We used Gites Mayo as our jump-off point during a 3-week exploration of the islands of Guadeloupe.
LOCATION. Gites Mayo is located on the west slope of Basse Terre in a small fishing and diving village called Pigeon, a few kilometers north of Bouillant, near the Cousteau Reserve. The nearest swimming beach is a few hundred yards north at Malendure Bay, but the entire west side of Basse Terre is dotted with splendid beaches, both large and small. Our favorite beach was Petit Anse for the snorkeling, sand, and shade trees.
HOTEL AMENITIES. The hotel has two types of rooms: guest rooms and studios. If you stay in a guest room you will likely enjoy a splended view of the Caribbean Sea, offshore islands, and the setting sun from a private terrace. The clean and cheerful rooms have good beds and soft linens, a dresser, a deliciously hot shower, ceiling fan, air conditioner, spare bed, and other amentiies. The guest rooms have a French breakfast daily in a common dining room, and access to a fully equipped kitchen for other meals, with private cupboard and refrigerator space. The studios are equally nice, slightly larger (sleeps 4) with private kitchens. The studios face northwest, with a fine harbor view.
If you enjoy an evening drink, the hotel's cheerful and amusing host, Johnny, serves cocktails. Two nights a week, you can sign up for a delicious French Caribbean meal prepared by the hostess Brigette. These are fun, festive occasions with great food, and are highly recommended.
ATTRACTIONS. Nearly everything is Guadeloupe is "nearby" since the islands are small and the road system is efficient. The main roads circumnavigate the two main islands with almost no stop signs. Gites Mayo is a superb location since it is near many fine beaches, the island's national park (a tropical rain forest with many trails), an active volcano, and several good museums and tourist sites. Local Creole and upscale restaurants are also close, as well as a good bakery, two large grocery stores, a laundromat, and a well-stocked general store. One of the world's best diving schools is a few blocks away where you can obtain an international certificate in 3 days through one-on-one diving instruction from an expert. There are also countless fresh water swimming sites in the mountain's crystal clear rivers. Other hotel guests found nearby hotsprings too.
We took several day trips to neighboring islands (you can drive to Grande Terre or ferry to the Saintes). Grande Terre is only 40 minutes away if you use the Transverse Route through the mountains. It has great surfing sites, expansive beaches, and a rich history of sugar cane, slavery, and liberation. There is a colorful market in Port a Pitre which is a bit touristy but a good place to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, and spices. Les Saintes was pleasant, but a bit more touristy than we liked. We found good snorkerling on Les Saintes but did not try to dive (which was recommended).
GETTING AROUND. Guadeloupe driving is not for the faint of heart. It is not unlike a car race video game. Especially on Basse Terre, the drivers move very quickly up, down, and around tight sporty curves. Side roads up the mountain are quite exciting. During your first day or two, you will do well to pull out of traffic and let the faster cars pass by, until you are more accustomed to your rental car's capabilities, the steep contours of the narrow roads, and the pace. After that, you might decide this is the most fun driving you've ever had. Hitchiking is common and safe.
VALUE. The Euro is strong against the US dollar, so Gites Mayo was an exceptionally good value for American travelers. Fresh food was pricier than anticipated, so access to the hotel's kitchen helped keep our travel budget in control.
LANGUAGE. Johnny and Brigitte both speak enough English to be of great assistance, but in general visitors to this French island will find few English speaking people. Without French language skills, you will be out of the loop socially, but you can get your needs met with sign language and a phrase book. You should try to speak French. In smaller towns, it is common courtesy to greet the people you meet with Bonjour (hello) or Bonsoir (good evening), even if they are strangers and you are just passing by.
MONEY. Travelers checks were worthless in Guadeloupe. We could not find one place to cash them. Instead, you will need a credit card with an international chip, common in Europe but rare in the U.S. Ask you bank specifically for this type of card. ATM cards are also dicey, but we got ours to work after trying several banks. Still we ran into daily withdrawal limits that prompted frequent trips to the ATM. Euros are your best bet.
SAFETY. This was a pretty safe island. We didn't usually lock our car properly (we meant to but did not understand all the doors had to be closed before keying the lock) but we had no problems with intruders or theft.
SUMMARY. Guadeloupe was more fast paced and prosperous than we anticipated, very much like a French Hawaii, but without the silly glitz of American-style high rises and luxury corporate hotels. It is a tropical paradise, earthy, natural, warm, and very friendly, with a pleasing, rich Creole atmosphere. Gites Mayo is a charming, clean, and comfortable hotel offered at a good price in a great location. Basse Terre was an exceptionally diverse island with many things to do for outdoors and water enthusiasts.

+1
The best place to enjoy a family holidays. Spacious air-conditioned studio with a large terrace and a beautiful view of the bay. The morning you can start with a great breakfast of local fruits and delicious jams to fresh bread and coffee. Small but clean pool - great for kids. Very close to the Malendure beach and underwater reserve which can be visited by boat with a glass bottom. Other lovely beaches in the area. Car is necessary to see the surrounding countryside (waterfalls, volcano, National Park, ZOO, etc).
Absolutely nice, cheerful and helpful hosts Brigitte and Johnny.
Thank you for all, best regards and I hope see you soon!!!!!!!!!!

Gite Mayo is a very quiet and calm B&B, the rooms are very nice and clean and the owners are always available and helpful. There is a fantastic view from the balcony, the breakfast is excellent, with tropical fruit, fresh bread and both cold and warm drinks.
It is located on the west coast of Guadeloupe's Grande Terre, it is close to quite a few nice beaches, snorkeling and diving spots and nice restaurants. Still, you would definitely need a car and, if you plan to also visit Basse Terre, plan around 2h to get to the other side of Guadeloupe.
There is wi-fi available in the common spaces, a shared kitchen and also a swimming pool for those who are interested. Price is very competitive.

We stayed here for one week and had an amazing time, being made to feel so welcome by Johnny and Brigitte. The studio had everything: kitchenette, great view, air conditioning, mosquito net, spaciousness, balcony.
It's a steep walk down to supermarkets, then a bit further to beach and restaurants and dive shops galore. The main attractions if you don't have a car is the Jacques Cousteau reserve for brilliant diving and snorkeling for all levels, and hiking.
We came during wet season and had a few days of rain, my advice if you're coming in rainy season is to plan to stay a bit longer in each place in case of inclement weather. And bring a good book. Also you should learn at least basic French, it will make things a lot easier and pleasant!

We stayed in Gite Mayo for 6 nights, and the stay was great - Johny & Brigitte are super helpful, rooms are clean, view is breathtaking. 5min drive to Malendure beach, ideal for divers. The shared kitchen is very convenient, especially in off season where lot of places around are closed. We really loved it there!

We spent six days on Guadeloupe and stayed at this wonderful place. The hosts are very friendly and the room was really nice. The view from the balcony is fantastic, you can enjoy the sunset with a perfect view over the sea and the "Réserve Cousteau". The breakfast was very tasty - a perfect start into the day!
The b&b is located near the "Plage de la Malendure", a ideal starting point for activity at the beach. We've enjoyed our stay very much and can warmly recommend this place.

We stayed three nights with Johnny and Brigitte during Christmas. We arrived on Christmas eve and Johnny managed to reserve us a table in a really good restaurant for the evening - really kind!
Our room was quite small but very cozy and absolutely clean.
From the terrasse you have the perfect spot for a sundowner and Johnny mixes really good Ti Punchs.
The breakfast contains bread, a good choice of jams and always fresh fruit. You are welcome to use the kitchen at any time as well so you can make your own eggs or pankakes.
We would definitely stay there again.
