Nothing terrible about the room or the inn, but nothing wonderful either. It's a quirky historic building. The front desk is up a rather steep set of steps, so it's a hassle to lug all your luggage up there. No elevator. The bathroom was modernized about 20 years ago but not updated since. The furnishings were also about 20 years old, if not more. It was ok for one night. The AC worked and kept us cool during a hot night. It was dog friendly which was a big plus for us. I wouldn't go out of my way to stay in Knowlton but if you need to for one night, this is an ok choice.
We stayed here for a weekend getaway and it did not disappoint. Great food, great atmosphere and a prime location. We took advantage of the ski hills this time but would love to come back in the summer and see the many vineyards close by.
We had an amazing ski weekend hosted at the Auberge. The staff was so kind, friendly and accommodating. We really enjoyed the food and care they put into making our weekend an enjoyable event. Thank you so much. We look forward to booking future group trips at this location.
Great location near many ski trails. The room had lots of space, super clean and overlooked the park across the street. Extra blankets and pillows were in the room to use. The restaurant had a breakfast special with local duck which was delicious. Also highly recommend the salmon for dinner. Staff were very fast and good with orders for a bigger group.
We have checked in on February 27 for one night. The check out policy is at 11 am the next day. At nine thirty am, while I was still comfortably in my underwear drinking coffee , the house keeper open the door widely staring at my boyfriend and me . Our reaction was total surprise, not pleasant as one might guess. Her way of apology was “ oh you are still here”. We kindly told her that yes we were and we would not be checking out till eleven. At 10:15 ( thank God, this time we both were dressed) ,using her own key she swung the door widely open . This time the announcement was that she was advised we were gone. Knocking on a closed door prior to entering is a sign of culture and manners in any situation and at the hotel industry it a MUST. Naturally we were extremely irritated for being treated like that after paying 155$ for a bed , questionably clean bathroom and meagrely strong coffee that need to be taken from a common shared space. Mind you the housekeeper was not aware about mandatory policy of wearing a mask. When we voiced the facts to Johanne at the reception , her reaction was “ so what exactly you are complaining of ?”. We left for hiking . Later once in Montreal late I realized I left my pretty expensive jacket in the closet . I called at the number provided on the website . The night guard answered and told me that he would check in the morning At 6:40 the next day he called and told me that he found it in the room. Such a nice person and human being . That information puzzled me as of why the house keeper was rushing us to leave when there was no one to take the room. Is the cleaning protocol ignoring checking the closets ? Usually there should be a 24/48 between guests I would never ever recommend this place even for one third of the price that we paid.…
Those of you who have read the Inspecteur Gamache series will be keeping an eye out for some of the characters. Our room was perfect. This is an auberge, so the emphasis is not on modern, but quaint. Nevertheless, the rooms are comfortable and well-equipped. Lovely reception, and good food available at their bistro. You are a short walk to the beach, and right in the commercial area, which Is surrounded by historical buildings and beautiful homes.
As others have said, Auberge Knowlton is an older, historic hotel and if you want the ambience and conveniences of chain-type lodging, this is not that type of establishment. The rooms are definitely "period" décor and ambience which for us is what makes it charming. We have stayed here several times and always request Unit #1 which is a two room suite, away from the front, with plenty of room to spread out and relax. Definitely worth the small extra charge. The new owners (2018), have made a few improvements which were needed but have not tried to change the character of the inn. Johanne is at the front desk and is very friendly and helpful. On our recent stay, we had to cancel our final day and return home unexpectedly. We paid the cancellation fee and received an email from Johanne later that day saying the room was re-booked and she would credit us the cancellation fee. Not everyone would do that and it's indicative of the integrity of the new ownership.…
We enjoyed well prepared fresh food for a very enjoyable lunch. The reason we went there was after reading Louise Penny books and her description of eating at the Auberge. I would return there on the next visit.
I've read all fourteen of the Gamache series and I wanted to go see what Knowlton was all about. The Auberge is a great place to eat and people watch. It is the only real "Fine Dining" venue available close to where we were staying. We had a great meal, the service was excellent and the staff was friendly.
The location is perfect! Much of the building has been rebuilt following a fire several years ago so everything it neat and clean. Alas, room #6 with twin beds lack character and comfort. The beds were short so that my feet on my 5'10" frame extended beyond the end. The comforters were heavy, the chairs had no lights for reading, and it was impossible to turn on the light in the tiny bathroom without simultaneously turning on a roaring fan. There were only cheap plastic glasses for water, one small shampoo but no conditioner, and no coffee maker. It was fine for one night but a come down after three nights in a wonderful, if slightly funky, Hotel Terrasse Dufferin, in Quebec City for the same price.
