I am surprised at the number of five/four star reviews for this hotel. We stayed in the Christmas period with Canterbury travel. The hotel is perfectly adequate and the staff all very nice but I would class as solidly three star and in need of some updating/refurbishment and better organisation of the food offered. To be clear this in no way spoiled our holiday which was fantastic. On the Canterbury trip you mainly use the hotel just as a base and are are out and about on activities most of the day. Also to be clear, the location is such that if you want to stay there, I think this is probably the only hotel so it’s not like you can upgrade to the five star next door! The main two detractors for me were the food and the room. The food is a fairly small buffet - dinner generally comprised of a very small salad section, one choice of soup (plus bread) and then the hot counter would be one meat option, one veggie option, one load of veg, a grown up potato option and chips. I didn’t feel they really had a good sense of what kids eat in terms of your basic appeal to everyone. Particularly as everyone at this hotel is on the “search for Santa” and thus every family had under 10s with them. You’d expect stuff like plain pasta, margerita pizza, some plain veg like carrots or broccoli, sweetcorn, chicken nuggets. It’s not really hard (or I would have thought, expensive). Even grated cheese to give option of making a cheese sandwich. We had six lunch/dinner meals at the hotel and only one of them had pasta as an option. One had nuggets. No pizza and no plain veg. The meat mains were generally heavily sauced and not particularly kid friendly. Our kids mainly subsisted on chips and cucumber and they’re not the kind of kids who go for chips first. There was fruit every day for dessert and some biscuits/cakes. The adult selection was ok but they must have had meatballs at least 3 times out of 6 meals and some of the vegetarian options were a bit random. There was bubble and squeak one day, it was clearly fried up from yesterdays not eaten veg. So if you have fussy children, just be prepared. The breakfasts were better with hot eggs, sausages, porridge and a cereal bar, yogurt, fruit etc. plus toast and pastries. It’s help yourself to water and tea/coffee at all meals. Juice also at breakfast. On the rooms, we had a family room on floor 3 (which is actually the first floor as floor 2 is ground and floor 1 is the basement). It was actually a mezzanine with two singles downstairs and three singles up in a loft bit. I hadn’t realised this was the set up - I knew we were all in same family room and assumed kids would be on pull out sofa bed etc. Bathroom is downstairs. The stairs to the mezzanine were extremely steep and whilst there was a gate of sorts at the top, it didn’t lock or snap shut in anyway so could easily we pushed open. We weren’t comfortable letting our four year old sleep up there alone - if he’d woken needing the loo or being disorientated/wanting us there was no way he’d manage the stairs in semi darkness. So it meant one of us had to sleep up with them every night. Neither of us wanted to sleep up there (and it wasn’t as comfy up there) and we didn’t get particularly great sleep. Friends there with us said they had to sleep with their bathroom light on and door slightly open to give some kind of lighting so their kids could navigate the stairs if needing the loo (their youngest is 7). There were no lamps or any other way to give lighting needed without full brightness and the stairs were too steep in my view for any child to navigate in darkness. So that wasn’t ideal. The room was clean but dated. The bathroom was small - really small shower cubicle. Hard to really get towels dry as no real hanging space. There was a small drying cupbaord (I assume more for wet gloves etc) but there should really be room to hang towels up. The daily room service just emptied the bins, they didn’t make beds or freshen towels (we were fine with this). Otherwise, the room did have a kettle and there was powdered milk, coffee and tea. There was a mini fridge but we didn’t use it. Also a hair dryer provided. Generally enough space to push bags/luggage our way. On a positive note, the staff were all friendly. There is a small gift shop on-site and a bar where kids are welcome. Drinks are expensive but it is Finland, everything was expensive. The restaurant staff were helpful and refilled things quickly. The receptionists were friendly. There is room downstairs to leave your snow suits and boots if you don’t want them in room. There is no left luggage facility but this was dealt with for us by Canterbury travel picking luggage up early and leaving it on coach. The pool was good for kids, they really liked it - it’s got a bubbles bit and some jets. Also a sloping floor so our 4 year old could stand up in the shallows. There is a little hot tub too. It’s also of course in a beautiful location which is why it probably does so well! There is a gift shop opposite and a couple of local restaurants. A small supermarket too. There are complimentary sledges to borrow outside the hotel. It’s near a lake which has a nice lit up trail around it that we walked at night, doable with kids as it’s probably only 2/3km. You can sledge in some parts here too. (You can’t really see the lake much - it’s got trees around and the path then goes round the trees). There’s also a field nearby which seemed to be the spot people went to try see northern lights. One or two people on our trip did get some photos of them, though it did require having the alert app on your phone and going out late/as it flashed up. …
Stayed here from 28th Dec until 2nd Jan 2023 as part of a 6 night break with Canterbury Travel. Canterbury were fab and couldn't fault them at all...! Room was great,,,, quiet, suite with the sauna, lots of space and good kitchen facilities. We paid extra for an Amethyst suite and it was well worth it. Spa was lovely to be able to attend when needing to kill an hour or two. We had breakfast and evening meal included.... very poor overall. Breakfast was ok.... bacon, pastries and a waffle maker that took forever! Breakfast is a free for all. On 1 day it was so busy it put us off for the rest of the week. TIP; take the bacon / bread up to your room to heat under the grill and enjoy a hot bacon sarnie !! We also took jam to our room on day 1 and enjoyed croissants in the room daily. Dinner POOR... regardless of what day, dinner was limited to say the least. 4 / 5 out of 10. Sometimes the waiting staff were fantastic removing used plates quickly and on other days plates remained for the whole meal... really hit and miss. Alcohol extremely expensive .. beer was terrible, do yourself a favour and have a detox. Don't get me wrong ... we enjoyed our holiday but the food really was the difference between a review that was 8/9 and 4/5.…
The hotel is a little dated and they need to think about food aimed at children as I’m sure there’s not many who just want meatballs and chips for dinner every night the breakfast is great loads of choice and good quality. The enthusiasm of all the staff involved in making a magical trip could not be faulted. The reindeer trip was expensive and charging for drinks when we went in for a warm up is a rip off. Feeding the reindeer was much more fun and the children seemed to enjoy that but more than sitting in a sleigh plodding along a track, our children wanted a bit of speed. Check out other companies who do trips there. Much cheaper than TUI and no where near as busy. We booked a husky ride independently and there was only a few of us there so we had more time to play with the dogs. The ski resort up the road is good value for money and the rings and sledges were lots of fun.…
Stayed here last week as part of Canterbury Travel Magical Interlude package. Good points: Staff were friendly and helpful. Wasn't too much choice at breakfast/dinner but it was very tasty, especially for buffet food. Swimming pool was nice to use after a long day on excursions. However the hotel is let down by the decor. The hallways are dated and dirty. At one point some of the wall fell down outside our room! The room was slightly better but even then the shower leaked everywhere and we could have done with some more storage with all our layers/snowsuits. Overall we were happy as we wasn't in the room very much being out all day with Canterbury Travel but would be annoyed if we had stayed longer.
The Luosto Hotel is absolutely fantastic. We stayed for 3 nights in a family sauna room. It had a sofa bed for the kids, 2 single beds pushed together for my wife and I, with a consatina separater, which was nice to have some privacy. It had a kitchenette with cooker, dishwasher, fridge freezer, and all cooking equipment. It also had a toilet and a separate shower room / sauna. If you can, I would definitely recommend getting the sauna room as we used it every night - going from 90C inside, to -29C outside is very relaxing! Very easy to use as well, and full instructions left in the room. One tip I would say - DO NOT bring winter pyjamas! The rooms are very warm - we even turned our heating down the first hour we were in there. The breakfast was great - loads of choice, hot and cold, fruit, cereal, bacon, eggs, meats, cheese, bakery goods etc. Labels on everything for vegitarian, vegan and gluten free. We went half board so also had dinner included. Dinner isn't too bad, but not as good as breakfast. Not as much choice, but my family always found something to eat - salmon, stew, curry, salads, chips, sausages, fruit and desserts, are the usual selection. The hotel also has a bar, where I would 100% recommend the hot chocolate! You can also get food in there, but we never did. We went with TUI, so we also had a festive dinner, which again was nice, very Christmas Dinner themed, and then had a quiz, dance party and fireworks (literally 3 minutes just to warn you!) I normally hate organised fun, but it was actually really nice, and the kids loved it. We also went in the pool, which was nice - simple enough with a jacuzzi, and some jets throughout the pool area. Just remember to pick up the locker key from reception in exchange for your room key card so you're not going up and down the stairs like I did. Location wise it's brilliant - shops and cafe about 100m across from the hotel, with the ski resort about a 10 minute walk (follow the road right as you leave the hotel and keep going - you won't miss it). The ski resort is great for kids - we have a 4 and 8 year old and they have a small slope for sledging and a short tube run. Sledges are everywhere in Luosto, but notably just outside the hotel, so we never struggled to pick one up. The lake is fantastic to see the northern lights, but we had a walk there for the fire hut to roast marshmallows (bring your own). It's only about a 10 minute walk (turn left out the hotel until you hit the layby and there is a path in the top left corner for the lake). Overall, we would 1000% come back to Luosto and the Luosto Hotel - great location, fantastic rooms, and very friendly staff.…
We have just returned from a 3 night stay in a log cabin part of the Luostotunturi Hotel. We travelled with TUI and had an amazing time. The cabin was small and basic but everything we needed. It was very warm and log fire was a lovely touch. It was nice to have the cabin to go back to when we were cold and tired after a fun day in the snow. The main hotel was about a 10 minute walk away from the cabin we were in. This was difficult when the snow was heavy but worth it. The food in hotel was nice enough, not a lot of options for the evening meal but still nice. We couldn’t fault TUI, there was always a friendly elf (rep) around to help. We booked a reindeer sleigh ride via TUI for our free day and this was amazing. We fed the reindeers then went through the forest on a sleigh for about 20 minutes, yes it was expensive but well worth the memories. Everything was organised very well and it was nice to have free time to play in the snow with the sledges the hotel provide. My only criticism would be that 50 minutes is not long enough at Santas village on the way home, you’re also told to be back at the bus in good time so it’s more like 40 minutes there. Santas village seemed very commercial though and I think staying in Luosto gave us the real Lapland experience. Truly magical ❄️…
We stayed on hotel for two nights at our familys Lapland-Karelia summertour, and we loved it! We had fantastic dinner at the hotels restaurant both days. We ate pizzas at our first day, and burgers at second day, and we can give full five stars for each one of them. Staff is professional and friendly at the restaurant and at reception. Breakfast was also wery good and tasty, with multiple options to choose from.
I stayed two nights at a log cabin with my dog so I don’t have experience about the standard hotel rooms. Cabin was clean and relatively comfortable but outdated and therefore, I felt it was slightly overprized. The kitchenette and the sauna should be updated along with the furniture and curtains to bring the room up to usual Lapland Hotels’ look and feel. Breakfast was relatively good with enough choises but the breakfast room itself again needs modernisation. It felt more like a school lunch hall.
The hotel room was unclean and the daily cleaning was lousy. The bed in the room was also lousy. Anyway, the room was left for the last Millennium. The staff was arrogant and not very service minded. The customer needs were not suffisiently taken into account. The only positive thing was the breakfast.
Very nice hotel, comfortable beds, big room, everything very good organised, dinner and breakfast perfect. Good control concerning the Covid rules. Staff very friendly. Location very beautiful. We had a room at the first floor, so we had a little terras, and view in the wood. We were there with a group travel from the ANWB.
