I cannot thank Kiran and his family enough for their hospitality and help during our unexpectedly brief stay with them recently. Just as we were getting ready to leave for a walking safari, my husband got a text that we needed to get home right away amid coronavirus being declared a pandemic. India, our only remaining option for returning back to the United States, had declared they would close the borders to foreigners not already in the country at midnight that night. As we determined that it was questionable whether or not we would be able to make the last flight to India from Kathmandu, Kiran showed his resourcefulness in finding us a driver to Delhi. He even offered to accompany us on the long journey if we felt uncomfortable with a driver who did not speak English. This would have made for a 16 hour plus journey for Kiran. Fortunately, we were able to schedule a flight from a closer airport in India to Delhi, and we decided to not inconvenience Kiran further by asking him to make the trip with us. He still felt compelled to accompany us to the border for which I am forever grateful. The border agents did not want to let us cross as they believed the border was already closed. After 2.5 hours at the border, they finally agreed to allow us to cross. Kiran was with us the whole time. He even called the driver several times for updates on our trip to the airport. Thank you so much for your care! I highly doubt we would have received the same kind of care had we opted for one of the larger resorts in the area. What I loved about Bardia Jungle Resort was that we were treated as honored guests of the family. On the same trip, we travelled to Sri Lanka where we stayed at regular hotels. Upon leaving the country we were both disappointed that we had not really developed any kind of connection to the country. This was not the case with our stay at Bardia. We were able to appreciate the people of Nepal, their worldview, struggles and beliefs. I will forevermore feel a connection with the people of Nepal! Bardia Jungle resort provides the essentials for any stay: comfortable beds, plentiful hot water and wonderful food! The tea (both the black tea with honey and the milk tea) were fantastic. The food was spicy and plentiful. Be careful as their servings are huge, and if you do happen to ask for more, they will give you twice as much as you asked. Typically, they do a vegetarian lunch and meat with dinner. If you are there during mango season, you could are in luck. Kiran has planted a number of mango trees in his large garden, which also has many vegetables and other fruits. Kiran works hard to give you good animal sightings. He will have you on safari from dawn until dusk if you like. He is excellent with birds as well! This is very different from the safari I had in Botswana as the animals are a bit more skittish in Nepal Bring a minimum 400mm lens to ensure that you get good pictures of the tigers. You will drive to different animal viewing locations where it is important that you remain quiet and fairly still; otherwise, the tigers will be aware of your presence and not show themselves. We did see a tiger, some rhinos and other birds/animals on the one day we were able to go on safari with Kiran. Kiran is also involved in protecting the animals from poaching and participates in something like a neighborhood watch program for the park. We were lucky to arrive on Holi, though Kiran says there is a much bigger celebration in October. The village kids were adorable and were excited to extend their celebration to me, painting my face as well. The village was fantastic in rural beauty and sweet people. It was so interesting to see their way of life. I know you will enjoy your stay at Bardia Jungle Resort!
