We stayed at the Thornton Manor for a long weekend, hiring the Gardeners Mews appartment. THE GARDENS This venue has the most beatiful grounds and it is a little bit like exploring a 'secret garden' with a number of consequitive areas next to each other - each one with a different feel. You can also make a large loop around the estate and the lakeside which was great for dog walks or morning run. Hares and partidges run from uder you feet was you walk. It's a truly stunning place, and so peaceful we often had it only to ourselves. One day, we enjoyed a picknick in one of the gardens - we have not seen a soul. There are plenty of beauty spots - a photographers paradise if you are planning a wedding there (its predominantly a wedding venue). It's a historical venue, Lord Leverhulme's mansion house, which is full of harm. SERVICE The service from the staff was excellent, and they were in touch throuhout the stay. We ordered some prosecco and were welcomed with an ice bucket and some music. V nice. APPARTMENT The appartment we stayed in, was suitable for 4 people as it had two double beds. We took a small dog with us, and Gardeners Mews was the only appartment that we were allowed one in (when we booked, there were other people with dogs too). The place was comfortable and spacious, but a little in need of a TLC - nothing to deter you from staying there. We slept in a smaller bedroom as it had a view of the gardens and lovely windows. The bed was too soft for me, but ok for my husband - so it depends on your preferences. The bathroom was fine, the kitchen had a fridge, microwave and cooker - all accessories were there. It's small, so dont expect to be cooking great big meals there. There is a pub, 15 min walk from the estate (or 5 min drive), which serves some comfort food - it was very nice. One thing you need to know about Gardeners Mews is that steep steps lead to the appartment - it was fine for us, but my parents would have struggled. Also, one of the rooms in on a lover level - three steep steps lead down to the room. Not a thing for us, but again - might be to people with mobility issues. I hope this beautiful appartments gets a revamp at some point - it can really take a four poster bed, strong wall colour and the floors would be much nicer if the carpet was taken up, and the beautiful wooden floor underneath got exposed. Sorry - just designer streak in us was going off, such potential! The hot tubs are outside of the appartments and they're a lovely treat. I wish the one we had could be located somewhere with a view (we had courtyard view). LOCATION This estate is perfectly situated - close to Chester, Liverpool, Designer shopping mall and coast - within 15/20 min you reach any of these, yet you feel like you are in a middle of nature reserve. As you might have guessed, we highly recommend this historical venue - some of the cottages on the grounds looked super special with romantic views over the fields from their hot tubs!…
Lovely place to visit with plenty of grounds to enjoy. Staff were friendly and we enjoyed our rooms in the gatehouse. Spa was a bonus that we all enjoyed. Some sprucing up would have resulted in an extra star. We will book again when next visiting the area.
What a lovely night we had. Having two young children staying in an apartment was perfect for us. We took them to the local playground, had a drink in the pub, dinner in the apartment and a night cap in the beautiful gardens. In the morning we went for a lovely walk in the secret gardens, meadow and to the pond. Was like having a National Trust property all to ourself! Would return in a heartbeat
A few friends and I stayed in their Gatehouse apartment at the end of May 2021 and it was really lovely. We appreciated the historical vibe with a modern touch; the hot tub at the property is a fantastic addition. The beds were the comfiest things ever, really spacious too. The place was clean, open and welcoming, we'd really love to come back here again if we get the chance. Only thing I'd say that could do with some work is the kitchen oven could do with a clean; we got smoked out when trying to cook a pizza because of spilt oil that was left on the bottom of the oven.
We booked the Manor Cottage (2) for an overnight, the kitchen has all you need, small table for six which the cottage sleeps but we were only two. There is a hot tub in the garden which we used, a lovely treat. Beds comfy, fluffy towels and well equipped bathroom and shower room. There is no sitting room, it is a double bedroom. Would be ideal if attending a wedding at Thornton Manor or nearby. Enjoyed the quiet location and the grounds are stunning to walk around.
