Recently visited Aherlow House for food on a Saturday evening. We were seated on the terrace outside - lovely views and the tables were well spaced out. The menu was great, with plenty of choice. The food itself was amazing…definitely exceeded my expectations. The portions are huge - the starters could definitely do as mains, if you ordered a side. The downside was the service. There was a number of staff working and even though the hotel wasn’t overly busy, service was severely lacking. We were given a jug of water and the jug was filthy. One of the waitresses who brought the food to our table didn’t even know what dish she was carrying and informed us that she didn’t know what was on the menu (super unprofessional!). One of the waiters said he’d get us ketchup and salt, but it never arrived. During our meal, nobody checked to see if it was okay or if they could get us anything. I’ve heard similar complaints from friends about how poor the service is. Some hospitality training and better management wouldn’t go amiss. It’s a real pity, because the food really is 10 out of 10.

We were touring the area in the hottest week of July and stopped here for lunch on the terrace. The food was excellent with a good range and good valley for money. The staff were very friendly. Don't miss the desserts which were lovely. We would highly recommend it.

We had a voucher for dinner so we decided to check it out. I ordered the chicken wings and they were gorgeous. The batter was great, the chicken was soft and tender, it came coated in a lovely sauce, there were vegetables on the side with hummus and it was amazing. I highly recommend. Although, I ended up ordering what I thought would be a small dessert (from the kids menu) but when it came it was surprisingly large. It was a chocolate brownie with a scoop of cream and ice cream. It was still gorgeous but I doubt a child could eat all that after a big meal. But altogether it was great and the views were beautiful. P.s At the moment it is very hot but only a few tables have umbrellas and they still don’t shade all of the table. Although, 4 tables have marque type things over them which are nice and shaded. But it’s first come first serve so just keep that in mind when visiting that you might have to end up sitting in the scorching sun. And the drinks area doesn’t have any umbrellas at all.

Dined outside (as was not a resident at the hotel) one afternoon and the staff were great. Food was ok too. However, we were turned away in the evening because we had not reserved a table, even though when we phoned a week earlier we were told they were not taking reservations and we just needed to arrive and wait our turn. Poor communication deserves a low rating!

We couldnt fault our overnight stay in Aherlow, friendly, attentive staff. Clean, comfy room with little noise which gave us a restful sleep. Plenty of scenic walks with stunning views. A real getaway and perfect for walkers and nature enthusiasts.
