This property is up for sale at auction on the 23rd.November. It is still offering rooms but that surely should not be allowed. We stayed there in June and it was awful, much as other reviewers have commented - overpowering dog smells, tatty unkempt decor, poor facilities and generally very shabby. The appearance and attitude of the owner was not encouraging and she seemed indifferent to our complaints about lack of hot water. Maybe the sale is the right conclusion to a sad enterprise.
We stayed here as a couple, with another couple last weekend as we had a day at the races. Anneka let us drop our bags off early, before checkin. She was a lovely lady and made us feel at home. We knew before we stayed that the breakfast option was cereals and fruit in our room. Both rooms were clean and tidy, clean beds and the bins were emptied. The pipes are old and the plumbing is not good so you have to pop your toilet roll in the bin if it was more than 3 pieces. I can see a lot of people have complained about this but if you are abroad the same thing happens. It is a beautiful old house and has many quirks but this is what makes this place special. The bed was one of the comfiest I have ever slept in! So nice that I’ve asked if Anneka if would be able to send me in the direction to buy the pillows etc, which she is more than happy to do. Yes there are dogs there and I only saw them as I asked as I love dogs they are beautiful and friendly little things. My friends on the other hand did not see the dogs once. I feel bad for Anneka as she is struggling on her own after her husband passed away it’s a huge project for one person to undertake. She is selling the property, but until that time she is the stuck there. There was a cleaner there when we stayed. The decor was all flowers and chintzy but It goes with the house. We would stay here again and would recommend it to everyone.…
My wife and I booked a three-night stay at Tintern Old Rectory in August 2022. The website appeared to show a four-star rating from Visit Wales (still there at the time of writing). We were made aware that there was no breakfast available, but only after we had booked our stay and paid for the first night. By that time, we would not have been able to cancel without paying the full amount. The proprietor was very welcoming, but there was a strong smell of stale urine in the reception area that was off-putting. I presume this is down to the proprietor's dogs. As I took the cases upstairs, it was clear that the carpet badly needed vacuuming. Upon entering our room, I was taken aback at the decor which was yellowing and faded. The room had clearly not been decorated for many years. The proprietor then explained that the toilet in our room could take a maximum of three sheets of toilet paper per flush; any more than that would need to be put in the bin by the side of the toilet. I understand why this is necessary (narrow pipes, macerator etc.) and it might have been acceptable, but we then found that the poo bin had not been emptied and still contained waste from the previous guest. The proprietor had put some cereal packets in our room to make up for the lack of breakfast which was a nice gesture. However, she had also put unrefrigerated milk there too. Given the high temperatures we were experiencing, I would not have been prepared to use the milk the following morning as it would almost certainly have spoiled. My wife and I considered the situation for a short while and then decided we were not prepared to stay. We had not unpacked, so it was a simple matter to bring our cases back downstairs. To be fair to the proprietor, she asked why we were not staying so that she could learn from that and improve things. Unfortunately by then, I did not feel able to talk about wee, poo and hygiene in the open reception area, so I didn't give much feedback. We agreed with the proprietor that we would pay for two of the three nights booked and we departed about half an hour after we had arrived. Subsequently, we contacted Visit Wales who confirmed that the signage on the website was theirs, but they claim that Tintern Old Rectory is not registered with them. We have left the matter with Visit Wales to investigate and resolve.…
A very relaxing, three day break in the Old Rectory. Stayed with our small dog, and had our own 'entrance' and an extremely comfortable room. Lovely warm welcome from our hostess and good selection of teas, coffees, biscuits, cereals and fresh fruit in our room. Love to return, and I'll never forget where I was when I heard of the Queen's death!
I stayed here as I had always wanted to visit Tintern Abbey, I came as a getaway on my own. I had a very warm welcome and my room was lovely, bright and very clean. I had a great view from the window. Breakfast was no longer included and I knew this from booking so I wasn't disappointed. This was a very nice, relaxing night away.
Imagine a 17th-century cottage tucked away in a green and flourishing garden overlooking the river Wye just downstream from Tintern Abbey. Imagine a beautifully appointed, comfortable and clean room with lovely views and all modern amenities. Add a warm welcome and a delicious breakfast, and you have Old Tintern Rectory B & B. Don't miss it!
***UPDATE I HAVE SPOKEN TO THE POLICE WHO HAVE RECORDED IT AS THEFT AND I AM GIVING AN OFFICAL STATEMENT***** FYI TINTERN ABBEY OLD RECTORY B & B PLEASE SHARE AVOID AVOID AVOID !!! absolutely disgusting place, messy with dogs eating off the guests plates in the kitchen!!! The kitchen was very messy and dirty. You were also told you could only urinate in the ensuite toilet with a maximum of 3 sheets of paper per flush! The smell of dog is absolutely over powering, and I have dogs myself. It advertises full English breakfast then when we asked for it the owner looked at us like we had 3 heads and offered us yogurt with flies in and sour bread. The best part of all this is I stupidly left earrings of huge sentimental value there (in my haste to get the hell out of there!) I rang and asked for them to be posted. she confirmed she had them and that she would charge me the postage., fair enough....then after 2 weeks I rang and she finally told me the house keeper had thrown them out!! no apology and then slammed the phone down, shouting how it wasnt her fault. These are not a cheap pair of earrings......why would you throw them out?! I understand I shouldn't of left them but for her to say she would send them and understood about sentimental things to then just throw them away. She also threw my credit card details entact into the bin for anyone to see. This is a GDPR breach. Dogs licking plates is an environmental health breach. The owner is very odd and makes you feel super uncomfortable! ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ! Ps every single thing I have said is the truth so let's see what lies you tell Anika as previous negative reviews have been met with your aggression !!!…
This is by far a quirky fabulous bnb, if you don't expect and are able to be flexible, you will enjoy the uniqueness off what is on offer. Its a very old establishment that does not have super modern appliances. _ old noisy toilet system that requires less paper to prevent blockages. The host Aneka appeared to a one woman show with her four doggies she clearly informed us of the "requirements" to prevent blockages. The shower again old but worked well. Lots of lovely quality toiletries. Bed was immaculate and extremely comfy. TV again old but worked! Sitting area provided interesting books and nick nacks including lovely baskets and blankets. Breakfast room was small but well equiped - we met some lovely people and one miserable rude woman who was openly critical of the host.... though it was extremely odvious Aneka was trying her best to accodate her guests . We enjoyed early morning walks prior to breakfast to ease congestion in the dining area. Though full cooked breakfast was advertised it was not offered ever morning but bacon & choice of eggs were offered on two of our 3 nights stay. Bread and local spreads, cheeses, fresh salmon & fresh berries, yoghurt also the good range of cereals. This is a proper Bnb that we fear is slowly going to be a thing of the past. Which will be missed once its gone. Read the reviews, take the positive, if the negative points upset you then rethink your plans - it's not going to suit everybody's expectations. it is what it is, hence be flexiable and adjust to Anekas warm welcome. We really enjoyed our days. The local pub does an excellent lunchtime / evening menu too . Area is fabulous. Thanks Anika 😊 we will visit again. Take care of your self.…
We stayed at the Tintern Old Rectory in July and had a short, but lovely visit. Our host was knowledgeable of the area and recommended the best places to eat. We had the Garden Suite which was clean, quiet and comfortable. We didn't include breakfast in our booking but was served a continental breakfast nonetheless. Lots of stuff to see and do within walking distance.
The rectory is just up the road from the abbey ruins . Rooms on the front of the house have a view across the road to the Wye River. The rooms are rather frou-frou, decorated in a grandmotherly style. The rooms downstairs are full of interesting books and items collected from around the world. The remarkable landlady has small, friendly, furry white dogs but they are not allowed upstairs. A glance in the kitchen was impressive for the mess and what a job it would be to clean it up. The menu, however, was beyond the call, offering smoked salmon, omelettes and waffles.
