If you re heading down the garden route you MUST stop here ! (I repeat, MUST!) The location is very good and there s plenty to do around there. The only regret I have about this place is not having spent more time there. Definitely coming back in a future visit to South Africa !!!

Set in the most beautiful garden with the most scenic backdrop of rolling South African countryside this was an awesome place to chill and use as a base to explore the surrounding areas of Tsitsikamma national park etc. Rocky et al are great hosts and make you feel really at home. Well, Allix, what can I say except thank you? (and blush!) Probably the best thing about Rocky Road is that it feels really away from it all with peace and quiet, big skies and gorgeous surrounding countryside - and yet its only 25 minutes from the holiday and tourist playground of Plettenberg Bay. Thanx again!

Why do you think we call ourselves Rocky Road?! Its a way of notifying our guests in advance about the....um....rocky road. The owner's name is also Rocky, of course.... Glad you enjoyed your stay!

Rocky Road is a very nice place to stay. Mac is a very friendly guy who has great stories to tell and cooks awesome food. Furthermore, the 'tents' (which have a very comfortable bed) are nice and clean. Last but not least, do not forget to check the stars during the night. Stargazing in Rocky Road is amazing!

We used this backpackers as a base for exploring the Garden Route, and it was a last-minute booking so we took whatever we could get. Our log cabin room was small but the beds had thick blankets and heater blankets, which gave a sense of luxury anyway. The gardens were pretty, but the communal kitchen was a bit on the...

Thank you for your review and also for your constructive criticism. We do apologise that the kitchen was "on the dirty side". It is not easy to keep it spotless when guests are using it often, and obviously some guests are more careful than others about cleaning up after themselves. We are aware that the occasional partying can be a...

We stayed one night in the luxury tents and it was fantastic. The tent itself was equipped with a lovely double bed, electric blanket and enough plugs for phone charging. The bathrooms were clean and spacious and the highlight was the outdoor shower. The main house has a gorgeous, roaring fire place at the bar. It was really lovely to...

Thank you for the compliments! We are glad you enjoyed your time with us. Yes, the stars here on a clear night are definitely worth the trip from a city. Reminds you of your place in the universe.... And then to come inside and sit by the fire with a glass of something good - this is the life!

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Rocky Road Backpackers in The Crags, about 18 kms to the east of Plettenberg Bay, is on a secure rural small holding set adjacent to indigenous forest and surrounded by open green pastures with wonderful views of the Tsistsikamma Mountain foothills. Our tranquil, laidback base is the perfect place in which to relax and enjoy nature far from the rush of normal day to day living. The well maintained large gardens have many shaded ‘chill spots’ where one can unwind with a book or the company of others while the plunge pool is a great spot to take off the heat on those hot daysIt’s also a great spot from which to explore and experience the many attractions that the Plettenberg Bay region has to offer. We are close to the world’s highest Bungy, Monkeyland, Birds of Eden, The Elephant Sanctuary, The Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre and unspoilt Natures Valley. We’re well positioned for marine boat safari’s, game reserves and a vast network of scenic hiking trails covering forest, mountain and coastline.Rocky Road Backpackers is conveniently located a mere 2 kms from the N2 and is listed in the current editions of Coast to Coast, The Alternative Route and is also an accredited Baz Bus stop. Our accommodation is the standard mix of dorms, twins and doubles in the main farm house, bungalows and fully equipped luxury safari tents while those preferring to provide their own tents are free to do so.. Our entertainment areas come alive after working hours with an enclosed veranda/bar area with two fireplaces, the outside fireball for fireside chats and when the plunge pool is swung over to the hot tub on Friday nights. Rocky Road has a well established reputation for its quality farm style breakfasts and evening meals – roasts, casseroles, stews and, of course, the end-of-week braai’s. It goes without saying that the social happenings also add to the memories, which is why many people have returned to continue their experience of Rocky Road. ... more   less
