**daughter writing review on behalf of father who stayed 2 nights**
Room cost 300+ a night in September but watch out there is no lift so two flights of stairs needed navigating. No bedrooms in the downstairs. No one offered to carry suitcases either (for a 63 and 75 year old)
Went out for the day, came back 3:30pm and wanted to have a nap. But the room service had not been so we had to make the bed ourselves.
Then small things like only one suitcase holder in the room, no flowers in the room, understocked bathroom (no tissues) etc, considering the cost of the room was disappointing.
Note that the food was superb! Staff not unfriendly but not warm either. Final bill for 2 nights was over 800 euro but when I paid noone said Thank you, come again or anything like that

We began our two night stay with a nice welcome and were shown to our ground floor Deluxe room. These kingsize bedrooms have doors to the garden with windows that can open above them.
Initially the room smelled stuffy and as if milk had been spilled recently but no windows were opened prior to our arrival to air the room, which you would expect., especially on a warm day. The bathroom was large with luxury toiletries, but a bowl of fruit or some snacks would have been appreciated to go with the Nespresso machine in the room. There was no kettle for making a cup of tea.
Being in a rural location and a stone building, phone 3G/4G is patchy, but so is the hotel wi-fi, so if you had some work to do online it's not great. Some small investment in a mesh wifi system would solve the problem. There are basic TV channels, but no movie channel/Netflix app on the TV for streaming, which you might like if you just want to chill for a while.
Dinner in the bar was good but lacked a "foodie experience". The junior staff rushed it, as if they had a task to do rather than focus on the guest experience. The staff are pleasant and friendly which does make up for their lack of customer experience and training.
Our dinner in the dining room the next evening was far better than the bar and the food is as you'd expect in a fine dining restaurant, with several wow moments. The cheese dessert needs to be reworked as a single chunk of blue cheese without crackers isn't that appealing.
Breakfast on both days was adequate and made to order, but lacked a wow factor that we were expecting given Dunbrody's reputation for food. The morning taff seemed a bit asleep at times, either forgetting things or bringing the wrong order and even marmalade had to be requested. Coffee was Nespresso - not great for a foodie hotel. I've had better at a barista coffee truck.
There are plenty of spaces in the hotel to relax, either the bar or the lovely garden. We also took in the coastal loop walk that is mentioned a lot, but it's poorly signposted as it's not part of the hotel grounds.
In the evening, you can sit outside and there are heaters, but the hotel don't make much effort to create ambience, e.g. with lighting to make it appealing as a comfortable space to have a drink.
We did also notice the bed wasn't properly turned down in the evening, nor were the toiletries replaced.
Overall, it fels like they are trading on the Dundon reputation for great food, but there isn't enough services elsewhere in the offering to justify the price. Simple changes and attention to detail could make it better.

Dinner, bed, and breakfast here were a real treat. The owners Kevin and Catherine Dundon ensure that all guests were welcome, comfortable, and relaxed in the unique settings offered by Dunbrody House Hotel. In these terrible times, the cleanliness, space, and obvious attention to detail by the staff ensured that we felt comfortable. Dinner and breakfast were excellent and proof of the hotel's reputation. The bedroom was very comfortable.

We recently stayed at Dunbrody House and to say it was disappointing is an understatement. The food at best is average and service is not much better.
We acknowledge that businesses are trading differently due to Covid, but not having our room cleaned for 3 days is questionable.
Housekeeping needs to be improved as finding items in your room belonging to previous guests is not what you expect.
Overall, it is not good value for money, especially the food which was not only unimaginative but in some cases very poorly executed.

Response from Catherine Dundon, Owner at Dunbrody Country House Hotel
Responded 16 Aug 2020
Dear Uber-Foodie Thank you for staying with us recently. We're sorry that everything did not meet your expectations. On check in we are advising each and every guest that as we are strictly adhering to Covid-19 prevention protocols that there is no housekeeping service once a guest has checked in. We are very happy to provide fresh towels, extra pillows/blankets/toiletries etc to the door if required. That is simply a matter of calling us in Reception and we will arrange straight away. If a guest really wants we are also very happy to provide a new room to check into and so have a fully freshly-cleaned room. Most guests are not only happy with this but prefer to know that nobody will enter their room which has been fully sanitised pre-arrival. Sorry too that dinner did not live up to your hopes. We do try to check with all our diners that they are enjoying everything as we would much prefer to offer an alternative if something is not being enjoyed. If you did not feel comfortable advising us on the night we do apologise now for your disappointment. Thank you for your stay, hopefully we might see you again and renew your good opinion of Dunbrody Best Wishes til then Catherine, Kevin & the team

My friends and I had not seen each other for several months and as one had turned sixty earlier in the year and had just had major surgery, we were looking forward to spending the time together catching up. Hence the choice of a lodge at €350 per night.
From the moment we entered it, we were so, so disappointed. The photos on their website are obviously another lodge on the estate. From the mould on the freezer and the shower curtain, to the previous tenants’ crumbs in the toaster and the dead flies, Ivy growing through the window frame, damp walls, tattered curtains etc. we felt a sense of gloom.
As one friend was, literally, just post op and facing further treatment, we felt it would be unsafe for her to stay there as it certainly was not sanitised as per regulations so we requested assistance from reception. We were met with a blanket “All rooms are booked, and you are free to leave”.
The receptionist said that there was nothing she could do except ask housekeeping to recheck the lodge and she was not able to sew torn curtains.
Suddenly, within a matter of minutes, a room in the hotel for our friend had materialised. Rather than upset everyone’s mini break, my other friend and I decided, begrudgingly, to endure the lodge.
The food was fine, if you love meat. (Rabbit, venison, foie gras, type of meat) Seafood was extremely limited and everything costs extra, water, coffee, juice with breakfast, a croissant (breakfast for 3 came to €70).
On check out, we were presented with the bill and offered no discount for our sub-standard lodge accommodation. We queried this and the receptionist said that she was not in a position to give discounts as it was “Above her paygrade”. As both the owners were nearby, (although never appeared) we requested that she find someone who had the authority. Sometime later, she returned with an offer of small discount and told us to take it up with the owners via email.
So, as you can see, things were managed quite badly from the beginning. We quite understand that the receptionist is new to the job and is still learning. But a little further training in diplomacy and a direct line with someone in authority, would not go amiss.
On a lighter note, the young staff were excellent, and Patrick is a credit to the place. An absolute gem of a gentleman.
We did contact the owner on our return home and she said she would refund a voucher we used for part payment immediately, that was 12 days ago and it has not appeared as yet.

Lots of small things added up to ruin our stay. The hotel lazily blames COVID policies for a multitude of unacceptable behaviours that I would not expect from a hotel of this level. I will preface my review by stating that I stayed in other hotels this week, we were welcomed to each of those and there were none of the service failings that we experienced here.
Dunbrody was the only hotel that doesn’t provide a daily room clean. Apparently it is hotel policy. Our room was cleaned in every other hotel that we stayed in. in Dunbrody towels were not replaced, cups not changed and beds were not made. After asking for the room to be made up we were left with a condescending voice mail inviting us to take it up with the proprietor! They did then subsequently clean the room, but the damage was done with the voicemail.
In the restaurant there was only one A4 paper menu on each table, when we asked for a second menus we were told it was “ one menu per couple” and we couldn’t have a second one. The waitress then simply walked away, no discussion. I was stunned by the ignorance.
The first night I ordered a craft cider which was clearly flat and off. It tasted of ink, it was so off. Rather than simply replace it I had to have a debate with two bar men on it. In fairness they did eventually replace it, but I would have expected in a high class hotel that it would have been done with out question.
All of these things might sound like small things, but when you charge high prices, the service needs to be impeccable, with the customer treated with respect, when simple requests are made.
The food is nice but I can get good food elsewhere and have a relaxing time uninterrupted by bad service.

Visited in September and stayed in the Lodge right across from Reception and beside the cookery school. I'm not going to go on about this too much but all I can say is it should not be rented out. There is a serious amount of work that needs attending to such as the damp the paint falling off the walls, the general wear and tear of the furniture and windows. I don't care if a property is €350 a night or €50 a night (it was €350 and 2 couples stayed. I know it could have been 3 but the other bedroom you could not sleep in as the window did not close) it should be fit for purpose. Also during these COVID times the place was not cleaned properly before we arrived.
The food was not anything to write about the dinner choice was very limited, and the portions were beyond minute. The breakfast that was €25 per person extra was the smallest breakfast I have had in a hotel with very little choice.
I'm sorry writing this review but felt it had to be said. For the money that is being charged its not up to standard.

I would love to be writing a positive review of Dunbrody House as we met one or two staff who were just fabulous but after our experience I feel like I should warn people. Everyone understands that sometimes expectations are not met but its how you deal with this that shows a good customer experience and unfortunately this is where Dunbrody House fell down hugely. Our concerns were initially dismissed when we called after checking in, on check out we werent asked how our stay was and when we aired our disappointment with the cleanliness and quality of the accommodation we were met with defensiveness and when we sent an email to detail our complaint we were told the owner would reply as soon as possible, over two weeks later we have not received a reply.
We booked a two night stay for New Years's Eve in the two bed self catering lodge. The information was scant on the website but the reviews were good. After booking we found out that we had no dining option for NYE as the only option was to go with an eight course gala dinner and as we have a young baby that wasn't an option, and this wasnt clear when we booked, much like the crucial details about the lodge the website failed to tell us this before we booked. We were looking forward to the spa, which was closed and there were other facilities listed which weren't available. So before we arrived it wasn't a great start. When we arrived at the lodge it turned out that the scant detail on the website wasnt accurate, there was not a fully equipped kitchen (no dishwasher), there was not a separate living room (its actually the hallway), the lodge is a long walk down a dark uneven lane from the hotel and its beside a very loud and noisy road. The bathroom is downstairs and absolutely freezing, you have to walk through the kitchen (which doesnt have blinds and is beside the road) to use the shower. The cleanliness of the house left a lot to be desired, there was a lipstick stain on one of the glasses and the windows were covered with cobwebs and dead flies, the towels had threads hanging off them and even the most basics such as instructions on how to use the heating were missing. We went for dinner on New Years' Day, the food was fine but not worth the price and once again we were never asked how our food was. I ordered smoked duck for main course, it was no more smoked and the veg was hard. Breakfast was nice but very slow as only one staff member seems to take food orders which makes the whole experience very slow. Overall our stay was overpriced and disappointing, but most disappointing of all was the attitude of management which came across as arrogant in their lack of willingness to acknowledge or respond to feedback.

We arrived to a professional rather than a warm welcome and were shown to our room which was small & somewhat dark with tired and unattractive furniture & views that looked out to ‘Kevin’s Studio’. The bathroom whilst newly refurbished was small with little or no place to store toiletries other than on the floor. In addition, shampoo and conditioner was not replaced during our stay. Wifi connection in the room was somewhat erratic.
The hotel advertises an upgrade subject to availability for Blue Book voucher holders. We advised at the time of booking that we would be utilising Blue Book gift vouchers but despite the hotel not being full (as confirmed by staff) upgrades were not made available to us.
The public areas of the hotel have been tastefully refurbished and offer pleasant spaces to relax, read a book or enjoy a drink in the bar. As the weather was terrific during our stay, we enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the garden & terrace where we had pre-dinner drinks. Dinner in the beautifully refurbished dining room on both nights was most enjoyable and the staff was professional, friendly & attentive. The menu is diverse and the wine list is extensive and offers some well chosen varietals. Breakfast was equally good but the hotel could upgrade its coffee offering from Nespresso to barista made coffee.
Dunbrody House generates a great deal of publicity but in our experience doesn’t always compare favourably to many of its Blue Book competitors on product offering, it’s attention to detail, ambiance and guest relations in some areas. It was overall a pleasant stay but missed the mark in a number of key areas and regrettably didn’t fully meet our expectations given it’s price point.

This was my second stay at Dunbrody Country House and it was such a wonderful experience. I spent two nights in August with my daughters celebrating a birthday so I knew I wouldn't be disappointed on my second visit. On arrival you are made feel so welcome, Rebecca and Tearena make you feel like you are the only guests. On both occasions the rooms were so comfortable and clean with plenty of tea and coffee provided, the cleaning staff are constantly on duty ensuring the rooms are spotless. Dinner in the Harvest Room restaurant is an amazing experience as is dining in the bar but in a more casual manner - the Chowder is to die for! We were delighted to ring in the New Year at Dunbrody Country House and enjoyed the company of some wonderful people also staying at the hotel along with our wonderful hosts Kevin and Catherine, it was a great celebration. Breakfast is a real treat and you are spoiled for choice, you will not be disappointed with anything on this menu. Walks around the grounds are highly recommended to fully appreciate your surroundings, especially the coastal walk. Thank you to everyone at Dunbrody Country House Hotel - I just can't wait for my next visit.
