Call this gem located just a short 25-minute drive out of the main Boca town a B & B or a Boutique hotel, it makes no difference – They are the real deal and an absolute pleasure to spend a week or a weekend mini break as we did!
From the family dog who welcomes all visitors to Gary and Betsy who are the epitome of hospitality, our stay in the comfortable balcony room, to the bar and restaurant are all in sync creating the optimal guest experience!
Our eco ocean breeze cooled room was quiet and comfortable allowing us to fall asleep nightly to the sounds of the ocean. The balcony swing is the most comfortable seat in the house. However to keep couple harmony a 2nd swing would be a perk!
Our stay coincided with Saturday BBQ which was popular and we would enjoy a delicious Lobster meal after a happy hour with fellow guests around the bar!
Lucky us we did manage a swim in the Ocean hitting one of those rare days that it was deemed safe visually and by the Gary the resort meteorologist!
A massage by Maria is a defo – Her therapeutic skills performed on the 3rd floor balcony of the main house overlooking the ocean may just correct a decades long affliction or provide a relaxing massage as was the case with each of us having different requirements – Weeks later we are still enjoying the benefits!
Should our paths encounter a return to the island we are salivating at the thought of another visit to this delightful property. Thanks to all the staffs who made our stay extra special. Cheers – You all rock!

If you’re looking for a relaxing vacation, you enjoy listening to the crashing waves and you have an appreciation for nature’s beauty as well as animals the Hummingbird is just for you. Just 25 minutes outside of Bocas Town you will be greeted by the most welcoming hosts you could ask for - Betsy, Gary and Osa (sweet rescue dog). The hosts help with organizing excursions in Bocas del Toro or you can enjoy the amazing, off-the-grid property by hanging out at the pool, reading a book in the hammock under the gazebo or enjoying a relaxing massage. My wife and I stayed for four nights and can only highly recommend to stay at the Hummingbird when traveling to Bocas del Toro.

It took me a while to write this review, because I wanted to be thorough about my feedback. We stayed at The Hummingbird on Bluff Beach in Bocas del Toro for 5 days towards the end of October. Since we were there upwards of 4 days, transit from the airport to the boutique lodging was provided to us free of charge. The road coming in is rough, it is unpaved, and can be a bit bumpy. When we arrived, we found the lodging to be pleasant, peaceful, and immersed in nature. The room was clean, there was plenty of hot water, a fridge, and filtered drinking water provided daily. The gardens catered to the natural environment, welcoming many birds, butterflies, and insects onto the property.
Although we did not swim in it, the pool was lovely, very clean, and a good temperature. Since the rough surf on bluff beach makes it more ideal for sound bathing, walking, shelling, wildlife viewing, and stargazing in the evenings, the pool would be a welcome respite for those wishing to swim.
The owners, Betsy and Gary were very accommodating, but not smothering. They arranged activities and transit for us on several occasions. We also had our laundry done and the he price was reasonable. We dropped our basket off in the morning, and collected it in the restaurant with no issue in the afternoon.
The staff was phenomenal, as was their restaurant greeter, Osa who was always there with a cheerful demeanor. The restaurant itself featured a daily fixed breakfast menu with your stay, which we found quite tasty, and had quite a few delicious options for dinner. . The restaurant also housed many maps, tourism guides, and books on the various wildlife. We saw so many animals on site, including many species of hummingbirds, agouti, bats which roosted on the patio of our room, and montezuma oroprendole.
If you love nature, light pampering from very accommodating and knowledgeable hosts, peace with the exception of chirping hummingbirds and lapping waves, all in incredible isolated accommodations, this is the place for you.

Spent 5 nights here in December 2021. The hosts, a UK-US couple, are very kind. The room was basic but nice and clean. Really liked the comfortable bed. The delicious breakfast had some variety every day but it was also not a lot to eat. Cleanliness of the public toilets, tables and chairs must clearly be improved – and I am not only writing this because of Corona. The toilet lid in my own bathroom was loose the whole time. Bed linen was only exchanged once – you sweat a lot here. The garden and plants are beautiful but should be better maintained & taken care of.
There are a few things you should be aware here:
(a) It is absolutely not possible to swim at this beach. In fact, it is very dangerous due to the extremely strong currents. This is a pity and I was not aware as my travel agency did not inform me about this. Apparently there are really beautiful beaches for swimming on this island. (b) What I found outrageous was that for solo travelers still the full price for 2 guests is charged here – and it is not a cheap place, in fact it is quite expensive – there are places for 1/3 the price nearby. So I paid for 2 people but was alone here. Don’t understand this mentality. (c) The drive from/to the airport is already an adventure as the cars can at max. only drive 20km/h. Not a good road, at least they pretend (!) to care about the nature – but throw trash out even while I was in the car. Drivers were not nice/welcoming. Should be thankful that tourists are coming in these difficult times. (d) As the rooms are basically open and located close to the beach it was very difficult to sleep in the night because it does rain heavily and the huge waves are very noisy. This is nice during the day but it was an issue during the night.
The location is very remote, but this is what I liked a lot. A great place to relax, read a book and walk on the empty beach. But 5 days are also more than enough here. Hope my review helps.
Will write about the food (dinner) on the page for the restaurant.

We had high hopes for The Hummingbird before we arrived but in fact these were exceeded. A truly lovely place. Betsy and Gary achieve an environment that feels informal while being very well run. Our room with terrace overlooked the pretty pool and garden full of brightly coloured birds. A big comfortable bed and showers that were always hot. The food was excellent. It caters for vegetarians as much as for meat eaters. There was a safe and a small fridge. The information in the room - missing in other places we have stayed - was detailed and helpful.

Pictures don't do this space justice. This was my first stay at an ecolodge and it did not disappoint! t's so beautiful and relaxing. You can hear the the ocean and the jungle. They've created the perfect little oasis where you can indulge in butterflies, geckos, howler monkeys in the am, a flourishing ecosystem in the garden. Yet no mosquitos!!! Huge win! The rooms are open and the ceiling fans keep them surprisingly cool. The food was amazing! My bf and I had fresh snook for the first time! It was so great. Gary and Betsey are awesome! They sent a taxi to pick us up. It was our anniversary and they had chilled champagne waiting in our room upon our arrival. They were both so helpful. If there's something you need, Or you have any questions, ask! Betsey can likely make it happen. They had everything you could need. Lounge chairs, sunscreen, umbrellas, I was so bummed to learn they even had yoga mats at the end of our stay. We fell in love with Bocas our first day because of the Hummingbird. The hospitality, the locals who stopped in for some dinner or a cocktail. Such good energy, good people...I can't speak highly enough about how magical it is. Betsey even came knocking at our door one night, to tell us there was a turtle out front laying eggs in the sand on the road. Then they went out to make sure it went back onto the beach, so it could lay eggs safely. Such a great experience. We will definitely be back!

My wife and I found this to be the perfect getaway in Bocas. The owners deliver a first class experience in a very remote setting. We found them to be incredibly accommodating across all aspects of your stay. Examples include fresh double-filtered carafes of chilled water on demand, a cooler for tours, vetting tour vendors, and handling taxis and other bookings and more. Furthermore, the hummingbird is a newer, open air, tropical resort located in the jungle on a beautiful and secluded beach. The layout and format of the accomodations were impressive. Best of all, the restaurant was led by experienced culinary professionals and staffed with passionate locals who make great cocktails and deliver a menu that rivals that of top urban establishments, but at very reasonable prices, and in an incredible setting. We rarely stay at same place twice, but we plan to make an exception for this one.

I personally did not stay here but I spent so much time here the first week or two of our stay that I should have ! We had friends staying so every day after the beach we’d end up back at the pool, having the most delicious cocktails that spilled over into Dinner, which you can’t pass up. The food is amazing the atmosphere is insanely gorgeous and completely surrounded by hummingbirds ( if you didn’t guess by the name). But I really wanted to write this review because Betsy and Gary who own this perfect slice of paradise are just the coolest and kindest people you will meet ! They are so hospitable & they created something so beautiful, you can genuinely tell that they love what they do ! also they were always the first ones to point out all the amazing wildlife that flocks to their property! You guys rock & hopefully we will be back soon!

It was a treat to meet Gary and Betsy-they made our stay spectacular. Gary's garden was an amazing sight attracting many wonderful birds, frogs and butterflies. The care in his plant and shrubbery selections and their placement with the existing trees and foliage creates a magical and serene surrounding.
The dining and breakfasts are terrific. Dinner was outstanding and the portions were more than generous. The Brazilian barbeque on Saturday night is not to be missed.
The rooms are modern, spacious and tastefully designed. You can hear the ocean and birds while enjoying temperate breezes from the ocean in front and tropical forest behind. Everything looks brand new.
The property is quiet and safe near the end of the road, about 20 minutes north of Bocas via a $15 taxi.

We stayed here for 5 nights on our 10 night visit to Panama. It is about 25 minutes drive from the airport, the last 15 minutes was very bumpy but beautiful scenery. Greeted on arrival by Gary and Betsy who were wonderful hosts during our stay. The bungalows are very comfortable and an enormous amount of attention to detail has gone into the design. They are located in stunning gardens, which have again been planned to maximise the wildlife. There is a fantastic long beach on your doorstep, with huge waves which attract the surfers, and we enjoyed walking along and watching them in action. It also has a lovely pool with areas in the sun and shade, perfect for relaxing. There is lots of lovely walks directly outside, both through jungle and to secluded beach coves. The breakfast is excellent. We ate at the hotel a couple of nights and also other restaurants nearby, all serving wonderful food. We would highly recommend anyone to stay at The Hummingbird.
