We spent 2 nights in the hotel as a family of 5 last weekend. 3 children ages 10, 9 and 6.

I had stayed a few years ago with a friend and the bedroom had been very plush so I have to say the family bedroom was a little disappointing, blandly decorated, scratched furniture and some staining on the carpet. (Room 507). Having said that it was spotlessly clean, the beds were extremely comfortable and the bathrooms modern and immaculate.

The facilities were second to none, we did not leave the hotel at all, having 2 dinners and a lunch in the summit/Conall Cearnach and Kells bar. All food and drink was of very high quality and we were so relaxed and happy. The staff throughout are very attentive and friendly without being overbearing.

We used the leisure centre pool twice (we felt it could have been cleaner particularly the floors around the pool and in the changing rooms; both days they were visibly dirty with hair and grit underfoot). I felt there was no excuse for this at the minute when cleanliness should be a priority.

Having said that Covid guidelines were strongly highlighted throughout the hotel and we felt very safe. Obviously adherence differed between guests but the hotel seemed to be doing all it could and beyond that it is up to individuals to stick to the guidelines.

We used the driving range, tennis courts, par 3 golf course and mini golf. Kids loved it all, plenty to do and beautiful grounds. The one suggestion I would have is to include the mini golf in family stays as it was €20 for us, not a huge amount in itself but we spent a considerable amount of money in the hotel over the 2 days, as any family would of a similar size, and it would just be a nice gesture to include a round of mini golf for a family. Tennis was free as was the par 3 course which we really enjoyed. The games room was great entertainment, make sure to bring plenty of change!!!

Previous reviewers have mentioned the bar prices but we actually found them quite reasonable.

All in all as a family we had a really great stay. We would most definitely return in the future but would hope for a nicer room next time.

We stopped for lunch on the way home to Enniskillen. We decided to try the kells bar which is less formal than the main dining room. We all had soup to start, followed by prawn sandwich & salmon sandwich both very well priced at €10.50. Service was fast and the servers were extremely friendly. We filled out the covid contact tracing form and could see the servers sanitizing down the tables frequently. I think in the world we live in now, people are going to look for good covid measures, no avoiding it. Ian the Bar manager is a breath of fresh air and was very helpful and good humored. Only thing they don't serve chips which we found a bit strange as you can get in the golf club and other restaurant. The grounds of the hotel are magnificent and kept in great condition. Look forward to visiting again.

Myself, Husband and 9 year old spent 2 nights here as a base for the "Stairway to Heaven" hike.
The Hotel itself is beautiful and staff really friendly and helpful.
Prior to arrival i recevied an email with instructions to download the App to facilitate making bookings for Meals/Pool etc.
This was so handy and easy to use.

The rooms are spacious with 2 double beds and the bathroom has toiletries and a clever retractable washing line across the bath for wet swimwear. The room also has a TV/ hairdryer/ Iron/ Safe and Tea/Coffee supples and facilities.

There are 3 resturants (One was not open due to COVID and reduced guest numbers) we ate dinner both nights in the Summit Restaurant overlooking the golf course as i found this to be the less formal of the 2 and that was what we were looking for with a child in tow. The food was amazing and staff so lovely.

We ate Breakfast in the main resturant and they had the hot buffet counter set up for guests to queue and be served what they wanted and the continental table set up for self serve, there was a menu on the table for pancakes etc which you order from the server bringing teas/coffees, breakfast did not dissapoint,

The hotel has a leisure centre with Gym/pool, we used the pool on 3 occasions and used the App booking sytem, we got an hour slot which was plenty time with a max of approx 30 people in the pool at one time.
Changing rooms are spacious with showers (Bring own toiletries) and hairdryers and lockers (One Euro Coin required for locker) Towels are given at leisure centre reception on arrival at pool.

The Bar served light snacks however a reservation is not possible, it is first come first serve but we never had an issue getting a table.

The Hotel also has a Spa however we didnt visit and so cant comment.

An email was sent for self check in and check out to minimise time spent at desk.

Overall i was impressed with our stay and would absolutely stay again.

Seven of us popped in on Sunday 16th February for some food and a few drinks. We walked into the Kells bar to be ignored completely by most members of staff. By the time we got someone's attention and asked about sitting somewhere, she was very unhelpful and told us to find somewhere and pull tables together ourselves if we wanted to eat there. As someone who themselves has worked in the hospitality sector, I found this to be very bad for business, several members of staff willing to watch a lot of money walk out the door all because they simply can't say 'give me a minute, we' ll try and find you somewhere to sit'. We proceeded to walk over and found 3 small round tables and pulled them and the chairs together for us. It was about 10 minutes before we were approached by another member of staff who gave us menus and took our drinks order. We had decided to wait until 3pm before ordering food as before this, they only serve sandwiches and soup, which despite being a bar area, is still ridiculous for a Sunday! Between 2.15pm and 3pm we were approached by 4 different members of staff to take our order, to which each time we told them we were waiting. Such a shocking lack of basic communication between staff. At 3pm our order was taken promptly. I must say the way the food is carried out is great, all the dishes carried out on large trays meaning no one is waiting for the servers to run back and forth for the remaining dishes. However, when the food was being plated my partner had asked one of the girls for some vinegar and another pint, a normal enough request, but she merely shrugged him off and ignored this request. Another member of our party had also asked for another pint and he too was ignored. She may have just been a food runner and it may 'not have been her job' but she could have passed the message on to someone! On a side note, the food was delicious and plenty of it. Not badly priced, a little on the high side but not terrible. Just as we were finishing, a member of staff came along with the vinegar and said pint requested from earlier on. He apologised for the delay, this was not his fault, the message was not relayed to him. I caught his name badge and I believe he was conor. Conor was fantastic, very pleasant and plenty of common sense, something lacking with the rest of the staff. He was clued in and replaced water jugs when nearly empty, offered other drinks when glasses were empty and walked around with a smile on his face, which is more that could be said for the rest of the sour looking staff who clearly didn't want to be there! Our plates from the main course were taken, he left us with the dessert menus and continued to clear the rest of the plates, by the time the table was clear and he was back, we were ready to order dessert and coffees, which again, we're lovely. All in all, the place is spectacular and the food is tasty but due to the poor service and lack off attention from staff, I would not be back, nor would I recommend it to anyone! Staff training is definitely required! Unfortunately you cannot teach common sense.

Dear Reviewer. Thank you for your review and I am very sorry to learn of your dissatisfaction with your service experience in the Kells Bar on Sunday afternoon. I have discussed your experience with both our Quality Manager and Beverage Manager and we will revisit the importance of good customer interaction with all our team. I have viewed the camera footage and you were probably approached by several staff members as you were sitting with a menu closed in front of you on the table, which would have suggested to them that you were ready to order food. I hope you can appreciate given the size of the bar and number of staff it would not be feasible to communicate one customer's wish to wait before ordering their food to all the bar team. I am pleased to read your positive comments about Conor, I will pass this on to him. I am also pleased to note that Gosia our bar supervisor offered to take your order for your food in advance, so that it was served to you promptly at 3pm. Given this positive interaction with both Conor and Gosia I am disappointed to note that you would not return. Thank you for your feedback and I do genuinely hope that you will return in the future as we would welcome the opportunity to restore your faith in us. Kind regards, Tony Walker.

This review will have two parts.

Part One: Once again the hotel was great, staff very attentive, enthusiastic and friendly (Take note Redcastle Hotel Donegal). Covid-19 protocols everywhere, including hand sanitizer stations, screens, social distancing markers, PPE for staff and plenty of cleaning by staff throughout the hotel. These protocols gave us confidence and added to the comfort of our stay. The food in The Setanta Restaurant was fantastic as usual and couldn't be faulted, plenty of choice at breakfast (Orange Juice was great). Upgraded before arrival to a Junior Suite from a Superior Room, in hindsight we would probably not do this again as we like the floor to ceiling windows and the better soundproofing in the Superior Rooms.

Tony Walker, the staff are a credit to the Slieve Russell and made our stay. We will return in the near future.

Part Two: Talking about soundproofing we had Larry, Curly and Moe staying next door (hopefully these cretins are reading this and will recognise themselves), to be exact Larry and Curly were staying next door and Billy no mates Moe was staying in another room, (she must of drawn the short straw). The three classless ladies in question and I use the term ladies very very loosely sounded more like three witches with their loud cackling, laughing and banging until the early hours of the morning. Also when Billy no mates Moe banged the door it was like the Guards busting in when doing a raid.

We didn't know that Ireland's got Talent was taking place in Larry and Curly's room due to the dulcet tones of all three that got the local cats screeching, in fact the cats sounded better.

The best part of the trip was watching them check out still carrying their cake box for whatever they were celebrating and in a defacto way we were also celebrating watching them go.

One bit of advice for the selfish classless ladies:

Think about your behaviour and fellow guests who have also paid for a quiet trip away the next time you book in anywhere, because guess what it's not all about yourselves.

Just returned from a stay at the Slieve Russell, celebrating my birthday, the family got together. We have been going there for many years and it never disappoints. The staff are always friendly & helpful and go the extra mile to accommodate their guests. Food is consistently good with range of dining options. Leisure facilities Inc. swimming, tennis, golf, with par 3 and crazy golf courses and games room for junior members of the family. Lots of lounge space with social distancing for reading and the occasional family card game. (UNO is especially fun in the S.R.!) Rooms are impeccably clean and under the circumstances & in terms of Covid safety we felt totally comfortable, safe and relaxed, that especially goes for the grandparents in the family.
It has been a difficult time for the Hotel industry and we wish Tom and the team every success for the remainder of the season. They certainly deserve it.
Looking forward to a return visit soon. Rosemary and the McArdle Family.

We really enjoyed our stay at the slieve Russell hotel.Staff were very accommodating and helpful. Staff particularly helpful were Conor (the Kells bar) who served us lunch most days and Philip who welcomed us in the restaurant for our breakfast and Dinner. Another staff member who was so friendly was a young girl who cleaned our room on 7th floor but didn't catch her name. Would definitely come and stay here again.

A lovely hotel, grounds and very friendly staff.
The room was very spacious and near to reception and the pool. It would have been nice to have a plug beside the beds to charge your phone/ devices.
I would bring water bottles for the room as there is a water station down the hall but no jug provided. I would also bring plenty of snacks for kids as the vending machine we tried was out of order and there are no 'kiddie' snacks in the bar.
Unfortunately there were works going on (which we weren't aware of when booking) and noise like hammering and drilling which was uncomfortable. The bar was closed and instead there was a conservatory (near to the works).
We had a 4 year old boy with us. There was nothing for him to eat as all he wanted was chips but we would have had to book into the restaurant to buy him a plate.
It was snowing so we didn't venture out.
In the evening there was live music but by the time you finished dinner ,or rushed dinner, because seats were so limited, most residents I met had to sit in the hall to listen.
The pool was quite cool in temperature so we didn't stay long and they were grouting the showers which I thought should have been carried out in the evening instead.
There were so many kids staying but there was no club on for the midterm. There was a soft play area for babies/toddlers but in the games room nothing was free.
I would have liked to book a spa treatment which I normally would in every hotel we stay in, but everything was very expensive and there were no special offers for residents.

Having been to many spa hotels across Ireland,I was really looking forward to staying at the 4* Slieve Russel hotel which was booked as a birthday present to my partner on Sunday 19th January.

Positives - lovely location and surroundings for a walk. Pool was nice and clean, steam room and sauna spacious. Room was big (our room had 2 double beds).

Negatives - things quickly went downhill when we called into Kells bar in the hotel for a drink and lunch while watching the football. Tables covered in dirty dishes with staff uninterested in clearing them and cleaning the tables for other guests. We actually began to clear the dishes ourselves just to get a seat before a waitress did appear to take them. We came back down later for dinner at around 8pm. At this stage the place was quieter but again difficult to find a table that was clean and clear of dirty dishes. We ended up having to move dirty dishes from one table to another and move a load of chairs that had been put around a table just to get a space that we could enjoy dinner at. Waited around 20mins before a waiter appeared to take our drinks and food order. Place wasn’t even busy, just disinterested staff. We saw other guests standing around looking at dirty dishes on tables too trying to find themselves a table. Food was decent although our finished plates sat in front of us for close to half an hour before we decided we’d had enough of dirty dishes and cold food sitting in front of us and decided to pay at the bar and get out. Put us off sticking around for drinks.
Breakfast next morning was lovely, however when we were shown our table and told to go get our food, when we brought the food back staff had given our table to another couple. So we stood there with our plates of food and orange juice while another table was prepared.

I see my issues also being mentioned in other reviews but clearly staff are not being spoken to and trained. Service is so inattentive and staff so disinterested in doing the simple service things right and it really did leave a sour taste in our mouth. It’s really letting down this 4* hotel and was a disappointing night away for what was a special occasion.

We stayed overnight in the Slieve Russell.

The good and the bad...

There were good hygiene measures in place and we felt like the hotel were adherent to current guidelines.

We stayed in a superior room and it was very comfortable with a lovely view of the golf course. The flowers my partner ordered for me were really beautiful.

Staff throughout our entire stay were lovely. Particularly one of the female waiting staff in Kells bar who sought us another tablet away from a large rowdy group. The Espresso Martini's were really tasty.

The reason for the lower score is how poor the food was..for a 4* hotel the food was really some of the worst we have ever eaten in a hotel. We dined in the Conall Cearnach restaurant. My partner's prawn tasted like it was cooked with old oil and had absorbed this taste. My spring rolls looked and tasted like store bought frozen food. I received two tiny spring rolls for my starter. The salmon and duckling for the main were both tasteless and we were disappointed in the garlic potatoes and vegetables that also tasted as they were made from frozen produce. The vegetables were soggy. Dessert was much better including a nice chocolate fondant and cheesecake

The breakfast was ok but again generally tasteless however they catered for alternative milk including almond.

Overall I don't think we would stay here again because of the food quality and I think the hotel could consider the quality of their food as I think it's taking a hit at the expense of profit.

Children aren't allowed in the bar area after 10 pm as far as I know but there's a seating area (couches, armchairs, fireplace etc) just outside the bar, not the lobby but the other side, that allows children after 10 and you can bring drinks from the bar there! This is just my from experience, I'm not 100% on the actual policy!
