I have for quite some time been in search of a place within a short driving distance from Siliguri, a place far from the hustle and bustle of a hill town but one offering all the comforts of a star resort. I can safely say that Martam Retreat in East Sikkim has ticked all the boxes. A four hours drive from Bagdogra takes you to this sleepy hamlet of Upper Martam. The last 16 km stretch, once you turn off from NH 10 at Sangkhola, is a bumpy uphill ride but once you reach the doors of Martam Retreat and is welcomed by the lovely staff, you can be assured of a memorable stay. The retreat is built on a hillside overlooking endless rice terraces. The rooms are spacious, the food is delicious, the people are courteous. The Topden family which owns the retreat also has a century-old…
We stayed for two nights and the staff here couldn't do enough for us! The rooms are large and we had a lovely view of the paddy fields below. Food was tasty. One of the staff took us out for a walk of the paddy fields which was one of our highlights of our trip. The wifi was poor so the manager gave us a booster for our room - so very helpful. I really recommend this hotel as a place to stay when visiting Gangtok.
Wonderful - rooms are simple but well appointed spacious and clean. The food was plentiful and well presented, though some hot plates would help. Wifi is basic and spotty - but to the owners credit they were always around to help out with anything.
I stayed with the HF walking group from the UK. The owner and staff were very helpful and friendly. Lovey views across the paddy fields a welcomed peaceful stop on our tour. The rooms were all clean and well appointed. Plenty of hot water. There were a couple of power cuts but the rooms have an emergency light and their generator was quickly switched on, so no problems there. The pool looked lovely but unfortunately had just been emptied and closed for the winter, which is fair enough. Highly recommend a walk through the paddy fields with Deepak, we were lucky to be staying at harvest time so there was plenty to see and we were able to talk to the local farmers as they worked. I highly recommend this hotel.
Excellent hotel in a beautiful area. We enjoyed interesting village and forest walks, and walked to Rumtek monastery. Good food, staff and owner friendly and helpful, and swimming pool a refreshing bonus. Recommended.
