We booked 9 nights at KiteWorldWide lodge on the Kalpitya Lagoon in Sri Lanka and we were not disappointed. We were learning (intermediate so had done a bit before) but this is a perfect location for learning and for those more experienced. All levels of ability were represented as were ages (from 21 - 66). Bjorn and Toni were great as were all the local staff who were so thoughtful and kind. The nice thing about the way it works here, that we hadn't really realised beforehand is that everyone eats together. It is nicely social and those who are kitesurfing share tips, some partners who aren't themselves kitesurfing still enjoy the place. The rooms are nice, the water very warm in both the pool and the lagoon. It is the first time we have not needed a wetsuit.

Room Tip: We tried both the lagoon rooms and the pool rooms. Both were fine, but on balance we preferred...

I had a wonderful time with Kite World Wide Sri Lanka.... I had the lower level room with the view of the Lagoon. I was there for 8 days and had wind every day. They had air con, and mosquito nets .... never had problems with my room at all. They don't have warm water but it is so hot one doesn't really need it. I loved the overall experience... the food was great... I'm allergic to gluten and the cooks went out of their way to provide for me. The staff were very friendly and interest in their guests. The kiting was wonderful.... out to the spot at 9:30 and back at 4:00 and wind all the time. For kiting it was really really wonderful- I travelled alone and met great people. The way the Sri Lanka unit is structured it really generates a great sense of togetherness. As a female traveling alone I felt safe and cared for.

The hotel didn’t have the standard they promised. You can book the hotel on booking.com for a quarter of the price they charge you. I had to sue kiteworldwide before I got back part of the money I spent.

After having traveled with KWW to several destinations and been satisfied every time, this was a disaster. The KWW's website was far from the truth, the promised facilities didn't exist, our premium room had a leakage in the bathroom that wasn't fixed during our 2 week stay, and both an instructors and a students were taken to hospital as there were stingrays at the kite spot... The website claimed one could kite directly in front of the hotel but the spot was terrible. This meant everyone was taken to another spot on a 30min tractor ride, and that spot was just a tiny shed on the beach with not enough chairs for everyone. Sitting cramped with everyone else in that shed waiting for the wind and getting bit by sand flies was below the standard of every other kite spot I have visited. The food delivered for lunch sometimes wasn't enough for everyone and at two times they forgot to bring water. We paid over EUR50k (excluding flight), and was offered only EUR250 in compensation, with poor excuses from KWW. They will close down this kite spot, but still dint offer any meaningful money back although our holiday was ruined. There are several other travel agencies, do not choose KWW.

Kite World Wide was unscrupulous with us – we feel robbed by them. The hotel failed to provide the bare minimum, like electricity and running water. They overcharged us (twice as much as other guests). They falsely advertised their offerings. They do not use standard hotel business practices, like providing a refund for early check-out, which in our case was necessitated by their hazardous hotel conditions and a lack of running water and electricity. Their customer service was exceptionally slow (it took four weeks for them to respond to – and deny - my refund request) and lacked any element of care, concern or regard for customers. They lack basic business ethics. Having traveled extensively throughout the world, this was by far the worst and most shocking hotel experience we’ve ever had. They way they treated us, it makes me wonder if these people are crooks. Here are just some of the problems we experienced with Kite World Wide and our stay at their Sri Lanka hotel: Electricity. Multiple times, we were without electricity for many hours at the resort. Part way through our stay, the power went out in our building at 2am, and with it, the ceiling fans and A/C in our rooms. Our room was sweltering and we were eaten alive by mosquitos; sleep was impossible for everyone in our building. There was no employee on site to help, so we stumbled around in the dark looking for a fix. The next morning, the manager couldn’t get anyone out to fix the problem and didn’t know when it could be repaired. (The previous week, guests were without power and water for more than 48 hours). Running water and flushing toilets. Multiple times, we were without water at the resort; we weren’t even able to flush our toilet. That is quite unpleasant, not to mention unsanitary. Air conditioning. We booked an air conditioned unit, but the air conditioner was unable to cool the room. Hot water. Our room was supposed to have hot water, but was only capable of getting lukewarm. Safety. There were no bug-screens in the windows or mosquito nets provided. There were giant wasps, spiders and other insects in our room, and we were devoured by mosquitoes. As previously mentioned, there were no staff members on site to deal with a power/water outage at 2am, which left several of us guests without anyone to help. Cross-ventilation. Due to the layout of the room and windows, there is no cross-ventilation in the rooms. When the power went out and the fan was not functioning, our room became a sauna. False advertising. The Kite World Wide website and marketing materials falsely claimed advanced kiteboarders could kite right from the hotel. Upon arrival, the hotel manager and kiteboarding instructors informed us that due to the thick sea grass, shifty winds and shallowness of the water behind the hotel, launching from there was not possible; my husband and I verified this. (They have since updated their website about this; but that didn’t do us any good since we booked our stay with them based on their falsely advertised claim.) Terrible food. Their website promised “delicious and exotic food” in our room/board price, but what was delivered was overcooked, flavor-deprived, repetitive, very basic. Grilled chicken and fish were charred tough and dry, “salads” were a few slices of tomato and cucumbers, and we were served the same bland squash curry and rice every day during either lunch or dinner. I imagine prisoners are served better food. Overcharging. We were charged twice as much as other guests. Literally two times as much. Unbelievable. Lack of business ethics and customer service. After the power and water went out at 2am and we were eaten by mosquitoes during a thoroughly unpleasant sleepless night, when the manager arrived in the morning, we immediately informed him that we could not stay there unless the power and water were restored – conditions were unbearable. At 5pm that day, it still wasn’t fixed and he could not tell us when it would be restored, so we checked out so we could take a shower, use the toilet and get some much-needed sleep. I immediately requested a refund for the rest of our stay (which we had prepaid), and for the previous sleepless night. He told me to contact the company via email, which I did immediately, and decided to ask for a full refund since our stay was not what they promised it would be and was quite awful. Erik Weber responded and said it would take 2-4 weeks to investigate and respond to my refund request. After four weeks, his unbelievable response was to offer a refund of roughly 10% of the total amount we paid, saying that they couldn’t offer more since my husband and I “left the lodge immediately, effectively giving us improper time to react to your complaint.” (First off, no, we left 10 hours after we complained about the lack of electricity and water. Second, they could not tell us when it would be restored. Third, it’s unbelievable they expected us to stay there in those conditions.) I've never felt so ripped off before. Kite Worldwide really ruined our vacation to Sri Lanka.
