Got up graded to a sister hotel across the village, Hotel Cooking & Nature. Didn’t like it. Not what we were after. Hotel was like a small shopping centre. Not what you expect in the mountains. Very let down.
We loved the location of this guesthouse. It is a rural area, yet all the amenities you would need are available. We enjoyed taking a short walk in the morning to see the sheep, fruit trees and hayloft in the immediate area. The pool was the perfect size and had lounge chairs around the deck. There was a deck off the dining room which could be used for a picnic. The room was comfortable and looked out over the pool and had mountains in the background. If you are planning on staying here I would suggest you make reservations at Cooking and Nature Hotel for dinner as it might be difficult to find something in the area. The breakfast had a nice selection of breads, cheeses, meats, yogurt and pastry.
Casa dos Matos is a small hotel in the Village of Alvados, in central Portugal, near Fátima, Batalha and Alcobaça. Rita and Rui, a young couple that run "Casa dos Matos" and the almost next door hotel "Cooking and Nature", will welcome you with open arms. Altough small, you will be surprised by rooms' signatured décor: clean, chic and very creative. A fireplace in the living room adds charm to the property. A nice swimming pool will help your total relax. I would strongly recommend Casa dos Matos for young couples and honeymooners. The secluded atmosphere calls for love and romance. No telephones in the rooms allow total privacy, what may be a problem in case of emergencies. The beautiful nature of "Serra d'Ayres" and the caves nearby will encourage day trips and further contact with local environment. And finally, a few remarks: 1) A car is a must at all times - you are not at a walking distance from the major towns and attractions of the region; 2) Rooms and facilities are spread around the property, with many stairs and steps in between, what may result inconvenient on rainy days and for those with any kind of locomotion difficulty; 3) Wifi is rather a problem, available only in the living room; 4) Restricted menu at Casa dos Matos allow simple meals, but you can always attend the cooking classes at the twin hotel "Cooking and Nature", which are famous and a lot of fun always; 5) Bathrooms amenities would deserve a better selection, as well as a bigger mirror in the rooms would bring more comfort to guests. Casa dos Matos is run by a very nice Portuguese couple. It is the same people running the nearby located hotel; Cooking and Nature. Both places are great, and fulfill each other in a very nice way. The hotel is modern and innovative, while Casa dos Matos is calm and hospitable. We loved the pool area, the rooms, the village and the people. Explore the mountains around by food. Or do as we did; a cooking class in Cooking and Nature. What a great experience in amazing surroundings. No wonder this place won Revelation of the year in Portugal, by the national newspaper Expresso.
Casa dos Matos lived up to the great recommendations my wife and I saw on Tripadvisor. The setting is breathtaking, the Serra D'Ayres mountains of Portugal, the food was very good, and the staff/owners friendly and helpful. The region has many possible day trips- we were especially attracted to the local network of caves. The room was comfortable and clean, and our room had a small porch looking out on the pool. Our only problem was the bathtub next to the bed- this would not be a problem, except for the fact that we had a toddler with us, who proceeded to spend the weekend evel knieveling into the porcelain canyon (a great tub, quite deep). We will definitely return to Casa dos Matos and highly recommend it.
