun to watch the lively old town from the small balcony of the room. The noise from the street was reduced thanks to the isolated balcony doors and thick curtains. However, the noise from the kitchen and lobby is not, so in the first morning I woke up at 7.00 when the cook started his breakfast preparations! The brekkie cost 5 CUC and was ok - not among the best we have had in Cuba, but enough. Eggs, bread and fruit, quite basic. All in all, this is a good base for exploring Havanna.

Staying at a B & B also called a Paledero, you get a basic room with a bath and air conditioning. No amenities other than a dining room table for the breakfast that was more than ample with fresh fruit, eggs, and sausage and great coffee. Then you're on your own for the day. Across the street there was a little cafe with live music...perfecto, and lots of street life and kids playing for people watching. All in all a pretty good basic value.

Our stay at Hostal El San Juan was delightful. We got the best of both worlds: North American comfort right where you ought to be in Havana. The building has been renovated to very high standards and is in pristine state of cleanliness. The room was very comfortable and had its own AC and ventilator on top of shutters that could let the air in when needed. The room was equipped with a safe and we felt at all times very safe. We also had our own bathroom en suite to the room and the bed was very comfortable. Philippe, our host, went out of his way to make us feel welcomed and was always willing to give us tips on where to eat or where to go Our days started with the very generous breakfast provided at the hostal, consisting of fresh fruits, coffee or tea, cold cuts, cheese and eggs. Once we went through the close neigbourhood of the hostal during the initial days, we aimed towards the other areas of Havana one by one. It is very easy moving through Havana whether by taxi, cocotaxi, cyclotaxi or just with rented bikes or on foot. We tried all means of transportation. If you use a taxi, negociate the price before going in. The taxi drivers invariably will ask you for too much money when quoting you a price. At the end of our touring days, we would come back to the hostal and rest a little after which, we would have a drink on the terrace. The hostal has a well stocked fridge with water and a few alcoolic beverages that you take and add to a tab that you pay at the end of your stay. After that drink we would go eat out at one of the many restaurants in the area most of the time recommended by Philippe. One night, we arranged to have a five to seven on the terrace. As grocery stores are not well stocked in Cuba, we ended up picking up finger food at the restaurant Habana 61 (highly recommended) which we ate with our drink (or was it drinks :-)) on the terrace. Another night, with friends, we ended up hiring the services of salsa dancers for a lesson on the terrace. It was a beautiful way to mingle with locals, to learn salsa and to help a young Cuban couple business wise. Philippe orchestrated the event for us. We also hired an old American car taxi driver for a tour of further neigbourhoods. We discovered an artistic Cuba (La Fabrica del Arte, Furster Land, La Finca Vigia are what I enjoyed the most) on top of Art Deco and Art Nouveau architecture. We surprisingly ate very well although the prices are not as cheap as one would expect. We are thinking of going back with our children for them to see Havana before it changes too much and we will stay again at Hostal El San Juan without the shadow of a doubt.

This is a unique find in Havana! Great value run by friendly host and staff. We were two couples and stayed 9 nights. Philippe is a genuine host with lots of recommendations of what to see and where to eat. Thanks to Philippe we ate very very well! He also arranged for us to be picked up in an old car and see some of the sights further away. The location could not be better. In the old part but away from the more crowded touristy area - yet a few minutes walk. Couldn't have picked a better location. Hostal El San Juan has been lovingly restored to very high standards with lots of period details. There are very high ceilings throughout and decent size bedrooms and common area. The rooms are spotless. Beds are comfortable. And every room has air conditioning, a fan and a safe. If you are a family, there are two rooms that form a suite. Ideal for a family with children. Breakfasts were filling and include eggs, cold cuts, cheese, bread, fruits and freshly squeezed juice as well as coffee. The staff are all exceptional and make you feel at home. There's no Internet connection but within a few minutes walk you'll find the large hotels where you can buy an Internet card and connect. Highly recommend Philippe's casa. We'll be back!

The room was comfortable, it had an A/C and a fan if you prefer or fresh air thru the shuttered doors. Ana and Miguel were our hosts and I could not have asked for better. They were always available and even with the language barrier we communicated well. The rooms were clean, the food was fresh and the hot water was plentiful. This hostal is now my stay of choice in Old Habana!! I would recommend it to everyone!!

The food really is great. A Cuban grill that cooks to your request!!!! I lead groups of photographers and recently I led 7-8 clients to this spot (which I like) and all of them raved about the food. I was disappointed last night when they were out of a few items (and bread) but they more than made up for it with service and other delicious choices. I LIKE THIS PLACE!

I stayed for 2 nights. One on my arrival to Havana, and the night before I left. Phillipe makes you feel extremely welcome into his home, and the place is just immaculate. I stayed in one of the rooms at the back, that has it's own bathroom. The place is beautiful, the bed was comfortable, and included breakfast was great. It's right in the middle of Old Havana, and walking distance to everything. It' a great place to stay, and highly recommend it.
