The idea is there but plenty of work needs to be done. The rooms are small but very well laidout and comfortable. Nice open air shower and patio to sit and enjoy a sunset drink. The food was great at dinner but a lack of communication made breakfast just to be toast. The pool area still needs a lot of work as there was no shade or deck around the pool and the smell of stagnant water was appalling. The resort is quite far from anything in Kapitiya and you need a good 4x4 if you want to drive yourself.

Tucked away from the crowd, Sands is located on a private island in Kalpitiya. Since, there were many online reviews cautioning that it's tough to reach the place, I have requested an airport pick up and the owner promptly sent a classy 4WD SUV. The last 8-10 kilometers are driven on 4WD and it was thrilling - especially when driving through the sand and a vast ocean lies right next to the track!! The chalets are sea-facing and there is small lagoon inside the property. All the balconies face the ocean and breeze kept patting us day and night. Beach is small, serene and isolated with a unique charm. The staff can arrange Dolphin safaris and we were lucky see those magnificent beings in their natural habitat. Kumara, the cook, makes brilliant continental and local dishes! All in all, had a wonderful experience and many thanks to the owner and staff of Sands!! The staff goes beyond their duties with a smiling face to make guests feel at home. Hope the serenity lasts for some more years! If you're into 24/7 connectivity, check well before booking. It's a small island powered by generators, WiFi was not up and running in December 2016. They were planning to get a Dialog connection, not sure of the current status. If you're checking in during the day, I heard taking a boat from Kalpitiya town is fast than the land route.

Your very own private Eco lodge in the wilderness facing the Indian Ocean. Interior of the cottage like chalets made out of wood complete with open showers giving you a luxury camping experience..ideal place to get away from the high tech city. Excellent food with warm and friendly hospitality......kudos to resident manager Nimantha for making us feel at home all the time...keep up the good work..cheers...

With the lack of reviews,it was sort of gamble to select this place but eventually it led us to one of the greatest stays we ever had. Location is so unique that it's situated on the outer shore of Kalpitiiya peninsula facing Indian ocean. Take the road to left (Mohoththuwaarama Road) after passing Kalpitiya filling station which will lead you To Thorei Adi Jetty. There you can leave your car in a safe parking area and resort staff will accompany you across the lagoon by boat. There is seperate road from Kudawa leading to "Sands" for four wheel drive vehicles which you need to clarify with the "Sands" staff. After getting down from boat, you have to travel another few kilometers by jeep. This was sort of a Safari ride where you can witness the true beauty of Lagoon environment."Sands Kalpitiya is loacted in the area called KeeriMundalama which is miles away from human habitats. It's so unique locationwise, your challets are sanwiched in between Indian Ocean and Dutch bay lagoon. We booked one of the chalets on full board basis. All chalets are located near a small canal extending from lagoon which is right under your balcony. It seemed like these canals act as a nursery for little fish as many were freely swimming around. Chalet was a single airconditioned room which was comfortable, clean and simple.Bath room is located outside and was in good condition. You can have a morning dip in shallow safe sea.Beach was exquisitely lonely and beautiful. We had a walk along the shore to the narrowest part of peninsula where a thin strip of sand dune seperates the lagoon from ocean. It's possible to travel to Uchchimunei which is the tip of the peninsula but you will need a four wheel ride(which we didn't have :( Don't forget to have a walkaround the surrounding area along the marshy footpath leading to the Dutch church. Better to walk in early morning or late eveningbecause scorching sun and sands will make your walk a hell ride. It's possible to make this a pit stop to Wilpattu NP as they provide boat rides straight across lagoon to newly opened Eluwankulama entrance Food was good.Mr.Nimantha and co were very helpful and they tried their best to make our stay comfortable. As a whole Sands Kalpitiya was an ideal hideout in Kalpitiya peninsula where you can relax while being submerged to the lagoon flora and fauna

This is a quite a new place which has been opened 03 months back. Went with a bunch of friends. This place has 05 chalets and two rooms. We got 04 of the chalets. The chalets are pretty simple and nice with a beautiful view of the lagoon and overlooking the beach. Such cozy place to chill. Since this is located at an isolated area, its very calm and peaceful. Getting here is quite a hassle due to terrible roads. If you got a proper 4x4 vehicle you could get to the hotel by your vehicle or else you need to get to the kudawa jetty, park your vehicle at a nearby secure park and hopped to the boat which is provided by the hotel. It is about a 10/15 minutes ride and then you will be taken to the hotel on a shuttle either by a cool tractor or a jeep. The staff is very friendly and very helpful. The chef is nice too, he would prepare according to your needs. Although its less variety of dishes to choose from the food is really good. The price is reasonable too. They have a private beach were you could catch an amazing sunset. They also arrange boats for dolphin watching. Overall its an amazing place to chill with a bunch of people. Although they have only 05 chalets and two rooms, the area is big enough to wander.
