While the hotel's amenities, including the spa, are generally appreciated, some visitors have encountered issues like inconsistent hot water and maintenance shortcomings. This is a really stunning hotel, the grounds are amazing, and it's a quiet and relaxing spot. We booked 'The Just Us Package', which included a spa treatment, 4 course meal and breakfast. It's was a stunner of a day, but when we checked in, our apartment was boiling, the radiators were all on! It's August. We tried to turn them all off but couldn't manage to turn them all off.

We went for our spa treatment, I had called and booked the two full body massages 2 weeks prior, but when we arrived, our options had changed and we had to choose 2 x 25 minute treatments, none of which were full body. I understand things change in regard to covid, exposure to workers etc, if that's the case the website needs to be changed, and I should have been advised when I made the booking, as this would have potentially changed the package we booked.

For dinner, it advertised as a 4 course meal, we had 3 courses, which were really delicious. But when we quiered this upon check out, we were advised that the 4th course was tea/coffee. Again, change the advertisement on the website to be reflective of what's actually on offer.
Overall, we really enjoyed our time at the hotel, celebrating our anniversary and some alone time from the kids, it was beautiful, clean, the staff were great, most of whom wore masks. They had great clean down procedures of tables, chairs etc. I hate to complain, but guests should get what's advertised especially for paying a large amount of money and expect a high quality experience.

**update**
Following our stay the Spa Manager made contact to understand the situation. There had been confusion 're the packages and we had indeed received the wrong treatments, she was very nice and very apologetic and promised two gift vouchers. We're very appreciative with this offer.

We stayed in a ground floor 2 bed apartment. The living room / kitchen area was spacious as was the bathroom. The bathroom had underfloor heating which was a nice touch. The bedroom with the double bed was a bit small in terms of how the furniture was laid out. My husband had to climb past the wardrobe in order to get out of the room. So strange layout. Also, there was a bedside table lamp but no actual main light on the ceiling which wasn't ideal. The second bedroom with the twin beds was much larger and suited the kids. Although not in the way, the storage shelving units were strangely placed. There was a main light but it was off to the side of the room rather than centred and was quite dim. The kitchen/ living area had a couple of couches that needed a bit more of a wipe. There were crumbs embedded in the creases and the couches were very stiff and uncomfortable. There was a small area between the fridge and the wall in the kitchen which could've done with cleaning as I could see a dead spider and some crumbs on the floor. Overall quite clean, just some small things. There is no lift to the floors above so people have to use a metal stairway. We found this very noisy especially first thing in the morning and late at night. Lots of slamming of doors and conversations above us. I would still recommend the place though as the location and grounds were very nice with a small playground and a white horse nearby to appeal to the kids. The Staff were very friendly and it was great value for money.

We stayed in Lake Isle room in the old manor house, there is the potential for this place to be very special but it just fell flat. The first thing that we noticed was the foul smell from the bathroom on entering the room. The room consisted of large lounge, very big bedroom and huge bathroom with dressing area. However it was soulless - a few tweaks could make all the difference. 2 mirrors beside sink but no mirror in either the dressing area or the bedroom. There were no towel rails anywhere in the bathroom. The bath leaked (this might have been where the awful smell came from), but staff get someone to come to fix it next morning. A hairdryer was provided but it was the type that had a plastic holder that should be screwed to the wall but it just had a plug, so I had to try to hold the large attachment in one hand while holding the hairdryer in the other hand - no possibility of brushing/styling hair at same time. On our second day all the sockets in the lounge area tripped out, but we could not find the trip to reset.
The staff complied with all covid-19 regulations and we felt safe from that perspective. However, this meant that the menu was very limited.
We won't be back.

Myself and my partner stayed here for two nights over Valentines week to celebrate our engagement. The staff at the hotel gave us a king room which we were delighted about. However, when we got settled into the room we noticed when we wanted a cup of tea, the tray that the kettle was on was covered in dust. Also, The hallway outside our bedroom was extremely noisy during our stay as there was doors banging constantly. We discussed this problem with reception only to be told ‘I will pass this on to maintenance’. Nothing else was done about this.
There was very little atmosphere at night or during the day which left us with no choice but to head back to the room early evening as at times, we felt we were the only people there. Reception staff were not very friendly as anytime we walked passed their heads went down. Also, for anyone hoping to enjoy a relaxing few hours in the spa, without a treatment, we had to pay €10 each per day to avail of the relaxing room which was ridiculous.
All in all, a very disappointing stay for us.

I recently visited the spa with my sisters and mother. We received the shoulder, back and neck massage and facial. We found the facilities to be very poor. The robes and slippers were fine. The hot tub we nicknamed as "tepid tub" as we were cold sitting in it so promptly got out. We asked to have the temperature turned up a bit but were told that it was impossible. The sauna and steam room were fine. The relaxation suite was very disappointing.

There were skins of fruits obviously delivered and eaten by previous guests but we were not given fresh fruit and were left to look at the dirty plates and glasses of the previous guests. The lounge beds were hard and due to a lot of open doors, the area was very cold. The views were very nice however.

Two of our group had Andy as their therapist who they reviewed highly for the treatments and who was very friendly. The other two had a female therapist who was very disappointing. The massages were extremely poor with bad technique and weak pressure even after requesting to increase pressure.

There was no music and the lights in the room were overhead very bright lights which made it impossible to relax at all. The worst however was that the therapist chewed gum loudly throughout the entire treatment and also burped several times during the facial which was very off-putting. The sound of chewing further made it impossible to relax or enjoy the treatment at all along with the general environment. The heated towels were very nice however.

The facial was slightly more relaxing bar the very bright lights right above your head. However the products were very oily and greasy. There were also no questions about any skincare during or before the treatment which I found very unusual compared to other facials I've previously had. The head massage was enjoyable however because there were many products on her fingers, it left my hair very greasy and unpleasant. I decided I would wash my hair in the shower but realised that neither of the 2 available hair dryers were working. I actually witnessed another guest attempting to dry her hair with the hand dryer because of this (not very luxurious).

Due to the open doors all around the relaxation suites, we got dressed before attempting to sit there since it was so cold but the general atmosphere and lack of music didn't allow for relaxation so we left shortly after.

All in all, an extremely poor experience at least for 2 of us, the other 2 really enjoyed Andy's methods of massage and facial and found him very pleasant. Would recommend asking for him if you do decide to go to this spa.

Having read some other reviews on here, there are similar ones dated 2016 but hopefully they will improve the training of their staff and facilities in order to improve the experience.

We stayed on a couples break in the guest house. Our room was beautiful with a living area with sofa a king size bed and a beautiful bathroom. Only problem was that it was damp and smelled of gas. The manager came in and agreed. We were moved to a room at the bottom of the house which we were told was must better. It wasn't. It was smaller and there was wall paper hanging off in the bathroom. Plus the doors in the room had broken glass. We had reservations in the restaurant and thought the room was the better of 2 disasters. We went to the 'restaurant' along side our table was a table of 4. There was one waiter who we rarely seen. We ordered seafood cowder starter and it tasted like veg soup with haddock thrown in 😏 our fillet steaks came with a whole fried onion on each plate! The potato gratins were dry and cold under the hard crust. The vegtables were soaked in butter. By the time a waitress came our meal had been sitting in eaten for 10mins. I complained and we were given a house wine. I wasn't drinking so this was lost on me I just wanted dinner! The next day, we had our afternoon tea. One of the worst meals I've ever tasted! The sandwiches had been left in the fridge the tea was sold and no atmosphere at all in the bar. Very disappointed

We spent a lovely time in Castle Dargan, we were there for two nights. The staff were very helpful and friendly, especially the night porter. We stayed in the apartments, if using them ask for oven/microwaves/cutlery in advance if needed. We also used the Spa and it was so relaxing, would recommend this hotel for anyone looking to get away to relax. Food in the bar was also lovely!

Stayed for a one night get away for dinner, bed and breakfast at Castle Dargen. Check in was friendly and efficient. The bar food area could do with a touch up. We were both looking forward to dinner in your dining room but unfortunately the dining room was reserved for couples attending a wedding fair and could not be availed of by other guests which was a let down and instead had dinner off the main bar and the menu was the same "bar food" from earlier. Breakfast was served in the dining room by friendly staff and was delicious !! The rooms were comfortable and ticked all the boxes - however House keeping should look at the state of carpet stains in certain rooms which is quite off putting !! The Hotel is set in a lovely location but probably needs a wee bit of fine tuning inside in these strange times !!! I'm not a complainer but hope my comments are constructive rather than derogatory. Hope to be back someday !!

Today's visit to Castle dargan was more than disappointing.
We booked in for afternoon tea which we were really looking forward to. When we arrived the receptionist while was lovely, lacked basic training to know where afternoon tea was even served.
Once we got to our seat upstairs in the bar, the waitress came quickly to take our orders of either coffee or tea.
Approximately 5 minutes later we received our afternoon tea stand and 5 minutes afterwards our coffees arrived.
The sandwiches served consisted of a lettuce and butter sandwich, cheese and red pepper, and lettuce and coleslaw sandwich.
The cheese sandwiches were soggy and the coleslaw sandwich was gone off. When we mention this to the waitress she insisted it was freshly made that morning but took it away to replace.
The duty manager came to apologise a few minutes later and also insisted the sandwiches were freshly made this morning. We received fresh sandwiches about 10 mins later which were made of tomatoes and lettuce, and cucumber sandwiches. The remainder of the afternoon tea was bought in and near inedible.
While a 50% discount was given, we would very very highly not recommend afternoon tea in Castle Dargan.

I visited the Castle Dargan hotel in June with a friend, the first weekend the hotels were open again after lockdown.
Our room was nice and spacious, the grounds of the hotel were lovely for a stroll and the food we got each night over the course of our 3 night stay was delicious.
Some areas of improvement would be the morning breakfast. The scone we got on the first morning was hard and no fruit scones or pastries were available the second and third morning despite being on the menu. The eggs Benedict and French toast carried an additional cost. There was also no cocktail menu available.
However, the staff were very friendly and attentive over the course of your stay and overall we enjoyed our staycation at the Castle Dargan hotel.

I just read your review Jess and had completely forgotten about the insane wait for food. The excuse we were given was that there was only one waiter working that night in the dining room, (which quite frankly is ridiculous in any restaurant)! If it had been busy I'd have understood that excuse, as crazy as it was, but there were only four tables occupied when we had dinner. We watched as other tables received their meals before us and I had to stop the waiter a few times to ask what happened to our orders. Absolute disgrace for a place that advertises itself as a "4 star resort".
