We stayed in 5 hotels during our stay in Japan. This one was a disappointment. We got attitude from the staff. The rooms reeked of smoke. When I went down to exchange my room I was told the place was sold out (didn't believe it). Rooms were your typical tiny rooms and old-fashioned. Yes, the rooms were cheap, but I would have to place this hotel way below a Motel 6. Our visit was before the pandemic so masks and hand sanitizers were not required.

Very good hotel, great value for money. The location is alright, about 10 minute walk to a metro stop. The service was great, with room cleaning everyday. Would recommend this hotel if you just need a good and cheap place to sleep, whilst exploring Tokyo.

In 2001, my first trip to Japan, I stayed in this Asukusa hotel (different management—then called the “Seventh Sky”) and had a memorable (and romantic) two weeks because my “sweetie” was staying there with a group. Since then I’ve come to Tokyo often and stayed in more expensive hotels, but this time for a four-night stay I decided to stay in its successor, the Smile Hotel, as a bit of nostalgia. I don’t regret it. Although it’s been spiffed up, it looks much the same inside and out and brought back many nostalgic memories. It’s still a budget hotel with small plain rooms, but it is clean and quiet with a decent shower, bed, little fridge, and TV, and the A/C and wi-fi worked fine. It still only has one small elevator for 10 floors and and an opaque window, and you might want to bring an extension cord and a few extra hangers, but the price was right. It’s a short walk from the Ginza Line and the Asakusa Kannon Temple—and not far from the Tokyo Sky tower (tallest tower in the world).

This was our first hotel of many, as part of a trip taking in many cities of Japan. The room was quite small, very tight. Very little room between the beds and around the beds to walk around. We expected rooms to be small in Tokyo, but this was even smaller than I had imagined, LOL. We managed. The bathroom is quite small as well, and the whole room has plastic paneling so if your shower head sprays outside of the shower/tub area, it doesn't matter, LOL. You have to STEP UP to enter the bathroom, which I tripped on a million times because I'm not used to that. Our room faced the main road that the hotel is on, and was sometimes kind of loud when trucks, motorbikes or ambulance/fire went by, but otherwise not too bad. Small closet to hang up your clothes. Very little space to spread out, especially for two ladies with clothes, makeup and toiletries. I found my bed to be VERY firm. Too firm for my liking. It was like sleeping on a slab of concrete, LOL. The hotel staff was pretty friendly and spoke some English. Our room booking included buffet breakfast. This was our first experience with Japanese breakfast so we weren't sure what to expect. Let's just say, over our 16-day trip, that we learned that what was offered at this hotel was typical. Rice, fried chicken, tamagoyaki (egg omelette), salads. We enjoyed the buffet!! The location was a bit far from the subway station, a little further than I would have liked with luggage. But overall not a bad location as it is pretty close to the Tokyo Sky Tree tower and Senso-ji temple and Hoppy Street.
