Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Hotel generally was clean and well kept. Wife and I had a one night stay here midweek. Room was spacious, clean and VERY WARM! The walk in shower could have done with a scrub over the tiles (small bits of mold) Staff were all excellent very pleasant and eager to please... 5 stars to them. The main problem for us was the food...... The menu is very limited there are none of the basic standards like Fish and chips, Burgers etc. dont know what teenagers would eat? For red meat eaters like me there is Sirloin steak or rack of lamb. I choose Rack of lamb (the most expensive on the menu at €34.50) and my wife had a seafood platter (€28.50) The Rack of Lamb consisted of 4 small lamb chops that were a dull grey colour and looked like they had not been near a grill or flame. They were poor quality and on top of it all were tough (especially as I was not given a steak knife). The sea food platter was equally poor. The mussels were the best part. The Calamari was not cooked and inedible. The prawns were small and impossible to remove from the shell. The small fillet of fish was dry and curling up at the edges. Altogether very disappointing when you are paying top dollar for your meal. Breakfast was passable at best. I had Irish breakfast and the wife had pancakes The Hotel is out in the country and you cannot decide to eat anywhere else as you would have to drive a good few Kms. Other than the food letdown our stay there was very pleasant.

I stayed here recently on a work trip. Hotel staff were amazing at reception and welcoming rooms were nice and clean that you would expect from a 4 star hotel. But 1 big let down was the trying to be 5 star food menu in the bar unfortunately I had meant to be potato and leek soup and it was the most disgusting thing I ever tasted or seen served to anyone anywhere. Maybe the chef was having a bad day. But the rest of dinner was nice and dessert too. Breakfast was delish and very friendly staff looked after breakfast guests well too. Please don't let your chefs ruin this lovely hotel.

We had a most enjoyable stay in Castle Dargan. All of your staff were excellent. When we arrived we were checked into a bedroom, where there was a smell of people smoking. This was an issue as my Wife suffers from asthma. I phoned Reception at 11.30 pm on Monday 29th August to be told by the Night Porter, Sean, that he would look into it and try and move us; I assumed that would be the end of hearing from Sean!!. However with 10 minutes, I got a call from Sean moving us to a fresh room; needless to say we were very impressed with Sean, and this contributed great to a most enjoyable stay in your hotel. Yes we will be back.

5star wedding venue. We had the most spectacular day from start to finish. We had most of our dealings with Caroline the wedding Co-Ordinator in Castle Dargan. She was an absolute pleasure to deal with, she should be nominated for best wedding coordinator of the year. Nothing was trouble she really worked with us on every aspect of our wedding. We had made our wedding quite personalised and everything on the day was displayed excatly as we wanted. All of the staff were amazing especially Jessica who was efficient and effective with planning and organising our accomadation. Thr only downfall there is limted rooms but taxis are available. Zoltan looked after our meal, the meal was fantastic the quality of food was suberb. Grounds spectacular and function room breath taking. A beautiful place for photos. Castle dargan house is just beaituful, we just wish we had longer there and could relive the day agin. If you want beautiful grounds and an initamite wedding with friends and family this is your place. You are made feel so special. The staff are fantastic. Spa facilities also excellent. Looking forward to return for our anniversary and utilise all the wonderful facilities and grounds . Thank you Castle Dargan. Siobhan&Sean

Unfortunately this experience was a poor one. Starters were nice to be fair but our main course didn’t arrive until an hour later. Potatoes had an aftertaste and overall it was only warm as opposed to being ha hot dinner. I like crunchy veg but the broccoli could have done with more than 2 minutes being in the hot water. Personally I think it could be easily fixed with some simple staff training. Hopefully this can be actioned and improvements can be made to allow it reach its potential which it already has had in the past. Please take this as constructive criticism as opposed to a rant. I’m sure 1 weeks training would see huge improvement.

Make no mistake, this is a fine, well-appointed, hotel in a quiet, well-out-of-the-way location so no problem on that score. The food, however, let the place down badly. We dined in the rather expensive restaurant where the mussels were tiny and immature and the steaks were of poor quality. There is simply no excuse for these deficiencies.
